Quick ?. I've got a Panny PT-500u projector with a DVI connection and was wondering if I can hook up a PS3 through it(PS3 having HDMI)? I've heard they're the same except HDMI carries audio).

I don't know what I'm doing and need help.
I have the ethernet cable, I use a RCN cable modemn that has only one ethernet connection spot.
I need help from there.(I rented Warhawk and I didn't know you can't even play it without a network acct.)

What you need is a router to share that one internet connection with multiple clients (laptops, pcs, ps3, etc). I would recommend picking up something solid like the Linksys wrt54g or the like and then you can setup a wireless connection between the ps3 and the linksys or use a wired link if dragging the cable from the router to the ps3 isn't a big deal.

Yes, you can get a HDMI to DVI cable that will allow you to do this. Monoprice has a few you can buy.

As for the audio, the DVI side of it will not be connected to receive. So you will need some other method for getting audio (toslink or maybe use hdmi to an AVR first).

the PS3 can not decode and pass that on board. Only some BRs and HDDVD players can do that. Its still the same.

Quick way to play is plug your modem into PS3. Go into network settings PS3. Run auto set up. Then go to playstation network store. Try to buy something it will then tell you you need an account. Follow directions. You really need a router though. You will want to have ps3 wired for online games better connection. Wireless is not as good. You can get a wireless router with extra Ethernet ports. I have my modem, wired router and my wireless bridge router all in my entertainment center. My mac in another room is connected to the wireless bridge its an apple airport express. Its also connected to my 805 so I can stream music from iTunes to my avr over optical. It also works with a pc. Get a router.

I have an 805 too. So the simple answer is to make sure the the PS3 is set to PCM and not Bitstream then right and you will see Multichannel on the amp? I'm used to my A35 where you set Bitstream.

I bought The latest Die Hard and was very disappointed with the sound last night then I realized I was listening to the DTS core which I guess is unavoidable with the PS3? With correct software support (an update?) this could be avoided? I'm assuming I can still properly hear any Blu Ray with PCM or TrueHD at least though as long as I properly set the PS3 to PCM?

Set your ps3 for PCM, bitstream won't help you.

As for the DTS-HD-MA update, you'll see a lot of people clamoring for it, but it isn't here yet. There is a chance, but who knows when it might arrive.

My 60GB has taken a dirt nap. Will not read blu-ray, cds, PS3 games, nothing, nada, zip. Discs won't even spin when inserted. Called sony on Sun. went through all the troubleshooting steps. Nothing worked. Told me the blu-ray drive is dead. I am still under 1 year warranty, they're shipping me a box to have it replaced this week. Hopefully will have a quick turn around time. Anyone here have their system replaced? About how long did it take?

I had to do that too; they said it would take two weeks AFTER they saw the broken one....I was very PO'd that they were going to take so long. They wouldn't agree to ship the replacement before they received my bad unit, even though I was willing to pay to guarantee it. And the time you don't have a PS3 is counting against your warranty period too!

Anyway, the box took about a week to get here, but it came with prepaid overnight UPS back to Sony, and they shipped the same day they got mine so it was back to me in 3 days. At least that part went faster than I'd expected. And the replacement is working so far too. One thing; somebody HAS to be home to sign for it, so keep an eye on the tracking #. Good luck.

I can get games in 5.1 (via optical cable) but not BR movies? I've tried PCM and Bitstream, what option am I missing? I've set my optical sound settings to include 5.1, DTS, AAC, etc...?

Or, does the sampler disk with the PS3 not have 5.1+ encoded audio? I have to get a "real" BR movie yet to test it.
I just bought my Ps3 last Friday, and I couldn’t get my wireless to connect. It showed the signal strength at 100% (my routers 5 feet away). It however would not connect, finally using some things from my current CCNA 1 class, I manually filled in the IP, subnet, ect ect. Works fine now, for some reason I guess it just couldn’t obtain an address automatically from the router.
Other then that it’s been running good, I get 5.1 through my component and 1080i.

Don't know about any "sampler disc," but I do know that movie trailers from the PSN Store are only 2-channel. Try an actual BR movie.

Thanks, will try today, picked one up -- just gotta get home to try it. The sampler disk is the PS3 network disk that is packaged with it and it has BR trailers on it (300, Bond, etc...). I just find it odd that they would have a montage on the sample trailer that says "amazing sound" or something similar and not encode it digital 5.1 or higher... but hopefully thats all it is, will let everyone know for sure once I try the new BR disk. On a side note I tried a normal dvd in it last night and it was in 5.1 so, I am think the the sampler is not encoded.

Thanks

Yeah, I'm guessing they're using the same trailers as those on PSN. They're all in 2-channel (saves considerable space). But I didn't know Sony was packaging a movie trailer disc these days. Cool!

Yep, tried a real BR disc and all good. Odd that Sony wouldn't encode a decent audio track on the trailers everyone can see with their PS3... Oh well at least it was something stupid and nothing wrong with my setup.

