thank you for the reply. my tv accepts 1080 through an hdmi. i left the setting in the ps3 the way they were but only switched it to hdmi instead of the component plug. i will post some pictures of the way it looks when i get home and get the model number. what should my setting be on the ps3? thanks for your help

Has the 1080i issue been addressed with PS3 games? IIRC, it was up to the developer to support 1080i resolution and if it wasn't supported the game would run in 480p unless you disabled all but the 720p resolution.

I only have a 1080i HDTV and I'm not buying another TV to game on so answering this would greatly help, thanks!

Does it accept 1080i or 1080p or both? Also, plug up just the HDMI cable between the two, then turn everything off. Turn on TV to appropriate input. Turn on the PS3 by the front button and keep the button presed until you hear a beep, about 5 seconds. It will autodetect settings. Then go through the setup.

It has not been universally fixed from Sony, but games have stopped supporting only 1 resolution. So devs have fixed it by supporting 1080i and 720p.

It's all up to the developers.

For instance in Uncharted, they support 1080i/p now. But the developers did that on their own as a nice bone for CRTHDTV owners.

The developers have stated on their blog that the game is meant to be played at 720p and looks best at that resolution.

If only more PS3 games were pretty and nice looking like Uncharted.

What is this about the Bioshock demo defaulting to 1080i?
I tried the demo out and it looks like garbage compared to the PC version, I can't believe all this time porting and we end up w/ a jaggy blurry mess that is even worse looking that the 360 version.

2k PR rep has even gone on record saying the "big daddy texture was an oversite" or some such BS excuse.

Have any of the pixel counters confirmed the native res of Bioshock PS3 demo yet? It looks very GTA4 res to me, I'm going to guess its 640p native, (I dont have a 1to1 mapping 1080p tv so I cant do the counting myself)

But dag even the title screen looks jaggy on the PS3 ... ugh

Switching it to 720p makes it somewhat better. But its a pretty weak port overall. No question about it. They have a lot of work to do to sell me on the game at full price a year later. At $30 bucks I would buy it, at $60 it better be perfect looking and come with significant added content to have me rebuy it. I played it on PC when it was out... so the "novelty" factor is lost on me as far as the original sory goes.

2K has another update on what the issues w/ Bioshock are, they have reposted a new 360vs PS3 side by side. I also played through the demo more last night at 720p

I feel like 90% of it looks great, but some textures are real bad, for instance when you go into aim mode on the revolver the chamber texture is low res and has some really large blocks.

But the 360vsPS3 shots they have posted are pretty close overall.

I also have the PC version and can run it at 1080p on my middle of the road gaming rig and it definitely is way above both console versions.

I'm still getting the PS3 version tho, I feel like the game really is that good and my PC is upstairs on my 24" but my PS3 is on a 40" downstairs in the HT room so I kinda need to play it there

2k has come out and said that the 1080 mode is definitely not as good as the 720 mode, but such is the case for 99% of all PS3/360 games since almost none of them render natively at 1080p except for stuff like Calling all Cars

Do any of you ever experience what almost seems to be a color loss issue? Sometimes the PS3 will seem to loose reds or yellows...with the picture being messed up. Sometime I just have to restart and it is fine, but this happens all the time. Wondering if it's the set, but I think it's the PS3. If you haven't had this problem, have you heard of it or know of a fix anywhere? I've tried using all the display settings for the PS3 and TV and have tried 3 different hdmi cables. I'm using a Panasonic TH-42pz85u and Sony HT-ss2300 receiver w/ hdmi. Any help is appreciated!!

Check out the pics showing the problem!!

So I bought the PS3 (80GB) but I'm having a problem with my monitor.

I'm using a Dell 2405 which supports 1080p (works flawlessly on my X-Box 360). However, it doesn't support HDCP so I thought I had two options:

1) Use component inputs on the monitor.

The monitor displays "Cannot display signal" when I select 1080p on the PS3.

2) Use my X2VGA2 VGA box to convert from component to VGA. This partially works but the display isn't correct. (eg. it's cutting off the right-side of the image) Take a look at the date in the top-right:

Can I not use my X2VGA2 with my Dell 2405 to have 1080p? Please say I'm doing something wrong and that I can easily make this work?
I would recommend looking into a HDCP stripper box, there are a few third party solutions out there that will probably do the conversion better than the box you used. It's either a misread by the monitor or the box, but I would guess the box as the most likely culprit.

Newbie, question. Replacing a Kenwood vr-6070 for my ps3. Since the ps3 decodes the true hd & the master can I get away with hdmi 1.1 Looking at Onkyo tx-sr605 or 674 roughly $275 and $200 respectively. A Sony str-dg810 for $130. Also my dlp does have hdmi inputs. Any other receivers in that price range, sub $300. Harmon Kardon avr-347 maybe right at $300. This set up is for gaming, then movies in blu-ray. Advice ?

I've deteremined it is the receiver. I have a Sony HT-SS2300 and there is nothing wrong with it, just some sort of a compatability issue with the PS3. Someone in another forum has the same problem with a different Sony receiver. You'd think they would get along marvelously...if anyone hears more about this please let me know!

