A: Universal remote control manufacturers specify different code for the various television brands out there. Please check with the manufacturer's list for codes listed under RCA, YAMAHA, LG, or Philips televisions. Any code listed under the RCA, YAMAHA, LG, or Philips will work.

What brand of Universal Remote are you trying to program? I have some codes if you will post the brand.

Apparently there are some problems with some universal remotes, one being the later model Dish Network remotes.

i use Comcast remote

Hello new to the site with a couple ?'s about the 537h...
So far I hear its a good tv and you definately cant beat a deal like what is going on at Tiger....
But with all this I want to ask those who own it, what do you think of the outer casing, does it look good?
Or is it just plain like Ive heard?
Also I see from the Tiger pictures that it has alot of logos on the front "HDMI""hdtv" and so on, is this just a sticker or panel logos?
Any info is appreciated...Thanks

Here are the codes for the three most common Comcast remotes. They are all silver in color. If yours is different try the other remotes on the link above.

RCA 0047, 0038, 0090

LG 0056

Philips 0054

Yamaha 0030

My 237 arrived today from newegg via UPS. The box had a small hole on the front that worried me. The ups guy was nice enough to actually open the box for me and help pull the tv slightly out to make sure no physical damage was done from whatever caused the hole. He also hung out in the truck while I quickly plugged it in to check for any catastrophic damage. I found none and was very satisfied with the ups delivery and price from newegg.

I'm actually currently typing this while on the 237. I don't think I'll use it as a monitor, but I just wanted to see how well it worked. Using an nvidia 7800, no adjustments were needed to get 1:1 to work. I just plugged it in and booted right to 1360x768. Text is clear and colors are great. I'd have to sit at least 3 feet back to use this as a monitor though and that's not really an option for me.

Other random thoughts:

0 dead pixels.

It is very bright.

OTA 1080i content looks better to me than OTA 720p.

xbox360 720p hd downloads look fantastic.

I watched the first 5 minutes of LOTR fellowship and the black levels in the opening battles were good. I need to tweak with video essentialsl

My chair actually makes a very good ota hd antenna.

Using the qam cable tuner, I've found my neighbors have "interesting" vod movie nights.

Small amount of backlight in the upper right corner, but I don't even notice it when actually watching something.

TV displayed program titles while using the ota tuner. It also displays the current resolution when displaying the channel.

The PIP is a bit confusing on which source combinations can be shown together. Getting PIP on the screen in the first place is a pain anyways as you have to go through the menu with about 3 or 4 button presses.

SD content is acceptable and actually looks quite good if you try and watch it at 1:1 in an ultra tiny box on screen. Realistically zoomed into a large enough format to watch, it's not great, but not terrible.

The time/date is a bit off. It currently reads nov 28, 2006, as a Thursday?

Local charter seems to have zero hd channels in the clear.

Switching between the ota tuner and regular cable tuner is a PITA...as in you can't do it unless you want to rescan the channels which takes at least 60 seconds. I suppose I knew that going in, but it still irritates me.

No firmware updates were available for me according to the syntax website.

Sound from the speakers is ok. No audible hisses or pops and that's good enough for me considering movies will get pumped through a receiver.

All in all I'm quite pleased for the price I paid and would consider a syntax/olevia again if I was looking at low prices first.

according to type7 tho, it seems the 237 has QAM as well. the fact that he picked up his neighbors' VOD is an example of what you can do with a QAM tuner.

readdressing your original question, the 537H has a universal remote as well. the warranty is a 1 yr onsite warranty while for the 237, you'd need to send it in. also, it looks like TD is actually a 48 hour deal, but I don't know when it began.

the logos are on a sticker which you can easily peel off. IMHO, the casing looks a lot better in person than what you see on the web. in person, i actually like the H style casing better than the V style because it looks sleeker with the speakers on the bottom. I prefer both to the looks of the 542i casing, which has bigger speakers on the bottom.

For those that asked about the Black level on the Olevia's , they are respectable and compete well with most sets costing much more . They are not capable of Samsung/Sony/Sharp black levels however , which is to be expected . Also the LT37HVS is actually a better display than the newer 4 & 5 series in my opinion . I owned a 4 series for a couple days and it was ok but had several issues . I have since seen many 3 , 4 and 5 series units on display and my LT37HVS (with LG panel) is superior on most counts (including black level) . And yes I did do some calibration work on the displays that I checked out . The only advantage that the newer 4 & 5 series have over the older LT37HVS is their 1:1 mode which makes pixel mapping a breeze (the LT37HVS is really tricky in this regard) . Bottom line though is that the Olevia's cannot be beat by anything at their price points and the deals that are out there on these sets make them amazing buys (certainly the best price to performance of any current model LCD) .

Now they just need to offer up some 37" 1080p goodness .

Have Fun ,

Thanks for the info Mojo, I actually like slick logos on sets but engraved or plastered or whatever the correct word would be for that, but you get the point, I hope that sticker is tough, I actually get clowned for leaving some on on equipment.....anyhow which set do you own, my 537h should be arriving by friday.

I wish Olevia site was more professional (registration & download not working). And the traffic to their site will increase significantly as they sold a lot of TVs on BlackFriday.

That manual does not look like the proper manual for the 537H. Specs for the 37" (page 59) state 800:1 Contrast and 9ms Response time.

I did think that was a bit odd, but the procedures should work. I'll let you know on Thursday when my 537 gets here

That's great news for me.

I'll put that up on page 1.

Thanks Type 7.

