Which Upconverting DVD player for Samsung HC-R4755W

Hope someone here can help..
I have a Samsung HC-R4755W HDTV CRT rear projection television.
It can display (1080i/720p/480p/480i). With the DVD player I have set up on Component cables (Y,Pb,Pr),,I am not getting a very good picture.. I tried using my Xbox 360 as a DVD player and it was better but to me does not look as sharp as it should for 480p..I am assuming the Apex DVD player is able to output 480i and 480P but nothing higher, and definitely does not render a picture on par with the Xbox 360 DVD player with I am pretty sure is rendering 480P. My xbox 360 is also set up on Component.
Anyway I have been looking into getting a DVD that Upscales / upconverts the DVD image so it can be rendered in 720P or 1080i and I am hoping that some of you out there can give some insight into what player will give the best image on the 4755W..I have read that most of the upconverting DVD players are really meant to be used or get the best results with Fixed pixel displays like LCD, Plasma, DLP.., With some eluding to these type of DVD upconverters not giving a pleasing image on CRT RPTV's..
But, After looking over the forum I am seeing that in fact there are DVD upconverting players that do work and give good results with Rear projection CRT based sets..I am looking at the Samsung DVDHD841 since it has DVI and I think it is also able to render 720p / 1080i through component input as well.
Any help will be greatly appreciated..
By the way,,,The games I have played so far on my Xbox 360 with this television look amazing..Better than anything I have seen on a LCD, Plasma, or DLP...

Current set up...
Display~Samsung HCR4755W~DVI input, but only using Component at this time.
DVD player~ Apex AD1165~Progressive scan~connected via component
Alternate DVD player~Xbox 360~connected via component

orror,

Does your display have DVI or HDMI? Licensing restrictions prevent manufacturers from adding DVD upconversion over component.

If your display has DVI or HDMI, look at the Oppo 971H. It is probably the best regarded upscaling DVD player in your price range. You'll want to set it to 1080i output, since your CRT display doesn't natively support 720p.

Thanks for the suggestion..My samsung HCR4755W has 2 component sections that render the HD resolutions and I also have a DVI Dual line port on the back as well..
Also, this CRT Rear projection television does render 720p as well as 1080i..It doesnt upconvert 720p to 1080i so I dont know if that makes it 720p native but it is one of the few HDTV CRT based rear projection televisions that do accept and render 720p as 720p and not convert it to 1080i. I know this for a fact because of the resolution it rendered with Xbox 360 games through the component connections, that I set in the 360 display choice, to play at 720p and then at 1080i. When the screen goes dark you can see a faint vertical scan line going across the screen in 1080i, but in 720p there is no scan line and the screen is still when the screen goes dark..
I just experienced this with Gears of War and COD3. So for anyone out there that didnt think this television did 720p(natively),,,,it does...
Anyway I am not sure if that makes it a good canidate for just about any Upconverting DVD player,,,but I hope it does....Your opinions and suggestions are very much appreciated..

Orror,

Most CRT displays downconverted 720p to either 540p or 480p. Supporting native 720p output to screen is very expensive to do with a CRT display, which is why no major manufacturers implemented that capability.

Most people that that have CRT based RPTV's and CRT direct view tube TV's report seeing very little (if any) difference by using an up-converting DVD player through HDMI or DVI input compared to a standard 480i (or 480p progressive scan) player through analog component YPbPr inputs.

It is generally known that the benefits of having upscaling DVD players with HDMI/DVI output are most evident on fixed pixel displays like DLP, LCoS, plasma, LCD, etc. You definitely will notice a better picture on those, especially with the larger sized screens.

That being said, if you want to check out an upscaling player on your set, have a look at the Sony DVP-NS75H (DVP-NS71HP in Costco). It performs exceptionally well for the price.

get a toshiba hd dvd player, you will have true hd and it also does a great job upconverting regular dvds as well

That's what I did, because I wanted the best upconverting for my SD DVD's - the High Def ones are pretty amazing too! If you are patient (load times) deals can be had on first gen. Toshiba players...

If you decide to go for the HD-DVD player ($399), I would wait two weeks for the second-generation Toshiba HD-A2. It addresses the usability issues (i.e. slow load times) of the first-generation A1 model.

I have this TV HCR4755W and did purchase the Tosh HDDVD HD A2 - and it was underwhelming. My comparison was a Pioneer DV 434 (old DVD player) on the component input and the Tosh on the DVI. Flipping back and forth while comparing and HD DVD to a SD DVD looked remarkably similar. I just didn't get that 499.00 wow factor I was expecting.

I believe that gshelley61 described perfectly.

I ended up getting a Samsung DVD-HD841..It has a very nice design and some nice features..I am getting alot better picture out compared to my old 480p dvd player I have been using..The picture is remarkabley alot better as I am able to render 480p 720p and 1080I on my 4755w through both DVI and component via the hack I found for HD through component..Both hook ups render pretty much the same picture quality..Overall I am very happy with this the hd841 and dont plan up upgrade to a socalled better quality model any time soon...I ended up getting it on ebay for around 30.00.. It was refurbished by samsung and came with everything..The player and the remote look brandnew...So, in addition to getting a great player for my Tv I also got a hell of a deal...
hope this helps and thanks for the reply...

Got the Sony NS75H - very nice. The picture is on par/better than the Toshiba... so I returned the Toshiba. My bet is the TV is the rate limiting issue here.

Since you got the HD841, you might want to see if it is using the latest firmware.
Supposedly the firmware upgrade fixed many shortcomings with these players. You,
may have to redo your hacks however.

the best upconversion I've seen is from a toshiba HD-DVD player.

However as runners up I'd reccomend the Samsung HD-860 and the LG 191h
they're very nice for the money.

Sky042 - do you have the HCR4755W hooked up to the Tosh? Maybe I was missing a setting...

First, there have been problems with the Tosh using HDMI-to-DVI, including black crush. Second, you have to calibrate using AVIA or DVE to properly assess PQ. Either of these factors could have been why you were disappointed.

I see.. well truly the blacks were VERY black, and I hadn't really thought to go through the pain of calibrating. Lesson learned. The Sony - out of the box, look great so no regrest there. Thanks for the advice.