New user here. Glad I found this forum.

I just bought a Samsung LN46A550 LCD TV and am having trouble getting games to play in 1080p. Main game I'm playing now is Top Spin 3 which supports 1080p but it will only output in 720p.

I have the PS3 connected via HDMI to the tv and am at a loss? Any suggestions?
I don't think that is a problem with your TV, it's a PS3 thing. Go to the PS3's video settings and uncheck 720p and 1080i; this forces the game into 1080p.

Thanks for your quick reply. Tried unchecking 720p and 1080i but instead of displaying the game in 1080p it displays the game in 480. Tried to uncheck 480 but it's greyed out and I can't disable it.

Is there anything else you can suggest?

PS. The PS3's menu displays at 1080p, not sure if that helps in any suggestions, as I'm not sure why the game won't do the 1080p as well. I also double checked and the games does indeed list 1080p as a supported res...
Hm, then I am not sure. Do you know if the firmware is up to date? Looks like the latest one is 9-10-08:

Thanks Martez. I'll give it a try.

On another note, I notice in this thread lots of speak about "HDCP handshake" and a search for a definition only yields references but no definition. What does this mean? Thanks for your patience.

Dont worry about it your TV can handshake just fine. It essentially is a like a digital signature method where the devices both ends of the cable talk to make sure they are real and neither will pirate that content... Some monitors and cheap TVs dont do this well.

Have you tried resetting the video output settings on the PS3 with the hold the on button til you hear beeps method? And also try any free demo for the following games: Pixeljunk anything, Flow, Virtua Tennis, Lair. They are 100% guaranteed to work in 1080p. If those work at 1080p after you reset your video settings, then all is well and it may be an issue with Virtua Tennis.

Thanks for hte suggestion, I never thought of trying a 1080p demo. Will do right now and hopefully this will tell me what's going on.

EDIT: Well the demo for Pixeljunk Eden plays at 1080p, so it must be the Top Spin 3 disc. I wonder if Best Buy will exchange it even if its been more than a month since I got it. Thanks for the suggestion andydumi and everyone's elses suggestions.
Hm. So I just got Fifa '09 and, though EA Sports states support up to only 720p, its playing at 1080p. Top Spin 3 that supports 1080p will only play in 720p and Fifa '09 that supports only 720p is playing at 1080p. Something wiht my PS3 must be wonky?!?!

I recently bought a Panasonic Plasma TV and moved my PS3 from my Sony 910 CRT HD TV to the Plasma. I moved the Sony TV to the kid's playroom. The PS3 works fine on the plasma but when I tried to reconnect it to the Sony TV, I get no picture or sound. I've tried connecting it to the Sony CRT with an HDMI to DVI cable, a PS3 component cable and the standard cable that came with the PS3. The PS3 is powering up OK and after moving it back to the Plasma it works fine.

I played with the settings on the PS3 while connected to the plasma to see if that would help. The Sony TV works fine when watching cable tv. I'm convinced its a setting on the PS3 but not sure which one it is. I'm tempted to reset the player but don't want to lose all the settings.

Any suggestions?

My friend is trying to set up his new 80GB PS3 to his Philips 42TA648BX/37 but we hit a major snag. He has it hooked up via HDMI but, despite the fact that his set is a 1080p display, we can't seem to get his PS3 set to anything beyond 480p.

His PS3 is already running on the 2.50 firmware update. The TV sort of seems to recognize that it's receiving a 1080p signal but refuses to output any video and the PS3 simply reverts back to 480p. As you can guess, he doesn't even get to watch BD's on it due to the forced resolution cap.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

What cables is he using? And did you do the video reset on the PS3 once it was hooked up?
1080p will only work via component or HDMI cables.

Try connecting the PS3 to the sony TV. Power up the PS3 by touching the I/O on/off button and then hold your finger on it. After a good 10-15 seconds, the PS3 should beat a few times and will reset the settings. This should help you get it working on the Sony TV.

Did you go through automatic video detection setup?
We did try the auto-detect and tried to reset the video settings. But it keeps defaulting to 480p and wont output anything beyond that to the set. I think maybe it's the HDMI cable (perhaps it's defective) or, worse, the TV. I tried helping him by following the same procedure I did with my PS3. It should have been a snap for him but it wasn't.

Try:

1. Another HDMI cable (known working one)
2. All HDMI ports on TV (maybe only 1 port is jacked up)
3. Try PS3 w/ component cables and see if you can get higher than 480p
4. Try the PS3 on another TV (yours maybe) and see if he can get 1080p.

Basically just try to isolate the problem to one piece of hardware if possible.

Will resetting the settings affect hard drive in any way? There is a lot of stuff stored on it. Don't ask me what's stored there; kids have games saved, etc.

I was hoping to be able to move the PS3 between the 2 TV's without making a big deal out of it. I'd hate to have to restore settings each time we move it.

It's possible if your tv supports BTB and WTW. It doesn't hurt, try it out and see if you like it or not.
