Just bought Mits 52631 from CC. Warranty Question

Thread Starter
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on EW and where to buy them. I just bought The Mits wd52631 from CC and their warranty is way to high for 4 years. Does any one had any experience on warranties other than those from CC. Thanks

I just purchased the same Mits 52631 last week and added on 2 year extension. Here's why:
Moving part - color wheel
new technology: DLP
Bulb life

None of the above, and perhaps more have a repair history. With the CC EW they have to send someone to your home. I do not feel like putting the thing in my vehicle and carting it around. Even if I did not have to do that I still feel a bit more secure with the 2 year on this particular item. I have previosly passed on these EW's and have never regretted my decision. Consumer Reports recently did a study on this and came to similar conclusions (purchasing for rear projs).

With that said I will tell you that I am pleased with the picture and features. What I am not happy with is the noise from the wheel. I am 51 years old with below average hearing (too many Led Zep, BOC concerts in the 70's). The noise level is unacceptable to me. It is a mid freq buzz, obviously from the color wheel, whenever the TV is on. I can hear it as soon as the TV starts and continues throuh viewing. I have an extensive home theater and find any type of electronic noise unacceptable. I will be calling CC tomorrow to attempt a remedy, other than a total remedy the TV goes. I hope this does not happen as I really like this DLP. In addition it looks real sharp and fits right into my system. Anyone with similar problem.

I bought the WD-52631 about 20 days ago from Circuit City. They wanted me to buy the 2 year extended warranty for $250ish or the 4 year for $450ish. Way too expensive for my liking since i know they make all their money off accessories and ext warranties on your TV. The ext. warranty is inclusive of the manufacturer's warranty, so a 2-year warranty only adds 1 extra year. You may also be using a credit card that extends the warranty. For myself, my credit card doubles the manufacturer's warranty(up to 1 extra year), so in effect, I'm covered for the first 2 years.

so.... purchasing a 2-year extended warranty does nothing for me.

You can go with something like a warrantech repairmaster 5 year extended warranty for $180(non-plasma TV under $2500), that will provide in-home service labor/parts for that time. It won't,however, cover new bulbs. That is a separate warranty.

I bought just a $99 two year bulb warranty extension for my 52631, so I'm taking my chances with the rest.

As far as the noise, I can hear some fan and/or color wheel noise, but the noise level is less than from the Moxie cable box/DVR. My TV is inside an enclosed entertainment unit so maybe the level is less obnoxious than it would be if it was on a stand in the open. Either way I really don't hear either noise when watching TV.
Which is a good thing, since if I closed the entertainment unit doors to block the noise I wouldn't be able to see the TV. ;-)

I bought a Mits. wd-y57 also that had the buzzing noise. It drove me crazy. I called CC and told them, they replaced it without a problem. The new Mits. that i got does not make that buzzing noise. I love the tv by the way that is why i had it replaced with the same tv. I do occassionly hear the cooling fan but no high pitched buzz. By the way, i didn't think it was possible to get too much Led Zepplin. Probably one of the greatest rock band ever!!!!!!

My first 52631 had a great deal of that humming noise that I could hear from 10 feet away. After about 40 cumulative hours of the TV being on it went down enough where I could only hear it from about 4 feet away. I checked out the floor model of the 52631 at CC and it didn't have any noise at all even when I pressed my ear up to the TV. I exchanged out the 52631 for another one... and this one is worse. The hum was even louder, and I decided to see if it would go down after some "breaking in" but after 80 cumulative hours, the buzz is lower, but I can still hear it from 10 feet away and it's pretty annoying and unbearable. (can still hear it with the volume on at a normal level). I am going to exchange it out again this wknd.

I've had my WD-52631 for about a week and the DLP has been great up to two days ago. I have started getting this gray box that pops up over whatever is playing on the screen. Changing the input sometimes makes it go away other times I have to power cycle. I have attached a picture to see if anyone else is having this issue.

Dang, nothing like getting a fairly recent picture. Can you keep posting throughout the game.

That sucks with that gray square though. Have you tried using different displays and see if it goes away?

Went to Circuit City with my complaint about the square showing up on the screen and guess what they told what it was and all is good now. It seems that the blank square was caused by closed captioning being turned on in the menu system.
