I heard that the power supply unit on these TVs can go out, but I'm not sure why it would happen. Is there any way to test the PS unit to see if its bad, and if it is, how do I get a new/used one to replace it? By the way, I've tried switching the on/off switch on the back and nothing happens. There is no light in front of the TV like there was when it worked. Thanks for helping.

it's absolutely the fuse. My brother-in-law did the exact same thing...you probably used one screw that was a little too long and disrupted the fuse-link. In his case he shattered the fuse, and it was about $2 to replace it. Radio shack has a near-match for it...I think it's a slo-blow not a quick-acting fuse...but whatever the case proved to be an adequate replacement.

A mechanic said that power board is fine, & it is a mainboard issue.

Where can I get a mainboard for this? Olevia service is now handled by another company & they will not sell spare parts.

Is it possible to put some other motherboard in this?

Thanks.

If you figure out how to get a mainboard for yours please let me know - mine's got the same issue and I can't believe I'm discussing this over a 2 year old TV! Anyone wanna buy mine for parts? Everything but the mainboard proved to work just fine.

Does anyone have a copy of the firmware and the other updater software (usb->serial, firmware downloader). I have the earlier version of the 542i purchased in Dec 06.

I am also having this issue. Tv turns on fine, but I have to flip through the different sources 4 to 5 times before any of the functions work (volume, menu, etc etc). Even at that point when they do start to work, I still cannot change the channel. When I try to, it mutes the channel I'm on..
And once in a great while, I can turn on the tv and it will work fine.

Does anyone know what kind of problem this is? I purchased a harmony 550 thinking it was a remote issue, and that did not solve the problem. Instead the Harmony (Brand new) started mimicking the same mute, and stalling problems my current remote has with the tv.

I even have my FM# but the olevia site does not recognize it, so I cannot download the firmware update.

Any help on the issue or where to get the software would help greatly.

Thank you AVS.

i have the firmware 542_B11_061218A but don't know how to attached to this post.
When you reply to post you will have an option of "Attach Files" and "Manage Attachments". Click the button and select the file.

Once you submit reply it will be there for the world to see!

I just had my ATSC tuner burn out on my 542_B11. . .Hoping a firmware update will fix it. . . not likely, but hopeful. Seems Olevia is no longer offering the file.
i believe attached is limited to 500k only. Firmware file is too big to attached. Just PM with your email address i can send it if you need. Does any one has an order version?

I Purchased the 542i-B12 February 2009 and up until late Saturday night (9/12/2009) I have loved it. I turned off the TV to go to bed only to return a few minutes later to try and turn it on. Well, the blue led on the front of the set was furiously and intermitently blinking and a corresponding soft clicking sound and it will not power up. I turn off the power switch on the back toggle, let it rest for a few hours on Sunday to no avail. I switched where it was plugged in on the power strip to no avail. Every time I switch the back toggle switch on the blue blinking and soft clicking return and it will not turn on.

It has never been mounted and I have not noticed any other power up issues.

Could it be a fuse, even though it it clicking? Could it be a frizzy power supply board? Does this sound like an issue with the mother board? Are there any parts available still for the bankrupt Olevia?

Just trying to get an idea if it is worth getting a technician to check it out?

Any help will be appreciated!!!

I can host the files, i sent a pm with my email address
post #1421 of 1469
I have started a thread on my unused forums with the firmware I've been sent. Feel free to use this thread to host other firmware versions or related files. Let me know if theres any issues with it.

http://forums.newagekllrz.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17

I imposed a 10mb filesize limit, so there should be no issues posting firmware or related files up there.

I am also having this same identical problem. Don't bother with the firmware update, I did it yesterday and the TV still behave exactly the same. You can't change the channels up or down with the remote or physically on the tv. You can enter the channel manually and then pressing enter. Does anyone know which part controls this so maybe I can repair it myself? Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem, too. The only way to change the channels is to punch in the number on the remote. Another problem I have is there is no sound to the speakers. I have to use the speakers on the home theater to get the audio. Any ideas? Thanks.

Recently, my Olevia 542i (from MicroCenter BF '06) stopped responding to up/down channel commands and some other weird behavior.

Upon delving deep into the morass that is the Setup Menu, I found that the Showroom Mode had become engaged for no reason that I could fathom. I corrected that and things returned to "normal".

Now, two weeks down the road, the set has been responding sporadically to remote commands. After changing remote batteries without any change in response, the set has finally decided to go on strike.

The 542i was OFF, with its little blue light ON. I pressed ON on the remote and the blue light went off. The set, however, did not turn on.

I checked the switch in the back (ON) and pulled the power cord. I waited an hour, searched the web and tried again. Mercifully, it came back on.

How hard is it to check those power supply capacitors?

Update 2009-11-19: A week after original post, set turned on reluctantly, then not at all. Can't find any service manual, so I'm going in blind. Wish me luck.

The TV is now working fine. Using Component input and not HDMI solved the problems & the green/purple color issue also does not happen anymore. This TV has a mind of its own.

For the firmware upgrade I had issues since I could not get the driver. I gave up on that.

I go through a Comcast HD tuner & remote to change channels so I've never had the channel issue.

I fixed the problem with the channel change by trying jdiyef's solution. Thank you for the post, jdiyef! Just want to add a little more details for other people. After changing the setting from Showroom to Home, the up/down button still didn't work. I had to turn off the TV and unplug. After turning it back on, I did Channel Search and after that everything was working well. The Channel Search may not be necessary. I tried it before when the up/down button did not work and there was no response. As soon as it started to search channels I realized it the problem was fixed. Hope this is helpful. Still havn't figure out how to get the sound to the speakers.

