37" LCD for Gaming

I don't know what the price is now, because I got a major discount on it, but I have the Westinghouse LVM-37W3, which is a 37" 1080p monitor. Back when I got it, it was pretty cheap, but then I have no idea how expensive those two you showed were.

I am using the ACER AT3705 but at 1920x1080p @50hz via DVI from a pair of 7900GTX SLI'd and get 1:1. It will not do 1080p @60hz if thats a concern. For me VGA and HDMI didnt look as good as DVI. I didnt get 1:1 to look good except with DVI.

I use it as my gaming rig display and I play a lot of FPS. I am not sensitive to motion blur so I dont notice any. Each person see's bur and ghosting depending on how sensitive they are to those artifacts. It seems that I am not since I use a lot of LCD TV's as monitors in my various systems.

You should really check out the Westinghouse 37w3. 1920x1080 will prove to be a much more enjoyable resolution for gaming. It fits all your requirements, no extra tuner, 6ms, etc., and I was able to get mine at a solid $grand.

westinghouse doesn't offer tv's worldwide. I'm not sure about Australia, but I know the UK doesn't get them.

For what its worth, I use a Westinghouse 37W1 at 1080p via DVI, but I do see some ghosting on dark colors on dark colors, but its not distracting and its not "every color all the time".

I paid less than $1k for mine. Good Luck trying to find a high-pixel-response LCD TV, they dont normally put out accurate stats on their pixel response times.

FWIW, I spent a few weeks with the ACER AT3705 as replacement for my secondary HT (the mini one), I did not see any ghosting, but my main complaints are that :

1. Even though actual viewing angle is wide, optimal viewing angle is very narrow. If you stand in exact center, you get the clearest image, but move to left and right by 5 degrees and you see there is the faint white sheen that is inherent in LCDs become even more pronounced. This is best seen when you have two identical sets playing similar materials (someone pointed this out to me). I knew this before I bought it.
2. This model is about average for LCDs in showing black areas, even from the optimal exact center, you see that there is no true black in there. (Haven't seen an LCD that can show true true black though).

However, the price can't be beat, and hooked up to a PC 1920x1080@60Hz, the performance is stellar. If you are looking for a 1080P LCD, this is probably the best bargain you can get, even if it is not the bleeding edge quality.

Right now it is being driven by the 360 and PS2 and a samsung BDP1000 with a HTPC and simple DVD player, this will be the game room TV for a couple of years for the kids to play with so that they can leave my HT gear alone. I don't know where the PS3 will go. Probably the main HT as a movie player.

Main advantage : it has tons of video inputs (4 sets of SD inputs and 3 sets of component + DVI + HDMI +VGA) Useful if you are not driving it from an AV receiver (which I am), but you can avoid the component video switching if you have lots of component video gear by using what is in this display.

I think it also has an ATSC tuner, though I have yet to play with it.

Crutchfield lists the response time for the LVM-37w3 at 8ms. Do they have it wrong?

I would like to chip in and say that the type of games you play is probably a big factor in deciding what resolution you need. If you play a lot of FPS games 720p is generally fine because you can crank up the AntiAliasing and still get a very pretty picture, the higher the res the nicer it will look but it won't really affect your gameplay.

How ever if you play a lot of strategy games or MMO's were additional screen real estate is a HUGE boon then I would strongly recommend you go with a 1080p display

Well after switching to a 8800GTX the ACER doent seem to work with it. I just order the Dell 3007 monitor. The ACER was alway very finicky and getting it to accept 1080p was always a challenge. Could only ever get 50hz, but for some reason the 8800GTX will not create 50hz and I had to run the ACER at 30hz, but this caused a lot of artifacts and drop syncs which made it unusable. Sad the ACER has a nice pic, when it was working over DVI. HDMI really suck, seems its being converted to anolog and was worst then the component, VGA for some reason would not support 1080p. A lot of overscan. So after a week of trying to get it to work with the 8800GTX, I going to reccycle it to be used for a TV, and use the Dell for gaming.

with the 8800 is that just a driver/software issue, or a hardware incompatibility?

Dont know. The ACER worked with the SLI 7900GTX's but not at 60hz. No idea if its 8800GTX hardware or drivers. Funny is that the ACER worked with the 8800GTX for about two weeks at 30hz and then started to artifact and I could not fix it. Just got fed up having to spend a few hours having to reconfig the ACER everytime I switch some video stuff. With the Dell, almost PnP. The only probm with my Dell is the brightness hard buttons on the monitor dont seem to work consistantly. They are SW driven. Some times I can use the the buttons to increase the brightness but then I can not use them to decrease. And sometimes it works with the SW and sometimes it doesnt. Also with the 2560x1600 rez the text is real small. Also with FPS games like BF2 at that rez looks great but the mouse is very twitchy with all that screen space...not the greatesr thing for a camper like me. Also at that rez, my frames in BF2 dropped from the locked 100 to about 50.

wow..... i cant even imagine what gaming at that rez would look like, im confined to my dell 17" lcd for now..... it sucks.
i thought that the westy 37" was loads better than the acer..... and loads cheaper, atleast thats what i got from reviews and different forums and such.
So why are people still goin for the acer, its harder to get, not as good (i think), no dvi......
is it because the built in tuner or am i missing something critical here?
