Sony 60XBR2 and HTPC

Thread Starter
Hello all. I recently upgraded my TV from a Samsung 50" DLP (720P) to the new 60" Sony XBR2. With my old tv, the HTPC was able to run at 1280X720 to coincide with my tv's native resolution. This is running from an Asus 5900 Nvidia card.

My new TV has HDMI inputs and 1080P, so I bought an HDMI TO DVI adapater to connect my HTPC to it. Now, I can't get the resolution to scale to exact size that I need. I'm at work right now, so I can't post the driver versions that I am running right now. I'll post them tonight.

But I just want to know if anyone else has connected an HTPC to this XBR2 via HDMI with success. I think the problem might be with using the HDMI input for a PC. I may need to try connecting the HTPC to my tv via VGA, but that will be might last resort unless I hear otherwise from someone here.

Thanks,
Joe

I have this problem with Panasonic DPD.
And I have aslo check the user manual about 60XBR2
Regarding to the page24
It goes with the notice with

Do not connect a PC to the TV`s HDMI input. Use the PC IN(RGB IN) input instead when connecting a PC
That a upset notice for us, but maybe you could try to use the VGA card with HDMI output to try if there get any problem.
Hope this solution works! lol

I have the UK version of the XBR2, the 55A2000. I connect my HTPC to it via a DVI to HDMI lead, running at 1080P with no problems.

The only downside is that this TV suffers from optical overscan which I can live with for movies, but is a pain when browsing or using the PC as a PC. Theoretically, my video card drivers should allow me to scale the desktop to the viewable TV area, but unfortunately Nvidia have not yet got this to work in their current Vista drivers for my card (8800 GTS).

In short, there is no reason not to use the DVI to HDMI solution unless you require the standard PC resolutions available through the use of a VGA lead.

i have the 40xbr2 and i connect dvi->hdmi w/ absolutely no problems...no overscan at all. I'm running 8800gts with XP Pro...I cannot vouch for vista, as i believe the poster above me said he is having problems w/ it on vista. As long as your running XP you should be able to scale, as the xbr2 are capable of pixel perfect resolution even thru dvi->hdmi. I have even tried w/ an ati x300 mobility card and it was still scaling perfectly.
What video card are you using?

I have my HTPC connected to my 60XBR2 using the HDMI connection. The HTPC has a DVI connection so I use a DVI to HDMI cable. Everything works fine. I had to reduce the overscan slightly using the Nvidia display utility. I think the final resolution was something around 1020 rather than the full 1080.

I couldn't even scale the desktop in XP! Which drivers are you using?

I have XP on a separate partition for HD-DVD so that I can use Reclock and would like to reduce the overscan if possible.

I'm using the 84.21 driver. This is primarily due to the Fusion HD tuner card I'm using but the later Nvidia drivers also provided the ability to adjust for overscan.

I have never seen this explained so maybe I will now. and please if you dont know the answer don't guess. what is supposed to be the reason that we shouldnt use the hdmi connection on this tv?

Yeah, you have to find a way to scale down slightly to compensate for the overscan of these sets. I use an ATI 9600 pro card and the Catalyst drivers (WinXP) which allow you to do this easily. There is no other reason not to use HDMI.

Manual for my Samsung S6767 says the same thing. I didn't believe it so I connected my HTPC thru DVI-HDMI and all is well at 1920x1080.

I have check with 60XBR2 today with XP MCE and Vista & Nvidia 7600GS HDMI output.

unfortunately! Both XP and Vista have the problem with overscan.
For Xp MCE,forceware which is dirver and utility for Nvidia graphic card could adjust to solve the problem of overscan.

But on Vista, I could not do anything with overscan with the forceware!!!
However I find the solution is to download 3rd party s/w "Powerstrip" to solve the problem.

I think the adjustment for overscan is such a stupid thing, because I have heard there is a function called "Dod by Dot" for Sharp LCD TV in its viewmode adjustment.
Do anybody check if there get any same function on 60XBR2?

I could not figure out why 60XBR2 shows overscan since it is designed for HDTV 1080p and we have use the same format on PC and output though HDMI.

Sigh..............

I have a 40xbr2 that I tried to do dvi to hdmi on with a bfg geforce 6800 gt card in it and the text looked very blurry/distorted. I connect the computer via VGA and it worked/looked normal. I'm running windows xp media center edition. Are there any special settings I might be missing to get my TV to work with my computer via dvi-hdmi without it being blurry?

try increasing your windows DPI
but first, you want your resolution at the native 1920x1080 32bit color
Then, Right click desktop -> properties -> appearance tab -> effects button
Check Use the Following method to smooth edges for screen fonts: Select ClearType
Check Use Large Icons
Click OK
Settings Tab -> Advanced button
Under DPI Setting select the dropdown and select Custom Setting
Type in 155 click ok and apply then reboot computer

see if that helps
