If your rear speakers require wall mounting, the M1 is a good choice. If your rear speakers are going on a shelf or stands, another pair of 658s would be much better.
What kind of stands are available for the M1?

I hooked up an old 2.1 Atlantic Technology speakers for my rears, to go with my 685 and HTM62 fronts, driven by Denon 2112.

Mostly watched TV so far and I'm not hearing much out of the rears so far. I will have to check out GAme of Thrones again. The Killing had a lot of output from the rears, from sound effects but mores when the music swelled and the output from the rears was really noticeable.

I haven't gotten a sub yet. I haven't watched a Blu-Ray yet but I'm not noticing a lack of bass. Generally don't watch action movies so maybe that's where the bass response of a sub would be noticed. I'm not against getting a sub but this setup seems more than enough to get good output, both in terms of SPL and surround sound envelope.

Haven't listened to music yet though. Don't really sit down to listen to music these days but even if I did, the sub wouldn't have any output on Stereo tracks, right? Especially AirPlay-streamed music?

With proper receiver setting sub will work all the time, regardless of source.

very interesting perspective, and a completely true statement.

No comparison sound-wise to 658s. Chose your priorities. (you can have both,it just costs a lot more)

click on the links in post#10813(on previous page) to see pictures of the stands.
A good sub(expect to pay at least $500) will make everything sound much better, even watching tv.
Check your rear speaker settings, but be aware that the amount of rear channel information when watching tv will vary greatly depending on the channel, the show and how old the show is. Most of the new "prime time" shows on the major networks(incl USA,FX.SYFY etc.) have lots of rear channel sound and are in Dolby Digital 5.1. Some of them(CSI Miami,Hawaii 5-0) have excellent video as well. But, it does vary.

My two main channels are running with the 685 with an older 600 center and two 18"subs in a 9.2 system and I think they are great. Even just two channel music sound fine.

I was thinking of the Hsu VTF1 or the VTF2 Mk 4. It's a very small room though.

I want B&W 804s but they are out of my budget

I used to have Polk Audio fronts but just recently bought a LCR60 S3 in excellent condition and moved the Polks to the rear. I now have 2 LCR60s as the front speakers with an LCR600 as the center.

The problem is that the 600 sounds more muffled and less forward than the 60s. They're plugged up into an Onkyo 3008 and tuned via Audyssey XT32. Is the 600 designed to not sound as loud as the 60?

turn off the audyssey for starters.....
don't listen to him..... audyssey is amazing, esp xt32.
Make sure that your channel levels are set properly. Try the steps in the official audyssey thread.

yeah right..don't listen to me...let the artificial sound control determine how your speakers sound

a true audiophile turns off all enhancements and uses direct in or pure direct for music..but what do i know
post #10849 of 13875
here is the rears setup with panels.

The ones that just arrived from sears were double boxed and flawless..the ones from Sam's ,the 24x40's, were single boxed and the cloth is not tight and a little frumpy looking..guess I'll see if i can get an exchange after seeing how these just arrived. Sam's did not have the 24x24 in gray thus two different purchases.

Right and that implies a large, properly-proportioned and properly-constructed room with careful and diligent installation of acoustical treatments that are effective down into the low bass range. We all have that.

oh god..not again..the audyssey argument..we went through this awhile ago on another thread...so I'll just leave it as IMO.
I am not an audyssey enthusiast and since the OP was not happy with how his speakers sound with it on..try turning it off and on and go from there till you find the right sound you are looking for

You need to compare Audyssey with "pure" mode. If you like "pure" more, then there was something wrong done at Audyssey setup.
pure mode is a by pass of electronics from an analog source such as a turntable or a cd player via rca or balanced inputs..the sound goes directly to the speakers after being amplified, sub woofer is also disabled unless you wire in and out of your sub to the fronts. it is not everybody's cup of tea, it happens to be mine. It is my preference over using audyssey or dsps...just ol' fashioned music.Give it a try sometime, it's just a push of a button on a remote.

but you could be right that the OP needs to recalibrate with his audyssey set up since changing speakers will throw things out of whack and cause a problem with how his speakers sound
post #10856 of 13875
I do love the coloration of sound caused by my room. It makes me a real audiophile, unlike all you others who *gasp* process the signal to sound as it was recorded

...not always. In some setups, you get full-range sound going to all the speakers while the sub gets low bass--i.e., double bass--not a great thing.

shouldn't happen.....pure mode..or perhaps i should say pure direct to clarify, is 2 channel sound only and and sub is disabled....some direct in's on pre amps only allow for 2 channel sound via a default factory setting but can be changed..sorry if i didn't make that clear

On Denon receivers, PURE or PURE DIRECT mode gives you double bass, as I have described. Other brands of equipment may do this as well, but I have no experience with them to know for sure.

i just purchased 4 new M1's (2012 version) and included there is a regular stand as well as a wall mount bracket, but i see no way to ceiling mount..??
I'll be running them as my surround speakers to my CMC2 center & 683 fronts in a 7.1 system. The M1's I'll use as the side surrounds can be wall mounted, but the room is relatively long (27 ft) and I wanted to ceiling mount the rears a bit closer to my listening position, but the included stands won't work.

Any ideas?
