I have spent an inordinate amount of time researching for TV since last
Xmas. Looked online, magazines, friends, wherever or whatever for info.
And finally to my wife's relief, I was all set on the Panasonic TH-50PX60U. Just waiting till Thanksgiving and then ready to pull the plug. The Entertainment Center was configured, the wiring was done. The first movie to be seen was decided (Sin City).

Then the other day I was in Sears to buy some clothes for my little one and
I had to pass the electronics section and I just stopped in my tracks. I could not
believe what I was seeing. I saw the Toshiba 42HL196 right next to the Panny,
and I must say my panny was looking distant second in picture quality compared
to the Tosh. I immediately called my wife and she refused to do any more comparisons. Poor soul has had it.

I have since looked at the Tosh at many places and I feel that it offers better picture quality. But again and again I am reminded of the voice in my head - Never Trust the Stores for True Picture.

Is my opinion correct or the Tosh is just looking better in the stores and will
not once I get it home? How do you guys rate Tosh? Any issues with Tosh?
Also I notice more clay faces on Panny compared to Tosh. Is this 'cause of bad settings or does LCD/1080 offer advantage ?

After extensive comparison between the Samsung HP-S4253 and the Panny 42" I can say without a doubt that the Panny has the best picture among the two and better than the Hitachi, LG, Philips as well. You really can't compare the Panny until you change the mode from Vivid to Standard. I really wish the bezel wasn't so ugly (silver) on the Panny, especially since whichever I buy is going above a fireplace.

The key to keeping the wife happy is to make sure you balance it out. If you're going to spend x-amount of money on your toys, then give her money to spend on something she wants. If she is cool enough to spend time helping you compare sets and be involved with something she's probably not nearly as excited about as you are, then go out of your way to take an interest in something SHE likes to show her how much you appreciate it.

Panny's default configuration is notoriously bad; when you take it out of Vivid mode the clay face will go away, and with the right settings it will give you the best picture quality overall. Also in a dark room an LCD's black's will look pathetic.

Stick with the Panny and save your wife further torment.

You should show an extreme interest in selecting her lingeries when she goes out to buy them, and help her decide in the fitting rooms

Seriously,

You can't go wrong with a Panny. Forget how it looks in the stores, once you caliberate it at home, it is beyond par excellence.

Poor guy. His wife probably beat him. Anyways I went to Sears once and they didn't even bother to change the settings out of the box. It was horrible and if I went buy what I saw at Sears I wouldn't have gotten the Panny either.

FWIW, I would agree to the keep your plan on track.

The first time I saw the current gen panys in BB they looked terrible. It's the torch mode. Spend some time with the settings and you should be happy.

OP you sound serious about this as if video may become your hobby and your wife has been at least up to now very supportive.

This is great. I think, therefore, to express your love and appreciation you now should reciprocate and likewise support hobbies for her. For best harmony, may I wholeheartedly suggest she take up either external processors or preferably calibration as her first hobby? You might consider surprising her with a spectrodometer and associated software for her next birthday. I am sure the ISF would have suggestions for gifts for Valentines too.

P.S. She will love tinkering with the Panasonic as it will reward her with a great picture. If you can swing it though go all the way for her sake and get a NEC as it will have all the adjustments she will no doubt want for fine picture calibration.

The best solution to your problem would be to buy a nice, big 65 inch Panasonic plasma and then have your entire family sit in front of it and watch movies together so that you can all bond with each other. Choose films which present the characters with several dilemmas so that you can all discuss which choice you each think is best.

(You might start with "Ordinary People" or "The Slums of Beverly Hills.")

I was in Sears a few weeks back looking for a price quote on a Panny, and spent about 30 minutes waiting for the sales-dude. He was attempting to explain HD to some very perplexed seniors. Anyway, I'm bored so I check the DVD->TV connections at the back of the display models. Not HDMI, Not component, Not S-video... just plain vanilla composite cables.

It makes it sooo difficult to make any valid PQ comparisons. I have no idea why Joe/Josephine Sixpack would ever buy a flat panel. The way they are typically on display makes them look like they're "Not Scottish".

A few years back when Plasmas were selling for $10,000, Best Buy had a child trade-in deal. One 42" panel per child traded in. Perhaps that would have been the time to deal with the stepchild.

Otherwise...call Dr. Phil.

I'll add NEC to the list based solely on the impressions of other AVSF participants. I have never seen a real live Fujitsu or NEC PDP... so I take it on faith these displays deserve the accolades they receive.
