On a whim, i took the Dell Precision M6500 running Ubuntu that I use for work, attached a display port to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable and it did true plug and play and worked instantly.
Here's what linux reports as the timings:
I've tried to derive what I think the porch values might be from that range, but i haven't succeeded in getting it to work.(--) Jul 11 21:52:54 NVIDIA(0): --- EDID for SHARP HDMI (DFP-1) ---

What's even more infuriating is that i tried maybe a dozen or so different resolution choices in linux and the TV supported them all.
Am i missing something completely fundamental here?
