I know this is an amazing piece and all, I'm more concerned about how easily it's upgraded. I'm rather new to the audio domain, I've mainly stuck to video for a while. Now I'm looking to replace my crappy Logitech X-530's (yes, I did the idiotic thing and bought a PC system for a game console, namely the Xbox 360), and this came to mind first. I've heard the HT-S580 in person and I know the models are essentially identical, save for component video switching and colors (I think they're slightly different...)

So I'd like to know just how easy this thing is to upgrade. Like I said, I'm not so hot on the audio end of things. I'm not looking to upgrade right away (I'm no fool, I'd get some good speakers and a nice reciever instead if I wanted to upgrade ASAP), but down the line I know I'll want to swap out the speakers and/or subwoofer.

I have HT-S-590, and as i see it it won't be much of a problem to upgrade it(will have to use speaker level connection for the sub though). I, myself currently looking for a speaker +sub package to upgrade it. People on this forum have upgraded HT-580 and it works perfectly for them.

Wait...so I'd need speaker wire to connect a replacement sub... how would that work?

Like I said, I'm pretty new to the audio domain. Speakers, as I know, are plug-and-play...they work or they don't (yes, I know cables effect quality and such, my point is there's one generic type of cable, so it's simple to figure out).

Set subwoofer setting on your receiver as "no", connect your front speakers wires from the receiver to the rear panel of the subwoofer, usually you will have 2 sets of spring loaded connectors for in and out. It is called high level connection. So connect your fronts from the receiver to the sub into the "in" port and then connect your front speakers to the "out" port on the sub. Set your fronts as "large" in the receivers's menu. The trick is that your sub will handle the lows and the rest will be sent to the speakers and the system will not suffer any losses in sound. People used to connect receivers this way before receivers with LFE output hit the market. LFE means dedicated unamplified channel of low frequencies which is fed from the receiver to the powered sub.

It'll make more sense when I buy it. Thanks for the info, and I'm sure I can figure it out when I have something to work with.

Don't buy this.

You'll get a buzz from the speakers if you use anything but the provided speaker wire.

TransAm's not read enough. Yes, some of the 590s had a problem with using heavier speaker wire. However, Onkyo's remanufactured units do not suffer from this problem and I understand that Onkyo has worked this out in recent production runs.

Note - this is an excellent product. Unlike the HTiB I have, the receiver in this box stands alone as a very good receiver and will serve as a nice center piece when you upgrade those Onkyo speakers.

I've got the 580, previous model, same system and I've upgraded both speakers and sub.

To connect a powered sub you'll keep the same settings on the receiver, don't change the subwoofer to "no" keep it at "yes". This receiver does have a dedicated subwoofer ouput it's just via speaker wire is the difference.

Using speaker wire connect it to the subwoofer output speaker terminals on the recever and the other end to the right or left high level inputs of the sub making sure you run - to - and + to +. Doesn't matter which one, right or left will work. That's all there is to it.

Wait a minute. The signal qoing out of the receiver for the sub is amplified. Is it not? What is going to happen when you connect an amplified channel to the powered sub? Of course if you have a sub that converts the signal from high to low level, this might work. But not all subs are built like this.

What I said is not untrue.

You're basically doing a crap shoot if you buy one. "Some" don't have problems? Well "some" do and it's enough to steer away from it.
