UTV not hooked up for years.. accessing recordings?

I went through many of the posts and couldn't really find what I was looking for.

I disconnected my UTV many years ago.. at least 2 years ago. I did disconnect SAT and phone line prior.

I thought it would be cool to copy one specific program I know is on there, so I plugged it in with a video output to the TV.

I can't seem to get beyond the Webtv dialing process, which ends up not being able to connect. I didn't want to hook up a phone line just yet.

I tried many of the various reset codes.

Do I have to call and re-activate the receiver?

thank you

You sure the Hard Drive is still installed?

Sounds like it isn't seeing the Hard Drive.

Maybe pull that Access Card and see if the Hard Drive connections are still OK.

I'm positive the hard drive is still installed. The box has never been hacked either.

I'll pull the access card and try to start it up and see what happens.

thanks

Stiction? Can you hear the drive spin up when plugged in? I agree with Dave, sounds like drive troubles

I was suggesting pulling the Access Card because if you want to check the Hard Drive Connections you'll want to open the case. Not pulling the Access Card (before opening the Case) can cause some unwanted/unneeded damage which isn't fun to fix. (I did it, and it took me a lot of time to rebend all the contacts back. The Card Reader still likes to pop up, but it does work.)

You will need the Access Card in the UTV to get those programs... So it's unlikely not having it in will do anything for you. But, it doesn't hurt to try I guess. There are some "reboot" procedures from back in the day... That recommended disconnecting all the cables and Access Card and doing a cold reboot... to resolve "blinking light" and "dead" UTVs... It might do something.

Keep us posted.

Hard drives that have been turned off for very long tend to freeze up. If it isn't spinning up, then tapping it lightly with a hammer could unfreeze it, and there's little to lose.

Since it's inside a Hard Drive Housing... that light tapping with a hammer should be fine. I'd give a gentle tapping on the screw mounts. That might get things shaking.

On first reading I was a bit scared for your UTV. :)

Good Luck,

Based on your original post. You don't need to call/reactive your UTV with DTV just yet.

But it would seem that you will need to download/update the UTV OS.

It seems that your MY SHOWS and original setup is probably lost. So you can try and download a copy of the UTV OS and see if that Remains after it downloads and reboots.

If it doesn't you'll probably need to upgrade the hard drive and update the UTV OS again. If it stays THEN you'll need to reactive UTV service to record new programs.

But since it seems you just wanted to copy a program off the UTV... It would seem unlikely you'll want to upgrade/reactivate service on this UTV IF the program is lost.

I 2nd the notion that the HD is unhappy. I would guess that the UTV tier has expired after 2 years' time, and that you'd have trouble accessing the recording without re-activating the UTV with DTV. If you get the HD to boot the OS, and the OS is at 3.5, then you could possibly get to the show. But you'd have to ask a different forum, cause that would arguably involve "hacking," which is prohibited on this site.

GL!!

Wow... what respect you have for this forum Recursion! (19)
Others, who I will not mention :p , would enjoy causing trouble. (19)

IMHO since M$ and DTV have abandoned UTV, then why not hack it. Who is it hurting now?

Flame away.
