i have a jl 12w7 in a jl pre-fab ported box. i will be using it in my house for probably somewhere close to a year and need something to drive it. a clean 1000 watts rms would be nice. and band-pass is a plus although not a necessity. is a plate amp my best bet? sound quality is important to me, and i was surprised to see dayton plate amps from parts express in the sub-400 dollar range. are they quality, or should i look elsewhere? all suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know about Dayton amps, but I thought they mostly made plate amps for subs (class G?) that don't necessarily work well for full-range speakers. But if what you have is a sub (and it sounds like it is), then by all means go for it.

jl 12w7 is a beefy sub (though it's generally intended for car use)

I wouldn't recommend the Dayton plate amp for the 12w7. It looks like the 1000 watt amp is max watts not RMS. Also the specs sheets say the amp is not recommended for impedances below 4 ohms and may void the warranty.

If you have the bucks check out the PLX2502. the 2502 can put out 1000w at 3 ohms, comes with high and low pass filters. It can run a pair of the 12w7s in stereo mode. You can save $100 with the 1802 but only put out 700-750w. I don't think you would want to run either one of them in bridged mode because the w7's impedance is too low.

yea it is a car sub. and its also a 3 ohm svc, which worries me a little with these amps.

i have it narrowed down to the dayton 1000w

the bash is the only one with a subsonic filter, but it only 500 watts, compared to the other 1000s. do you think i could get away without a subsonic filter even though its in a ported box? also how will these amps react to a 3 ohm load? any other amps i should have a look at? thanks

that sounds perfect. who makes it or do you have a link? ive never heard of it before. what do you think about the subsonic filter? must-have?

Why would you want to run a 3 ohm load on these amps they are only rated to 4 ohm? You can try it but if you blow them up they aren't going to be covered by their warranty.

Unless you are runing a turntable I don't think those big w7s aren't going to need a subsonic filter. The qsc has one built in but its set too high to be of much use.

well ideally i wouldnt, but those were the only options that i knew of. thats why i made this thread. :)

those look great but i feel like i would be wasting money by paying for the extra channel of power that wouldnt be used. are there any mono amps similar to those? maybe a different manufacturer?

It will be very hard to find an amp other than a car amp for this sub..

The qsc amps are for pro/touring use which is why they are impedence matched for their use..

Why not buy an JL 1000/1 amp that is Matched exactly to that sub.. Then find a good VAC to VDC converter to convert your wall 115vac to 12DC.. Although, I have no idea if this will really work because house power is different than an capacitor, alternator and yellowtop.. This is only an idea and maybe some other dudes can chime in on whether it is do able or not..

this sounds good because i already have a 1000/1 that wont be in use. i will try and find a converter that says it can handle this kind of power.

what about the DF 1736

it has selectable voltage, so i can set it to 14 volts, as well as selectable amperes output (0-6), but i dont know what to set that at for the 1000/1, and couldnt find it in the JL owners manual. does anyone know if this will work?

Dayton does make a 1000w (into 4ohms) rack mountable subwoofer amp, if you were looking for one.

Well there is me and at least 4 or 5 other guys using it with their DIY subs with zero issues, and we are all happy with the performance/value.
