SONY LCD TV XBR2 vs XBR3 Any differences?

Dear All,

I am in the market for a 40" LCD TV and have narrowed it down to the Sony XBR models. I am SO very confused. I have read that the only difference between the XBR2 and the newer XBR3 is that the 3 has a black polished framing and a two year warranty vs. a silver/interchangable one and a 12 month warranty. Supposedely the pictures are to be exactly the same.

THEN, I went to a Tweeter's in the local area and to a Best Buy. Both 'specialists' in the area said that the XBR3 also has a better contrast ratio and better picture.

Is that really true? Even some catalogs I'm reading say they have the exact same display. I am confused.

Anybody with a definitive answer?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

The XBR3 and XBR2 (current models) are the exact same television.

The XBR3 has a piano black finish, a black remote, and a 18 month (not 24 month) warranty. The XBR2 has a standard silver bezel that is interchangable, a standard silver remote, and has a 12 month warranty.

The only "improved contrast" could be the fact that the bezel is indeed black, which often tricks the eye into believe the image is more "contrasty" than it truely is.

It's all cosmetics.

Last weekend I purchased the KDL-40XBR2 and had some of the same experiences you mention. Went to BB and another retail store where the sales associates made a hard sell for the XBR3 due to it's more advanced features. When I pinned them down by asking to produce some sort of written marketing or other documentation to corroborate their assertions... they both failed to do so.

Frustrated I went to a Sony Style store and had wonderful service (which should be mandatory when shopping for a $3000+ TV...). The Sony sales associate was very informative and was very honest about the $300 aesthetic-only differences between the Bravia XBR2 and XBR3. They were running a promotion for a $300 gift card, and with a 5-year warranty being under $300 I ended up getting the XBR2 for cheaper and with a longer warranty than the XBR3!

Good luck with your purchase, and remember that if you feel like you're getting jerked around by a sales associate... you probably are

Thanks everybody for your replies. I will probably end up with the XBR2 with the next price drop. Any prediction on when the next latest and greatest will come out to push the prices down?

Well you guys should know that the XBR3 is hand built and has a few other features that make it better. And I know best buy wasn't lying because they sold it to me for $200 less than the XBR2 because I found it for 2799