Can I play a DVD image on a USB flash drive? If so what folder structure does it want? I can't find any way that lets the PS3 recognize it as a DVD.

I had a strange issue pop up last night that I'm hoping you guys can help me with. I registered my PSP with my PS3, and then proceeded to mess around a little bit with remote play and such. Nothing unusual. A little while after I got done, I turned on my PS3 to watch a movie, and my remote control would not respond (though it did turn on the unit). I thought the batteries might be dead, so I tried my Sixaxis controller, and it would not connect with the PS3 (the four lights just kept flashing and flashing). So I turned the PS3 off, then on again, and everything seemed fine. Has anyone else had any Bluetooth issues like this, and could they in anyway be related to the remote play experimenting I was doing earlier (the only thing out of the ordinary from the PS3s normal use for me)? Thanks for any input.

I have a problem watching blu ray movies on my plasma. I have a samsung hp-t5054 720p. The ps3 is set at 1080i. The problem I have is that when watching a blu ray movie the background flickers. Like the color tones change. I have tested on regular dvds and this does not happen. Also this does not happen on my regular dvd player so the source must be the PS3. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the following settings on:

RGB-limited
RGB-YCrCb
Super white -On

Hi All.
Our new PS3 broke after 3 weeks. We watched a SD dvd last night with no problems. This evening we decided to watch a BR dvd and get no picture. SD dvd play fine, we get audio but no picture. Of course this is a refurb unit from Sony and is really ,really noisy. I have the PS3 running through an HK avr247. I tried changing the resolutions on the PS3. We have a Directv HD receiver going through the same receiver with no problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Zaxdad

Ok, so my PS3 seems to be having slight problems or at least to me it seems that way. I have had lockups on my PS3 since early on when I got the system (launch 60gig). They are usually spread out over time and not everytime I load up a game. Concerned me a little but everything always worked afterward. I could always restart the unit from the front button and sometimes from the controller after a freeze. Many times I could still hear the music or game volume still playing with a frozen screen.

So last night I go to play Uncharted again for a second go through. I pop in the disc and it starts up. One of the first cut screens begins to play but the audio sync is off by about 1 second. The cut scene also "skips" once or twice. Scene ends and I start to play the game. No problems but worries me. So I start again. This time audio sync is fine and cut scene skips I think once. Start playing game and in about 5 minutes game freezes. Still sound going and I turn it off from controller. Restart Uncharted and cut scene plays fine and I continue to play game for 1 1/2 hours with no problems.

This morning I test it again with Uncharted by going to some different chapters. I had one cut scene skip but about 3 others played fine. Game froze once after only about ten minutes of testing. Shut off from front button and upon restart loaded new cut scene that played fine and game played fine for about 20 minutes then I stopped playing.

Put in COD 4 to test out another game and picked the chapter that has all the credits in the beginning and person being put into vehicle. That froze up on my about 2 minutes in. Shut off from front button and replayed scene and played all the way through and fine for next 30 minutes. Quit to go to work.

Like I said, I have had games freeze before kinda randomly. Though some games (Rockband & Nhl 08) have never froze. My PS3 is completely out in the open. I have read a lot about blu ray drives failing, and I hope this is not the case. I will try some more testing later. Anyone have any thoughts? Think that something is possibly corrupt on hard drive? Should I do a reformat?

Thanks!!

My take is you have a bad unit. It was never "right" and now it's getting worse. Mine started freezing right out of the box and everyone here (and Sony support) said to sent it back. Most NEVER freeze. My replacement unit hasn't locked up (yet). The lasers that have gone bad, fom what I've read here, don't lock up the system, they just quit reading discs.

Well, I'm out of warranty (Dec. 06 unit). I don't know though, it's weird. I can go months without problems with plenty of play then I'll get a couple of lockups in a row. Most of the times with the lockups they will happen early when I start to play the game. Then after a shut down from front button and restart I could play for hours with no issues what so ever. Sometimes after a shut down I will turn off the back switch for 10-20 minutes and then power back up. Don't know if this really does anything but it makes me feel like it has. LOL

These are some of the reason why I think maybe a reformat could resolve issues? Something getting messed up with hard drive.

I don't do much gaming, my problems were all with BD and DVD discs. But I noticed that if I made sure the disc was spotless, it didn't freeze up so often. Washing with soap and water would sometimes make it work long enough to watch a movie. Not always. Maybe you have smudged discs or a dirty optical lens? Even my replacement seems to be particular about this.
Yeah never had a problem with BR or DVD. Actually after this happened last night I watched Count of Monte Cristo (good flick) on DVD with no problems at all. I'll have to watch a BR tonight to see if I get a problem. I can recall once in the past during a BR I got some weird artifacts (small little multicolored blocks) pop up on screen. Looked really weird almost like data was scramble. Lasted two seconds then was gone and haven't seen it since.

Freezes really didn't bother me before, Uncharted was just a little weird last night because of the audio being slightly off in cut scene.
