fan noise, defect?

I can quite clearly hear the fan running in my new xbox 360, even when it's seemingly doing nothing at all (just sitting in the dashboard). Is mine defective, or is this normal? Then there's also the power supply fan, although that is a good deal quieter.

The noise makes this console useless for watching hd-dvd or listening to music, in my opinion.

the fan on mine isn't too bad, but dvd player sounds like a fridge.

Mine was nearly silent when in dashboard mode.

You shouldnt be getting noticable noise when on the dashboard. If the fans are running it may be faulty or requires additional ventilation. Where is the xbox located? Mine is almost silent as well when on the dash or playing HD-DVD's.

why is the dvd drive so damn loud??? whats the speed of it?? 16X?

My 360 is audible while it's not playing a game or movie, but it's loud when playing a game or movie (unless it's an HD-DVD movie - that drive is quiet).

Then again, I do have mine in a open A/V stand, with glass above and below it which doesn't help with the acoustics. If the volume really bothered me, I'd just move it to a space better suited to dampen the acoustics. If I had the space, I'd have a dedicated A/V closest where all of my A/V equipment could whir and hum to their hearts content - without bothering me.

In relation, my Moxi is the same volume as our 360. I'm so used to the ambient sound from the Moxi that the 360 doesn't bother me.

So far my one gripe is the dvd drive noise is way too loud. It sounds like a 52x CD drive! I have to turn the volume up so much just so I don't have to listen to the thing. I really wish they could use a quite dvd drive. My regular dvd player doesn't sound like that. Why is it that the 360 has to sound like that?

My fan does make noise when I first turn it on and then it returns to normal......System is running fine, so no big deal......It might go out at sometime, but I have a warranty, so I don't worry about it.....

I sent in my xbox 360 a week and a half ago and just got it back 11/16. It was very noisy (like nascar noisy) before the ring of death. But now my 360 is quite like a benz and cool as the ac in one. I don't know what the did but it gets no better than this!

Ventilation shouldn't be my problem, the 360 is sitting on an open shelf and no other components are within a foot or so. I can't get a feeling for whether this idle noise is typical or not. Plenty of complaints about the xbox noise are to be found, but others say it's quiet. So I don't know what to do. Talismoon sells a replacement fan that is supposed to be 3db quieter, but I don't think that's going to be enough. I may just return this console and wait to see if the 65nm processor allows for a quieter machine.

My 360 is, like the others, noticably loud when the DVD drive is spinning. When the DVD drive isn't spinning so fast (like on some original Xbox games, or on the dash board) the fan is audible, but not super loud. Sounds like I'd expect a small fan to sound. So, don't expect complete silence when the unit is idle.

I have the original xbox 360 from the initial launch.

I noticed my power supply makes noises. It sounds like a grinding/zapping sound 24/7. While it's subtle from across the room, it's slightly disturbing up close. Is this normal? Should I call Xbox support for warranty replacment? (how long is the warrenty anyway) if it's expired, can someone post the link to buy a new quieter power supply?

I too would love to use a 360 as a V2 Media Center extender. The noise and heat is too much for a bedroom though. I'm waiting for the new Linksys V2 Extender that supports XviD too.

I have the Samsung drive, the only time it seriously generates noise is when playing a game, because the drive runs @ 12x.

Whilst watching a DVD in the drive it runs @ either 1x or 2x I can't recall now and is silent, the movie over powers the noise.

Dashboard I forget that it's running. However there are different X360 DVD drives... The samsung being the best for noise.

How's the HD-DVD add-on (itself) for noise?

Most of them are like that...people will tell you you just need to pump up the volume on your receiver.

would just like to note this I have my xbox 360 in a refrigerated box running at 38 deg F and the fans never stop and also the air comming out of the 360 is still at 70 deg F

the 360 is just hot thats it and along with cost savings that is why M$ is going to the 65nm CPU's

Is there a quick way to tell what kind of drive you have in your 360?

My original 360 fan was quite silent, like a PC with low-flow fans...you knew it was on, but the sound was unobtrusive. That died.

The replacement they sent me has a noticbly louder fan.....I'm assuming thats part of the fix for these things, get more airflow over the board When its on, you know its on...not distracting, but you know its on.

Once I'm in a game, I never notice its sound, and I dont game very loud with the kids sleeping.

However, its drive is the loudest I've ever heard Seriously, its stupidly loud...52x CD drive is right......not much to do there except turn up the volume or move the 360 further away.

Look at the tray. 2 holes in it one in the front and one a little to the right its the old one. Old one = loud. I got a new drive and its quiet. But I have had both.
