Pioneer BDP-HD1 Just bought one! - Page 2

Chris, I hate to rain on your launch parade,

But I am a Pioneer fanboy, and I want my first BD player to be a Pioneer, any word on when the "less elite" decks are likely to hit and what kind of pricing we're looking at? Unfortunately $1249 is a bit out of my range :(

Took the words right out of my mouth!

This is a make or break issue for me on this player. I'd love to upgrade from my Pio Elite 59avi, but not without the ability to decode the HD audio formats.

Guys...Pioneer has had alot of time to build this unit and that ethernet port is not there for show...I would bet the farm that it will be able to update all the new codecs....It just makes common sense...This ethernet feature coupled with the 24Frames makes it the king of the Blu-Ray machines and will look sweet sitting next to my VSX-84TXsi.... :D .....It's beginning to look alot like Christmas!!!!!!! :)

What was the reason for not doing the codecs right out of the box?

The Players have been mass produced and will arrive in the country today (24th), however the final firmware has not gone through all of the QA process.

SONY has no influence on the Pioneer BDP-HD1. We manufacture our own products.

Chris: Thank you for keeping us up to date. It would be very helpful (for those of that have preordered) if the Pioneer website (or you) posted the OWNERS MANUAL before the units reach retailer dealers. Thanks

Chris,

What is the story on no DTS MA in the Pioneer?

No problems. That's what this Pio guy told me, and he's one of the head guy up here. ;) Since over 6 months he's always telling me "after the PS3, no other choice". And he was right. :D

Thank you for keeping us up to date, even if another Pio guy is telling me the same things just a little bit differentely... ;) I'm a big Pio Elite fan myself.

My only concern is that Pioneer has not announced any advanced audio codec support and their history of poor consumer FW updates (ie: forcing people to take/mail the items to service centers - which is time consuming and expensive).

Chris?

I certainly agree that it "just makes common sense" to do this.

But that means very little when it comes to CE products. I certainly will NOT purchase this player until there is official confirmation that it will internally decode the HD audio formats. And even then, I will probably wait until the FW has actually been released to do the decoding before buying.

P.S. another question for Mr. Walker (or anyone else who knows): will the HD1 be able to output 480i via HDMI for SD DVD's?
I wonder if Ethernet port enabled players might in the future include the ability to buy the codecs that they don't support (it costs pioneer royalties to include them), like you can with PowerDVD

Rob: 480i over HDMI was the deciding factor for me in preordering the Pioneer. Their website says it does this and their current high end SD DVD player does it. I asked Chris to confirm but he never responded. I use an external video processor and want a totally digital path for SD DVDs.

Thanks for the reply. My Pio Elite 59avi does this, so I was hopeful that their first BD player would as well, I just wasn't sure.
So still no official confirmation on 480i on SD DVDs? Is there a link to where it says 480i is supported on their website? Is SACD or DVD-A supported? If it can't replace my 79AVi I'll consider getting a PS-3 to tide me over.

Is it just me or has information on this player been extremely sparse considering its release is imminent?

The website info lists 480i support over HMDI. Don't remember exact page so to confirm you will have to check all of them. Not an issue for me but I don't think the player supports CD playback.
Ok I did see the 480i HDMI on the site finally. I find it hard to believe they would release a player without CD, do the other Blu-ray players (Panny, Samsung etc) play CD?

Well guys, no response from Chris...This isn't very reassuring...Hmmmm. May have to keep the Panny after all...Too bad... :( I was kinda hoping that this delay was to make sure the unit had the ability to update the new codecs and hopefully it "is" the reason...Doesn't take that long to pass QC....and the units have been here for a week now. If they wanted christmas sales, they're cutting it kinda close... :(
post #48 of 175
It's a holiday weekend, and he probably isn't going to share anything new until the thing is on the trucks and the asprin starts working ;)

I'm going up to Tweeters today and see if I can pump some info out of anyone...This is getting ridiculous... :( Then I'm gonna call Pioneer and see if I can shake some info out of someone!
I've been working at my local Tweeter, here in south jersey for about 16 months now. The Pioneer we have is a demo only. I'll check for ETA's today when i go in..

Going from being a member here and 4 other HT forums, a hobbyyist for years, a brick, block&concrete mason for 23 years, to working with all the toys has been a blast.

No offense, but can you read? Some retailers computer system gives you a release date, and you take that as gospel? Chris said the players got here on the 24th.. that's not a week ago, that's Friday... You going to call Chris' boss and complain? He is this player. We are lucky to have somebody so closely tied to a product giving you answers, please don't send him running.

QC, processing, shipping to distribution warehouses. etc... it takes time.... hopefully these will get through QC without a hitch and be on their way.

And can you, or the mods, please change the title of your thread... it is misleading.

Not that it is any of your business, but I did try to change the title of this thread, but it won't let me. (and I am offended)... I can change the content of the post but not the title. (if someone can tell me how well thats cool)...anyways, this player has been delayed twice at least and what I do, and who I call is my peragative. So if you really don't have some news about this player, please keep your comments to yourself. There are several posters in this thread and others who have asked Chris reasonable questions...He could have replied with something....Anyways, It is all moot...Because I decided I don't want to buy this player anymore...Got my 1249.99 refunded today. and going to wait for second generation....PEACE!...Have a nice day!... :)

I am sure Chris Walker has better things to do than sit around all day and answer posts like yours on AVS.. like maybe working on getting the product out the door :)

Your attitude seemed childish, and your inpatience gives creed to my hunches about you... it's my perogative to comment on your posts in a public forum.... no name calling, no offensive behavior, just commentary.. there were parts of my reply that were correcting false information you stated (i.e. thae players have been on shore for a week), and pointing out some of the realities in getting a product on the shelf, which takes time.

Have fun waiting for 2G.. I am sure there won't be delays with those either

Chris.. The others around here still hope to hear from you soon... I am sure you guys will have a great product that is worth waiting for.

Has anyone received further information on an expected ship date? The post yesterday saying that Pioneer was going to set on the units until an end of January release makes no sense from a business standpoint unless there are serious hardware/firmware issues e.g. like Toshiba's faulty G2 ICs. Thanks
post #56 of 175
I talked to my local tweeters that I have a pioneer on order and they confirmed that it is pushed back to late January. I'm going to pick up the Sony (made by pioneer)! Tried of waiting. When I found this out I was going to keep the panny that I have at the moment until the CUE bug appeared in BD. Hopefully the sony will work out.

Releasing a product that can't read Blu-ray recordable media appears to be more of a moral issue for Pioneer than for Sony. :)

Alex: Nice to know that you still visit this battlefront. Your knowledge is much appreciated. In regard to above, the time comes to do your business or get off the pot. Pioneer has been on the pot a long, long time for this one and you know what that does to certain blood vessals! I am now trying to decide between the Sony or Panny. If PS3's were easily available, I would use that as a stop gap until G2 Blu-ray players are available.

I was looking forward to playing with one but if it is going to be the end of januay... How many more delays will they have? I am happy with the Panny (good thing) but I just wanted to compare them...

I hit a Tweeter in my area today and their company info is 12/4 as a release date, they have no update past that and they checked the system for me to verify that--I wouldn't be thinking late January unless Walkamo puts up a post saying that is what is happening :)
