Probably good to have on hand. At least you would be able to compare

What are the plugs supposed to do? In theory, or in your opinion. Curious whether I should be using mine
post #13264 of 13876
Yes, since the ports are in front. Why does one need plugs?

My understanding (which could certainly be flawed) is that you give up some bass extension in exchange for more output in the mid-bass region.
Tone down bass if you have too much bass due to personal tastes, room modes/placement, etc. I wound up for my final setting using the half plugs. Toned down the boominess without sacrificing too much dynamic impact/deep extension. Full plugs took too much dynamic impact away for me and no plugs was a hair on the boomy sounding side. I was even using a sub....

im currently running a yamaha avenatge rx2000 130 wpc

i am planing on on purchasing a seperate amplifier in the future to power the 3 front channels and let the receiever run the rears "there power hungry speakers"

at this time i am leaving the klipsch rsw in wall speakers as they are for now as they only do speacial effects stuff, "eventually i will replace with matching bowres in walls"

i am still have mic thoughts on the center htm61 but i will do some adjusting to see what i can bring out of them,

the old klipsch did have a much brighter sound to them with the horns and worked great for movies. but the bowers has great all around preformance and going to a 3 way system is very nice,

any one have recomendations on frequency settings for the center channel ?

do most people use or dont use the port plugs ?

the room is open with tile floor and vaulted roof "not the best for sound refelection of course"

thanks guys

You can brighten up the HTM61 by using the full plug in the bass port and slightly decreasing the mid frequency and slightly boosting the treble frequencies with EQ. Helped my HTM61 greatly..... But my rooms are normally pretty dead and dampened, heh.

Does anyone know an online dealer for Bowers (maybe an affiliate of this site??)

I need to upgrade my center, and looking for anyone running sales / discounts.
B&W doesn't allow online dealers.

If there is not a B&W dealer in your town, you could buy from dealers out of state via phone and they could ship to you.

Many dealers also sell demo units on AudiogoN & eBay. So you could call those dealers.

There are also unauthorized dealers which could get you 20% off delivered, but you forfeit any warranty.

I just started a thread on this but this seems like a good place to ask the question as well so here goes (forgive the duplicate posts)

Hi, I am constructing a 3.1 system (no rears) for a small living room. I have a pair of bowers and wilkins 685 bookshelf speakers as the front. I also have a single b and w fpm5 speaker which I had been using with my old setup as the the center channel with a pair of b and w cm7 floor standing front speakers (I had to unload the cm7s due to space issues).
I was planning on using the fpm5 as the center for the 685s, but was wondering whether I'd be better off with a htm61 or htm62 as the center---I can't find anywhere local to demo this, however.

any thoughts as to whether I should go with the fpm5 or the htms (and if so the 61 or 62)?

thanks

also I am selling a pair of cm7s for $850 for the pair, pm me if interested

Is it worth the investment to get a pair of B&W CCM663 ceiling speakers? My couch is 14 ft away from TV . My speakers are CM5 bookshelves , ASW610 sub, and a CM5 center They would be mounted above my couch. Couch is up against wall. I'm just curious if it will make a substantial improvement. Thanks for any help guys.
For ceiling speakers I think the CCM663 sound great. I've never heard an "amazing" ceiling speaker to date but sometimes you have to make the best of what your room can support. They are going to sound closer to your fronts than most other options. If you can somehow put CM5s next you your couch, also a great option.

However, I take it you have no walls behind/to the sides?
That's right, no walls on sides, or " near enough". So, to be more exact with set up, couch is 13.5 feet away from TV ( far wall) sitting on a large stand with the CM 5's sitting on the sides of the TV. the center is in the stand. My ceiling is 9 feet high. I am worried about those ceiling speakers "drowning" out my CM 5's. In other words, it just sounding weird because of the set up. What I have now is fine, but like everyone else I am always trying to Find the best set up for the room I have. So, just wondering if installing the speakers would give me that "surround" feeling. Thanks for all your help

Does your receiver/processor allow you to set channel trim levels per speaker? If so, it's a matter of minutes to manually set the trim levels so that all speakers are driven to appropriate volume levels correct at your listening position. If you have automated room correction like Audyssey then so much the better.

Set up your system and no speaker will drown out any other. You should get a convincing surround sound effect, although it won't be quite as ideal as it might be if you could use a pair of CM5s for that duty.

Thanks for the input. My receiver is a pioneer SC-61 so it should be fine. Probably will go through with the purchase , hope for the best.

That will be more than capable of balancing things with MCACC, so if levels was your only concern you will be just fine.

One other suggestion, and just a suggestion. If your speakers are on your TV stand and only say 5' apart from each other, you will great improve soundstage by spreading them out. Place them further from each other on shelves or stands if the room permits.

I've been throwing around the idea of selling my klipsch system and getting some B&W's. I do enjoy my klipsch's very much, but that's all I know. They are the first decent speakers I've owned. I'm ready to try somthing different. The only B&W's I've heard are the 800D's, and that was in a show room that was treated and powered with mcintosh amps. They sounded amazing! Though at home my room is not treated and I run emotiva amps. The 800Ds are way to rich for my blood. So I'm looking at some speakers that are in the 3k price range used. On audiogon I see some 803s and they caught my eye. I like the look of them, but have no idea how the compare to my klipsch's. can anyone comment on this, or recommend another B&W speaker that would be a step above klipsch RF-83?

One time a lady was selling her father's B&W 802N rosewood for $3K + shipping. I almost bought it, except she didn't take PayPal.

But the 802N for $4,000 is feasible.

i just switched from klipsch to bowers speakers "3 weeks ago"

i really did like my klipsch there astheitcaly pleasing to look at, great crisp highs !! great price but it lacks in mids what you get from a 3 way systems

i would look into the 683s they are lamost the sam as the cm9s but half the price tage, they feature the fst drivers 684s are basicaly the same as rf52 amd 62s

i had a rf52ii and rc52ii

im still using my klipsch inwalls for my rears for now and my rw12d subwoofers,

683 can be had at best buy for 1,500.00 i think or cm9s for 2,100.00 both would be a step up from your rf-83s in quality sound.

i still and alway will be a klipsch fan =>

Nice to hear from a former klipsch owner that turned. I'm looking for more of a jump in quality, more like 803s or 804d. If the 804d is substantially better the the s line then maybe ill save up for awhile longer. I'm also looking for used not new. I can find some older flagship models for a lot less. Just asking for some suggestions on b&w in general, I know nothing really of there current lines or older lines.

A lot of nice rooms indeed. I don't like that most choose to hide the equipment, well the speakers anyways.