So apparently the 537H and the 237V have QAM tuners. Can someone confirm this on the 437V?
Yeah, [237] definitely has a qam tuner. I got to watch some of someone's vod Return of the Jedi last night. Whoever it was enjoyed fast forwarding through a lot of it, that is everything except the ewoks

Even the illustrations of the unit shows a different case design. I did get several MB's downloaded from Olevia's website, and what I saw was different than this manual. I'll just wait to see what comes with my 537 when it arrives..

I'll update the one I am hosting with the one on the CD when my 537 gets here if it is different.

i don't own any, and it looks like i won't for a while. just got a cancellation notice for the 537H from J&R, offering me free shipping as a consolation. the TD price is back up as well.

i saw the sticker in several B&M stores tho.

FYI i sent the following email to Oppo's customer service concerning their players and the 537H

> I recently purchased a Syntax Olevia 537H LCD (this is my first HDTV) and decided to upgrade from my old DVD player to one that will compliment and get the most out of my new TV.
>
> After reading a lot of reviews and trying to digest as much info as I can I see that your DVD players are very highly regarded. I also have seen that macroblocking is an issue on certain TVs with the 971 but not the 970 since it has a different chipset. I also have seen a certain review on a review website infer that if you have a smaller television (like my 37 screen) that the video quality between the 971 and 970 may be negligable.
>
> My question for you is whether you know if my television has had reported issues with macroblocking with the 971 and whether the point about the smaller screen size reducing/eliminating the difference in video quality between the 971/970 is accurate.
>
> Thanks,
>
> Cory

Here's their response

Cory,

Direct sales have only shown Syntax Olevia 537H users purchasing the
DV-970HD, so we do not know what macroblocking errors may be evident
with the OPDV971H on this display. Likely it will be a minor annoyance,
as most LCD displays do not have macroblocking errors.

Did you get a call about confirming the charge from J&R at all. I got a call yesterday from thier billing department and they said they were dending my order to shipping. I havent been cancelled yet. Did you order yours when they said they were in stock?

P.S. Does anyone know how good the QAM tuner is on Cablevision service?

Component and set at 720p. I'll have to see if I can make out any difference between setting the 360 at 720 or 1080.

right when i was about to start typing this msg, my phone ringed. it was the J&R's local shipping parterner comfirming for tomorrow at noon, the delivery of my 537H. just as a reference for those who have had their orders canceled or fear that they will be, my order was placed a little after 2pm before the "temp out of stock" went on.

too bad i havent received my VGA cable yet.... gonna have to test the tv with S-Video.

is that possible without having a DTV subscription?

btw, someone once told me that the digital signal is mixed with the analog signal (just like phone and DSL) in the same cable. is it true?

i ordered mine while it was still in stock, not too long before it went out of stock. used Google Checkout for payment. although i received a confirmation email from GC when I placed the order, I never received anything from J&R (until the cancellation email). when I tried to check the order status directly on J&R's website, they had no record of the order.

I ordered mine from TD (with their special) yesterday afternoon and it was shipped today.. I have the UPS tracking number now... pretty good turn around....

I had a hard time placing an order with their website, so I landed up calling them up to place it. The salesman said they were getting slammed with orders for the 537.

I also noticed that my shopping cart still has the 537 with the special price, tempted to try to checkout with it...

I can't wait to compare it to our DISH/ULTRA LCD-40-500 40" in the living room which has an outstanding picture, including great performance with blacks.
Ordered my 537 Monday morning around 6AM when I saw it was back down to a steal from TD with rebate. Received it today! Glad I just went with the budget shipping (which always seems just as fast anyway). Hooked up and looking good tonight!
I will also use this as a pc monitor, what's the best way to connect, and at what resolution? Right now I have it at 1280 x 768,through HDMI. Though will probably try VGA if I can find my old cable. Looks really good, but I'd like to sharpen it up a bit.
Got my 237v from newegg today. No damage and tv is in excellent physical condition. Haven't gotten the dvd and 360 runnin on it yet but the hd channels i pick up are amazing!
I have had the 537 for 2 weeks now and this is what I have found:

1. Sound is distorted or fuzzy at times through the tuner
2. HD picture is outstanding, analog picture terrible, digital acceptable.
3. Remote is fair at best - some severe lagging as to when you push the channel button and when it responds.
4. Excellent gaming images.
5. Firmware upgraded easily.
6. Does not recognize every local HD channel available as does my Hitachi projection HD set does.

All in all nothing that I have researched or seen matches this set for the price even with some of its shortcomings.

maybe the form of payment has an influence on the speed at which the order is processed. and maybe diff cc companies move on with the trasaction at diff speeds.... as soon as i saw the post here mentioning J&R's price drop, i ran to their site.... i knew it wouldnt last long.

Ordered the 537H on TD Monday morning at around 2 am.My doorman had it by 8.30 this morning.Hooked it up a few hours back and it is amazing right out of the box.I had basic cable till now and I cannot believe how I was watching it for so long. The QAM feature is fantastic and it picked digital SD channels and a few HD channels.Noticing things I have never seen before.

As for black levels,I am not an expert but it looks amazing.I saw a few scenes of Sin City on HD and it looked so sharp.Watching Shrek right now and am amazed at the picture quality. If I am using the words amazing, fantastic please forgive me.Truly at a loss for words

ps:Had ordered on J&R on Thanksgiving and cancelled it today. They cancelled it without any fuss. They are probably happy that they have one less order to fulfil :-)
