PS3 problems and setup issues thread! - Page 12

The following is certainly not a major problem, but it is a bit annoying nonetheless.

I currently have the PS3 hooked up to my Toshiba 34HF83 CRT with the Sony HDMI cable and a Monster HDMI-to-DVI adapter. I seem to be getting the right resolutions for everything, with the maximum output set at 1080i. In the HD resolutions, screen edges are cut off slightly, especially when accessing the PlayStation Store. I can access all the links there, but like I said, it's a little annoying to see stuff cut off. Has anyone else noticed this?

Speaking of those HD resolutions, is there a way to have the XMB be a little bigger on the screen?

Thanks.

Anyone get a snowy screen when booting a game or Blu ray movie? Using HDMI cable with Samsung Lns 3251D Lcd tv. Is this normal?

The overscan settings on your set, and mine, probably are the issue here. Try looking here -> for some dangerous stuff on possible ways to adjust the overscan issue. WARNING - Stupid stuff can fry your set.

Anyone having issues with loading discs? I have a 60 giger that will not recognize discs (PS3, BR, DVD). It's almost as if the optical drive doesn't attempt to read the disc (bad motor?). All other functions seem to be working properly. Downloaded video and games function properly. Sorry if this has already been covered. Thanks in advance!

pikappstrmchaser,

I had this exact same problem with a unit I purchased off eBay. If you have a gift or original receipt, I would exchange the unit at the store you got it from.

I was trying to do this through EBGames/Gamestop, but of course they're all sold out. I decided to go through Sony instead. Call the number on the box and they'll send out a prepaid box. I sent mine in last week and waiting on its return.

Anyone try to play DVDs on their PS3? It took me a while, but I got bluray playback working fine, for some reason my tv wouldn't automatically recognize Component Video Color spacing and had to force the PS3 to output RGB via HDMI and also make sure my PS3 was set to output at 1080i. Now when I tried to play a DVD it switches to 720x480 resolution on my tv and goes into 4:3 mode. Movies are display in 4:3 letterbox instead of just 16:9.

Any ideas how to fix this one? Or does just hdmi dvd playback not work right?

Have you tried the DVD Wide Display setting?

http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...tings.html#840

The PS3 will not upconvert right now, though it's speculated that will be added by firmware update ala the 360, so you'll only get 480p right now.

Purchased a 60gb PS3 a few days ago at my local Wal-Mart.

Not to impressed with the BR player, overheats and locks up sometimes when playing movies. I also get a "crackling" sound sometimes in my speakers, sounds kinda like static. Seems to do this the longer the unit is on?

Overall, I am impressed with the gaming(graphics are killer) and ability to play BR movies all in one box. Plays and functions at a drop of a dime, unlike my Toshiba XA1. I think I'm going to end up returning it or selling it on Ebay.

Mike:

Your unit is defective - that is not normal. Take it back. Sounds like it is overheating and the internal fan is not working right. Does it get hot when it skips?

It doesn't skip, the PS3 just freezes and locks up. I have to switch the power off then on, and then it will work fine again.

My PS3 is now my main DVD player. I wish I did upconverting via HDMI, but it does a decent enough job. It's quieter than the 360 and I don't have room for a stand-alone....

Has anyone else have their PS3 die...I can't even get it to power up...nothing...and I have tried everything and I also have Bd movie inside. This thing is totally dead.

When I'm playing resistance, the "signed in" box at the top right of the screen pops up every two or three minutes. Anybody know why this is happening so frequently?

I have a 60 gig and everything works great. However, since x-mas day, with fairly heavy play, the machine just turns off. This has happened 4 times. Anyone else experience this?

Are you using the wi-fi connection? It's possible you keep losing the signal and reconnecting.

when i hook up my ps3 through just the regular av output slots (r/w/y) i get a buzz and lines moving along my screen. I tested out a couple different tvs and different outputs, and even tried a component cable for one of my tvs which supported that. I found it only works on 1 out of 5 tvs that i have - anyone know why? Is the output plug defective, or do all my tvs have a problem with the ps3

slash: i haven't had thjis problem with any other gaming system before.

Having the same problem, just got my PS3 today. Anyone know know how to fix this?

ok, so I know HDMI problems are rampant, but anyone else experience the following? If so, any suggestions?

I get the ps3 to recognize my display (Optoma HD81) in 1080p (have also tried to force to 1080i, same issue).

When I go to play a movie, either BD or DVD, 9/10 times I lose sync on HDMI. This is not a freeze during the movie, that has never happened to me, but I've only been able to watch 3 so far. When a BD or DVD starts to play, the ps3 loses sync and the Optoma always takes a few seconds to get sync. Then I get a black screen and ps3 stops responding. This happens as soon as I tell the thing to start playing the video. I can still eject the disk, and reinsert, but can't see anything. Last dozen attempts have all failed. I have not swapped out the hdmi cable yet (just actually thought of it). Have not tried any games yet, and I'm not going to spend money on them until this problem is fixed.

Any other suggestions, other than returning it?

Sounds like you have a ground loop, as described here.

I experienced the same thing when I tried using my Sony branded PlayStation2 component cables and someone else on the forums pointed out this issue. It's apparently semi-common (the most common causes being mixed 2-prong and 3-prong power cables, CableTV, or possibly a powered antenna. You could experiment by unplugging the cable/antenna from the TV and see if that changes anything.

Rather than go through the trouble of locating the ground, I went to the intended setup of HDMI and optical (I already had the HDMI cable waiting, but wanted to experiment with the component cables because I had them). No more buzz/hum or lines.

Can everyone who owns a PS3 tell me if this is a good time to buy? Are there any kinks worked out with PS3s in stores now that weren't worked out with the original launch batch? Will there be any updates I should wait for that I wouldn't be able to get in an ordinary firmware update?
Just buy with a return policy...

My first PS3 the DVD player did not load discs.
The 2nd sounded like a hair dryer on high.

The last is just fine, no reason to wait, just get a good one.
In fact reason to buy now, as the BR disc is only included in the first batch, some new ones already are missing it.

Not that missing that movie would matter to me.

Wellll....First, I'm not one to bash anybody for anything for xyz reason.
Every person has their own reason for what 'they' want and how 'they' like to have it.
I, for instance, love the PQ of SONY (insert manufacture here) products but I can't tolerate the proprietary technique that they employ.
But to the point, ordered 12/16/06, received 12/21/06, installed 12/22/06
DOA 12/22/06
Called SONY 12/22/06 and was told 7-10 business turn around
It is now 1/05/07 and I have yet to even receive the box to send the unit back so that I can return it to Sony. Called Sony CS and was told that they "didn't know why" it happened but it would be expedited from "here".!!??!!

My only hope is that, maybe , I'll have a completely updated unit when I eventually receive it.

Sorry to vent .....

Thanks for this great thread. Quick question for y'all:

I have a PS3 arriving Monday. To confirm: there is no way to have my PS3 connected via HDMI without first connecting using the supplied cables and changing the video setting? I.e., there's no autodetect out of the box?

Thanks in advance.

(This is important for those of us in small New York City apartments with not much space to squeeze in and mess with connections... )
Its works just fine with HDMI only out of the box as long as your TV syncs to it.
muttt, I actually hooked mine up via composite first, but you SHOULD be able to sync to HDMI right away by holding down the power button on the front for 5 sec or so when you first turn it on. You should hear a beep, then you can let go and it should start with 480p and let you select other resolutions from there.

Fantastic, thanks very much guys.

No need to hold anything down here, just hook up the hdmi and turn it on.

It will display over HDMI and ask you if you want to use HDMI then let you make the resolution settings. Thats how mine worked out of the box.
