If you already have a new bulb why not replace and hold your original as a spare?
I'd imagine at this point it's way more likely that his present bulb will simply just dim and die. I'd guess that a new bulb is way more likely to explode in a PJ, than one that's demonstrated how stable it is over 8000 hrs.
The brightness improvement from changing out the lamp will more than make up for the risk though...
BTW, I also have a lamp with around this many hours on it (it's my backup) and another with over 5000. Amazing how long those OEM lamps last in the HD1000s. Sad that the color wheels don't last half as long as the lamps do