Just as a data point, we passed three years now (microcenter BF 06 purchase )with very heavy use with just one problem. That is that I have discovered taking a break from comcast and using Over the air, that the tuner is exceptionally poor. It works much worse than a second TV we have and much worse than a standalone tuner we just got. I am taking about testing those in the same location off the same place in the antenna feed. The 542i always gets worse reception -- less channels and those that it gets are worse.

If you go over the air with this set and get less than optimum results, if you have a second set test it in the same location and consider getting a $100 standalone tuner like a Centronics ZAT 502 before going crazy spending on various antenna improvements

Did you ever obtain a copy of the Olevia 542-B11 firmware? The company is gone and I need to update the firmware.

After 5 years with no problems, my 542i seems to be having a problem with the digital tuner. I have the cable line from Comcast going directly into the TV. After doing a fresh channel scan, only the analog stations are watchable. The digital channels seem to be found by the tuner because when I scan up or down to one the channel number will display for a second (6-1 or 10-3 etc.) and then the screen goes blue and says no signal. I have a 13" digital set up the same and it still gets all the channels.
Could the digital tuner have gone bad? In reading the threads associated with the 542i, I haven't heard of a similar situation.
Maybe it's coincidence but my problems started after Comcast opened a new tier of HD channels up in the 800's.

Any ideas?
I just started having the same problem on my 3 year old 542i. It started a couple of weeks ago, when I noticed that channel 3-1 was missing, which had always been available. I thought I would just auto-channel-search and get it back. I now get the same situation, where it seems to find multiple digital channels (~115), and the normal set of analog channels, but up-channel'ing through them only displays the analog ones. The digital ones do the short blip of the channel number, but then 'no signal'. I also get inconsistent results in that I originally was able to auto-search, getting the digital channels to display, but then losing them over a power off and on. Then, auto-search would find digital channels, but not display them. Now, auto-search only finds 2 digital channels! Both of my dvd recorders (Panasonic EZ-28 and EZ-48) still receive digital channels, although I forget if I tried re auto-search'ing them, and am almost afraid to, thinking they might exhibit the same weirdness.
I also suspected a failing tuner, since I had inconsistent results. But it seemed more likely that it's associated with the Comcast change. So, what's going on?

Hello

I just discovered that my several year old Olivea 42 inch TV might be giving me problems with the handshake over my HDMI (HDCP) connection as it passes through my NEW sony reciever.

Now I wish to obtain and implement the FIRMware update for the set to see if that might clear things up. My cable box doesn't look like it will get an update anytime soon. My set works fine otherwise.

Can anyone outline the procedure here to update the FIRMware?

i read back through the forum and found some links to the firmware file and the USB driver ( [forums.newagekllrz.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17) that is suppose to update it I guess.... wasn't there some kind of program I need to run though? I went to the HONG KONG website for Olivea but you can log into the site and emails to them tell me in MISWRITTEN english that they can't serve my needs.

could someone help me in this regard? I read back in this very thread that many did upgrade it back in 2006 or so.
Plus I would like to obtain the most current firmware I could find. If anyone has that. Pluse I read in some forums not to use windows Vista or Windows 7 with this. Is that true?

Does anyone have the INSTRUCTIONS from Olivea on how to perform the firmware upgrade?

Hi:

I've had this TV for 2 years now, and have had no problems. I am looking to move the speakers from the bottom to the side, and have been looking for the speaker conversion kit that Syntax used to offer. I've noticed that Syntax is no longer around.

I've looked at what needs to be done, and I would probably have to drill holes in the mounts to get them to align with the holes on the side of the TV (what a cash grab from Syntax).

The only real problem I have is the front grill. The grill is one piece, and can't be split. I've been thinking of taking a dremel to this to cut it apart, but I don't think that would be very clean.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I could do, or know where I could get the grills for side mounting the speakers.

Thanks.

I have the zip file and the written instructions.

I am willing to post them if I get an answer from Paul as to 'if' I can post them.

As soon as Paul responds I will let you know.

The "old" Olevia is no longer in business (Syntax-Brillian Corp.)

The product line is now being handled by another "Olevia: company out of Honk Kong.

There is a company they have contracted to offer customer support (Emergence Technology.) Their telephone number is: 1-866-965-3842 and they can be reached Mon-Fri 0700-1800 PST.

They may be able to tell you if parts are available (I got a new remote from them after the original 'died' - I had to pay!) and whatever else you may need.

I remember they sell kits for wall mounting and changing the location of speakers.

You were getting the - channels for free. They are the ota for scrambled channels.

If the provider changes the frequency you will not be able to get them again.

Seems that's what Comcast has done. They did it in my area about three years ago. I called Olevia customer support and they told me I had been stealing signal. If I wanted to receive them I had to pay an upgrade to my cable provider.

The reason the tuner just shows the channel number and then skips is because it knows there is a signal there, but it is not a signal it is able to process, as it has been scrambled to a different frequency.

Yea, I miss my "adult" programing I was getting for free also. C'est la vie!

I suggest anyone needing firmware upgrade info to contact these people below.

If after you contact them you are unable to get the files you need from them, then send me a private email and I will send them to you.

I attempted to post them here but the files exceed, by a lot, the sizes allowed.

You will need to have a gmail account as this is the only server out there, of which I have an account, that will allow these sizes.

There is a company Olevia contracted to offer customer support, Emergence Technology. Their telephone number is: 1-866-965-3842 and they can be reached Mon-Fri 0700-1800 PST.

Good Luck!!
