Strange you should say that me too haha... no seriously thank you for the intrest. I'm really hoping this will turn out the way I plan. The fabric is a little nerving to me but I'll get through it.

This is a simplistic theater as far a decro goes but I like clean lines, simple is better to me less to break

Short trip I'm back in town.

Well I got the Black GOM done on the right and left soffit. While doing so I found trick I would like to share. This was not something I planned on but it end helping me out allot. When I put the furring strips on the soffits I left about 1/8 of an inch gap between the strip and the wall. I was using a 14" drywall blade to tighten the fabric before stapling and decided to try to stuff the fabric in the gap. WOW worked just like a track system the fabric held fast but I stapled it just to be sure but wow that was easy.

If I was brave I would try to do this all the way around the room

The only other thing I completed was the second HVAC Supply on the right soffit. I'll probably do the cold air return in the back and finish the soffit fabric tomorrow. While in Milwaukee I caught a bug it's starting to clear up but it's slowing me down.

Man typing with one eye closed sucks I got MDF dust in it earlier and it's pretty red.

Notes: Well the first of the fabric has been installed on the soffits. Not as bad as I thought, there are some little wrinkles here and there nothing major, but hay I'm no Sherman .

TIP!!! Fabric made easy on the cheap...

Okay so in the posts just above I noted that I came across a fast way to do fabric by mistake. Now I'm not saying this has never been done but man this is easy. For all you would be fabric people heres a tip.

When you are putting your 1x3 or 1x4" boards up put a drywall blade in between the wall and the wood so it sets right on the blade. Do this all the way across. Then when you put the piece on the front of the soffit leave about 1 - 1.5" of over hang. Start by stapleing the fabric to the lip on the front. Once you have done this pull the fabric straight back till it's slightly loose, Next take the drywall blade you used to set the gap and stuff the fabric in till it's tight.

Things I wish I had done The one thing I did not do was line up the rear middle seams with the very edge of the side soffits. If I had done this the seams for my theater would be perfect.

Well I'm not sure I reinvented the wheel but it sure made me happy I wanted to share. To note I did tact the fabric in the gap with a stapler. But I did it on an angle so must of the staples are hidden.

I'm getting gutzy I think I will try this on the wall. If it work well I will have saved some where from $300-$600 in fabric mate track.

Notes: Other than the cool sucess above I got the last of the HVAC vents in. And of course as planned the back soffit is now covered with the black GOM.

Oh my Gawd I tried to pick a black paint today, what a pain in the. I thought it would be as easy as taking the GOM fabric in and having them match it. Well it did not work they could not get the sensor to match it.

How could something as simple as picking a black turn into something so wrong. Well hopefully I did not mess up, I picked a Behr shade called Galaxy Black. I looks like it has green and blue in it, but the sample looks black, one of those Jedi mind trick paints that drys darker than it goes on.

Oh well I guess if I have to go darker at least I will have to do fewer coats.

Well this was a waste of a day and $25, the paint was mixed wrong it's blue green. So I ask this question if you went to Home Depot, to get paint an when you go to the paint counter the girl said you need paint, I reply yes, too bad j/k then a douche bag guy stepped in between us and started talking to her about after work etc totally disregarding the customer. Would that be far enough for you to speak to a manager about it that compound with the paint being wrong? I mean I remember what it was like to work at a place like that for about 1/3 of the money, but I always tired to do the best I could.

Point being the color is insanely wrong, she had not idea how to do her job. I guess I would not care so much people make mistakes but over the last year I have seen her at the paint counter just about everytime I go there.

Oh well waste of $4 rolls, tray liners, my time, grrr what a day. I give up on painting I guess I should leave it to the father inlaw since he runs a painting buisness I just hate bothering him all the time.

Status: Well I've been sick as ah dog (What does that mean anyway), not much has been done on the theater. I do have some pictures of the work I completed last week so I will share them.

Notes: The backer for the chair rail has been installed, also note worthy the poly batting is now in place.

Notes: Other than the installation of the backer board, and poly battling, I've installed two pieces of the crown molding. I need to tighten the fabric on the stage wall.

Things are moving forward, I don't think the door for the stairs will make it before the new year , nor will the carpet as I want the door in and painted before they do that.

Congrats Don!!! Maybe you better put a plexiglass barrier on the front of the stage now to prevent those little hand prints

Looking good, I really like the double curved step. You got enough room behind that screen for more subs than Art!!! I wish I had more room behind mine, one of my regrets.

Looking great though, can't wait to see the final pics of another great CRT theater!!!
So did you pre wire and frame for a stack/blend??? Another one of my regrets was not framing for an upgrade

Prewire for a blend / stack... hmm yep there is enough wood / framing for 3 G90's. The joist s are triple 2x12's with cross bracing, and the mount plate area is made of 12x2"s as well. I have 3" or 3 1/2" conduit to the projector area. Oh yeah and to make my life eaiser there is that 800 lbs winch

As for more subs than Art hmm my room is about 2/3rd's the size of his. If I put more than 4 of of the Seton subs back there I think I would be bleeding from my pours wait that might be a cool way to go.. Ah I have more importants to live for now.

Things are coming allong nicely I finished painting the main door, and hung it. I just need to adjust the fit a little and cut the mortus?? for the strike plate. Also got the crown molding painted, I guess I'll try to tackel that tonight I hate crown molding even with the sweet Dewalt setup I have still gets me some times. Aww that's what caulk is for...

I'm having to do just about everything my wife has to stay in bed for the next few weeks (Lucky) doctors orders they don't want to take any chances. As for the glass yeah I might have to do that, I wonder what that would look like.. Probably crap.
Locks are cheap Don. I won't let my three little boys in the theater without me.

