Best affordable DVD player that does 720p / 1080i over component?

Maybe I'm asking too much, since 720p /1080i over component cables seems to be getting harder to find. Or I've been looking in the wrong places.

I know you guys can help

Thanks!

Check out the Emergency Upscaling DVD Player Recomendation System sticky, in the first post, toward the bottom of the post are mentioned 4 players. Upscaling over Component has basicly been done away with due to copy right infringement fears so it's getting harder to find these things. Try Ebay.

I looked for the models in some of the sticky threads here.

AVeL LinkPlayer2- looks like the best bet so far. It seems to be actually available, brand new, and sends out 720p / 1080i over that odd converter cable. But if it works, that's fine by me. A little pricey, maybe.

Samsung DVD-HD841 - getting hard to find, but looks to still be available.

Zenith DVB 31 - hard to find, might have to hack the firmware, will probably cross this one off my list.

So, does anyone have the ACeL LinkPlayer2? Comments?

edit: I just saw this:

The LinkPlayer2 displays out high definition videos on your screen. The main chip (Sigma Designs EM8620L) can decode a high resolution image for you. And this product can playback standard MPEG1/2/Xvid/DivX®, also high def videos created by MPEG2-TS, Microsoft Windows Media® Video (WMV9), DivX® HD.
Can I play commertial DVD-Video by 720p HD?

A: No, AVLP2's analog out doesn't support HDCP copy protection.

The other option for me, for various reasons, would be to find a A/V switch that will handle HDMI. My new TV only has 1 HDMI input

I recommend the Oppo 970 - it beats the pants off the rest of them.

It can be modified to output over component.

Sweet! I think that's going to be the one, as long as it will play regular, commercial DVDs at 1080i over component... looks like it will, and the price is right.

I'm sure the Oppo 970 would be great, but I'm not very good at modifying things

Thanks all.

I recommend you search for H4000 on other threads for multiple problems with the H4000...I think you'll regret getting one.

I believe it's just copying different firmware, burning a disc, and following the standard firmware update sequence for the Oppo 970. No tools required.

Cheapest, decent component upconversion is LG DVB418 from ebay (refurb. but still good, they ream you with high shipping though ).
Oppo says component is limited to 480i/480p with commercially released DVDs. What/where are the instructions to firmware upgrade it to do 1080i over component?

Most of the hacks are very simple. Either enter codes on a remote or download and burn a disk to install.

A fairly complete list of players upconverting via component follows:

Helios H4000
Kingwell HD 1880
LG DVB 418 (Hacked)
LG LDA 511 (Hacked)
LG LDA 531 (Hacked)
Maya
Momitsu V880
NeuNeo (see Helios H4000)
Oppo 970 (Hacked)
Samsung 841 (Hacked)
Samsung 941 (Hacked)
Zenith DVB 318 (Hacked)

I want a non-hdcp, region-free upscaling DVD player that can do it via component. What are the recommendations? I have a Samsung DVD-HD841, but I don't have the remote for it so I can't do the HDCP hack for it yet. I am considering the NeoDigits and the Oppo. What do you think would be best?

Zenith DVB612 has both HDMI and component 1080i/720p/480p and is available form Circuit City and CompUSA for $60. $20 rebate from CC through 12/02/06. Based on my 1 week use, I highly recommend it.

I also have a Zenith DVB612 and have been happy with it so far. However, I think the upconverting-over-component aspect is a little misleading. All copyrighted DVDs are limited to 480i or 480p over component, according to the manual and my experience. Only non-copyrighted DVDs will do 720p/1080i over component.

Check the following link to see if there are region free hacks for the NeoDigits(?), Oppo , and Samsung:

http://www.videohelp.com/

I know the LG players listed in post #12 can be made region free and I think the NeuNeo (Helios) as well as the Kingwell, Maya, and Momitsu are region free out of the box but I'm not sure. Doing a search for those brands would probably produce a definitive answer.

I went back to Sears in Santa Fe, NM to get a working remote for the 27 inch CRT HD TV I got for <$200. I ended up with a remote that works for my Samsung DVD-hd841. I have made it HDCP-free, but can't get the hacks for region-free to work. Any suggestions?

A question about the Oppo player. Does the hacked firmware allow it to play copy-righted DVDs at 1080I over component? Also what's the max forwarding speed on the player and can you do time seek on it?

Bump! I would like to know as well. Anyone?

I've got a Zenith DVB318, which outputs SD-DVDs via component at 720p/1080i. All you do is insert the DVD you want to play, start the movie, hit stop, and then push the front panel resolution button till it says 720p or 1080i, and then hit play. No biggie and certainly not much of a hack, per se.

This is sad...

On 11/24 I direct ordered the NeoDigits H4000 so I could upconvert over component. It said IN STOCK. Here it is 12/6 and my order still says PENDING. I heard from them once saying it was backordered until 12/4. Well, 12/4 came and went and it hasn't shipped. I haven't heard from them since.

The website still says IN STOCK. Yeah, right.

I am so sick and tired of all these places saying items are in stock when they are actually backordered.

I might have to try the Zenith DVB318, or maybe hack the Oppo 970, but there is no quick way to contact NeoDogits to cancel my order.

Who would have thought this would have turned into a two week affair.

To be fair, I just heard from NeoDigits- the unit will ship out on the 8th. They gave me some money off for the hassle.

We'll see.

I have the TV and the AMAZING component cable from Blue Jeans (Belden 7710A), just need the player.

Please keep us updated. I'm also looking for a 1080p over component player. Did you order directly from NeoDigits?

Hello Bobkats6

Do you know if this LG player is region free (i.e., not only region1 but all regions)

Thanks

I recently helped my aunt and uncle get a Sony 60" SXRD HDTV and needed an upconverting dvd player to complement it. After trying the Samsung DVD-HD860 upconverting player and seeing how terrible it looked when stacked up against my old Sony DVP-NC555ES 480p dvd player we took it back and exchanged it for a Denon DVD757 1080p upconverting dvd player. I cannot give a higher recommendation to another dvd player in this price range for what it is capable of. Denon's upconverting player absolutely blew my mind with it's 'near' HD quality dvd picture and flawless operation. I had brought over my HD-DVD player and King Kong and when we compaired the HD-DVD King Kong to the DVD King Kong you could tell which was which, but through the Denon player the DVD image wasn't totally outdone, it was more like a variation on the theme instead of a sub-standard quality version of the film. The Denon DVD757 is worth every cent!
