Which has best fidelity?

I'M looking to upgrade from my old 20gb ipod and I seems to overwhelmed with choices.

Does one brand have an edge over another in terms of audio quality?

I would imagine audiophiles would of embraced a particular brand, or have helped one gain a reputation.

Has a consensus been made yet?

How does lossless work? Do you just download it from apple and convert mp3s to it? I'll be getting my first ipod in a week or 2 and really don't know much about them.

You cannot download lossless from Itunes. You would want to use real cd's to get your lossless on iPod...at least that is my way. The iTunes site already has compressed all music for sale to 128Kbps so that is not the way to go at it...

basically I have put 300 CD's on my 80 gig in lossless. Each song seems to run around 900 to 1000 Kbps and takes up about half the space a burned CD..

so 1000Kbps compared to 128Kbps makes all the difference for me. I can listen to that on my home system and it sounds about CD quality...

Are you encoding lossless mp3's for the Ipod to play, or are you using a different format? If it's mp3, what codec do you use?

I have all my lossless audio in .flac format, but I'm not sure if any portable music players support that.

itunes also has a setting for lossless mp3s. Or, you could use Windows media player, which also has a lossless setting

Also, if you're getting a 30/80 gig vid ipod, you'll need either Mac or WinXP for itunes v7...one of the lesser thought of requirements, IMHO