By the way , matching the black GoM to paint is not real important. Only flash pictures at close range will allow one to see the difference.

Here is my incredible match:

Yeah I gave up on that matching stuff, I just said give me absolute black , set, point, match screw it

I really like those lights on your stage but I have not been able to find them...

Update :

Well what a day I've spent $1200 on the theater. I've decided to go with Fabric mate's system just in case I have to replace the fabric (future proofing). 145' of FS-150 Track @ something like $2.52 a foot. I also placed the order for the wall & column fabric which came in around $800.

Wow does this stuff add up, but it's better to do it right then go back yet again. I can't handle another theater in this house three times is enough. For the next house at least I'll know what to do from day zero.

I guess I better finish the stage, and call the carpet people. That should be another 1,500 - 2,000.

Well I ordered the carpet today they will arrive January 3rd to do the measure, then it may be as long as a three week wait. Turns out the color we picked Africian Violet, from Shaws Exstacy line is a specail order, it's really thick so I guess the weight we want is not stocked.

Price might go down after the measure but even after a 10% discount it's looking like 2k with top pad, labor, and carpet. I can't wait, fabric next week then carpet maybe the following week if I'm lucky.

I'm on vacation right now but I got an email looks like I will be on the road again soon. Man that sucks, I'll be down to the final stretch trim etc and BAM back on the road. Oh well got to pay dah bills right?

Update:

Home depots contractor just left I should finally have the carpet quote tomorrow. I must say they are pretty accurate. None of the previous carpet installations I've had done have ever started with a full floor plan. The guy measured ever corner of the room, stage, riser etc. When it was all said and done he had a full floor plan.

Hopefully I will have the amount owed tomorrow, I hope its less than what they qouted me, since the guy that took the order put 20% waste on the bill.

Update:

Well I decided to hold off on the carpet for now so I can finish any touch ups on the paint and ceiling drywall. I also have a small amount of construction. Even with my air cleaner running all the time there is allot of dust. I really hate drywall and MDF dust ....

The GOM fabrics came litterly over night it's really nice having one of GOM's main offices less than 45 minutes from here. I installed 3, 66 inch panels on the left wall I really like the look of the fabric.

Because we are expecting our first kid I decided to go with Fabricmates track system. I really can't say enough good things about this stuff. It's so easy to use, installation is a breeze. The support staff at the company has been a pleasure to work with, they have been very helpful. Because I choose a thinner than usual fabric I might have to pull the fabric out and put double sided tape on the edge to add to the thickness. Fabricmate has a solution in works for thinner fabrics.

Here are a few photos.

Ryan's Renders

I'm working with Chripie he is doing C4D renders of the room for me. Here is what he has so far. My wife,,, and I have decided not to go with the curved stage. Long story.

Notes:

The frames on the columns will most likely not make the final render. There will be sconces on the side columns. Also note the G90 on the ceiling. Ryan has some update for me which will include the new front, riser, and sconces. Carpet will most likely be a dark violet, although Grey looks pretty good.

Notes:

Early models of my Berklin 090 chairs, I only have one row as of right now. I wish they reclined different, hard to explain if you own them you might understand

Dude, I really like that color a lot. I think I am going to have to copy you. How much was that fabric and where did you get it?

Fabric on the walls cost something like $18.50 a yard, it's GOM 1732 Terebene, purchased it from Fabricmate.com. They also make and sell the track I used which is something like $2.50 a foot.

Funny thing about this fabric Melissa and I had picked all the colors for the room a last year. John Kotches on this forum did a build and used all of the same colors except the tint on the ceiling and the carpet on the floor.

Update The Real World

I have managed to get most of the wall fabric up. I still can not say enough nice things about Fabric Mates track. You can get really good results with the stuff and you end up using allot less staples. There are a few areas that I'm sure I will tweak, I chauk it up to my in experience with the fabric system.

Most of the front right column has been completed. All the power lines have been pulled I hooked up the mains to a regular switch till order the light controller.

On a side note all I can say is wow, I had a boom box paying tonight and I was getting something like 98 DB at just past half volume. The treatments, bass traping, three layers of drywall, green glue, solid doors, and weather stripping payed off Man just think if I had added chrome.

I can't wait to get the carpet in this thing. Not much left to do.

1). Columns and Fabric
2). Carpet
3). Light Control
4). Equipment Rack
5). New Sub Woofer
6). New Surrounds
7). New Center
8). Trim Work and lots of it

That's about it. I think.

Well with a heavy heart and a paranoid brain I have decided to sell my G90 off to someone that will give it a good home. I will be installing the JVC RS1 in place of the Sony G90, unless something better comes out really fast . I do not pretend for one second that the RS1 is gonna be better than the G90. I know I will be loosing allot of the black level in my picture but I gain in allot in other areas. Man I forgot how much the thing weight even with the lens off.

As far as progress I finished the stage front the top of extension will be done later today. Two more columns have been built and covered. This leaves me with 5 more to build. Front door trim has been install and I have reframed the door at the base of the steps. Other than a few small things the construction is now complete. All that is left is pretty much trim and finish.

Things are coming allong nicely the carpet should be here in a bout 7-10 days. In that time i need to patch the mount holes from the G90 and touch up the ceiling in places where the paint is not right.

The Klipsch reference speakers I have are really nice, but I might sell them off and go with something else. The most important part the room is almost complete. From here it will be upgrades to all equipment, my wife will kill me off at some point, hopefully not before my first meet.
