Someone tried playing avi files encoded with H.264 codec?

It cant be the chipset, maybe a Firmware upgrade can solve the problem...
Just got mine hooked up. Plays all my XVID & Divx. Seems to be having problems with some of my MPEG2 AC3 via analog audio outs. I'll try upgrading the firmware and see if there is any change.

Hi traukostar,
It is the chipset I'm afraid - the chip doesn't support the h264 format. There is a pin-compatible chip out there that does, but we're only speculating that it would be possible to switch them.

Firmware can't help us here - even if there was a software decoder, the CPU wouldn't be fast enough...

But does it support x264 files? for example a .mkv?

New firmware is available that now supports NDAS. its version 1.1.27 available at http://www.mvixusa.com/support/index...nloaditemid=24.

How in the heck am I supposed to know my order number if I ordered this thing last year? Looks like you need to register with a third-party to be able to get NDAS and they'll email you a code within 72 hours? I'm not holding my breath that this is going to work terribly well.
They do make it hard to get support and order this "free" software. You would think they would keep track of all serial numbers of the product they received so we did not have to do their work.

Think yourself lucky, at least you will probably get your keys. As for those of us non-US/Canadian customers, I think we have stuff all chance of getting NDAS working as they clearly state

Same here - I got mine from kjglobal.co.uk.

I've been waiting for NDAS for ages now too! I understand that they've probably been inundated with requests for this and don't have time to develop in-house so have gone for a 3rd party solution. This is totally understandable but why did they have to choose a company that requires you to have a key to use your own hardware!! Maddening!

If anyone manages to get this going in the UK, please post and let us know.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but NDAS is patented by Ximeta, so MVix could never have rolled their own internal version. Ximeta keep the technology to themselves by requiring the MAC address of every storage device which they then link to the ID/KEY they send out to you. In devices where NDAS is an existing feature, the KEY/ID is printed on the case. We aren't in that situation, so we need to send in the MACs.

Personally I would have much preferred if Mvix had gone with an open technology such as Samba/CIFS. This is already supported by all operating systems that matter, whereas NDAS requires an installation for Windows/Mac and is only a BETA driver in Linux (which I use). I'll be doing more work on getting a Samba or NFS server working in the Firmware when I get the chance...

Ah, excuse my ignorance. I was assuming NDAS was just another general name for network attached storage.

If this is the case it must be possible to get a key in the UK, maybe it'll just be a little harder. Really wanna get this going.

With the new firmware released by Mvix, are there good news for samba connectivity bug?

Has anybody tried?

Thankyou-

Samba bug still present

Look here for an Alternitive NDAS ID/key method

http://www.benf.org/other/rapsody/index.html

NDAS network scanner - it will list all the NDAS devices on your subnet (by waiting for 5s, during which at least 1 NDAS HELO is broadcast), and it will use the functions provided in NDASUSER.dll (supplied seperately by XiMeta, you'll have it if you Install Ximedia (TM) NDAS Software that you download from the mvix site) to generate the NDAS ID / Write key.

No way I am going for NDAS. I have seen on the community site that an experimental ftp server can be set up. Let's try to fix that one.

I can appreciate your point of view but my post is ment to help the users intrested in NDAS and may for some reason not have all their information that is needed to get a key or are non-usa owners.

Just trying to help.

I followed that link by dannyv and it seems to work perfect. My network attached Mvix now shows up as a local drive on my computer. Haven't tried to read or write to it though.

I've packaged up a modified version of the 1.1.27 firmware that has telnet, ftp and http running, all appearing to work fine. Ftp upload/download of very large files work fine for me in this version. No warranties or guarantees of course, and it may not work for you at all. :-) Username/password for both telnet and ftp is root/olav, and note specifically that your starting directory for ftp is /root, whereas your internal hard drive is most likely mounted around /tmp/ide/part1/. Note also that accessing some /proc entries using http will freeze the web server.

Glad to here that.

I tried it last night and the drive didn't show up at first. I had to go into device manager and assign it a drive letter then it showed up. I tried writing to it and it copied to the mvix HD but what I copied did not show up on the mvix even though it shows up on the PC. I think my 1.1.27 firmware install got screwed up. I'm going to uninstall the software and reflash the mvix then reinstall the software and see if that helps.

Perpetual98,
Please keep me informed of your further testing.

I was able to move a movie folder off of my Mvix to my local PC, and it worked, but it was slower than heck. I think it took 40 minutes to move a roughtly 4GB folder. I then tried to move 3 movies over the network to the Mvix before I went to bed and it seem to have timed out over the course of the night. I couldn't get my computer to "find" the Mvix again this morning, but I had to get to work and didn't get to play with it. My Mvix was also locked up and I had to remove the power cord to get it to restart.

Maybe the "official" key will be better, but I'm not holding my breath.

My results seem about the same as yours. I tried to move an 800 meg DIVx movie and it said it would take 158 minutes. I canceled the move and tried a smaller file and the copy completed but it did not show up on the MVIX even though it showed up on the MVIX drive on the PC. One thing I noted was on the larger file it went to 50% complete very quickly then slowed to a crawl. I agree with you that I don't think the key from MVIX is going to be any better. If this is the case we better starting opening lots of tickets with their tech support people so they make it a priority.

Here's the bad news. I just got my Ximeta (or whatever it's called) key from Mvix.

It's the exact same key that I got from running the ndasscan.exe file.

I'm now convinced that we're not going to see any improvement on what I ran across last night. Maybe the next firmware release..... lol

Hi Olav,

FT.P and HT.TP are working fine for downloading from the player, but I can't upload anything. I only get "critical transfer errors" from my ftp client. Which ftp client do you recommend?

Edit: Strange enough, I can upload to an USB stick, but not to HDD...

Lets start opening tickets http://www.mvixusa.com/support/index...kets&_a=submit to report the problems and get the techs working on it. The more people report problems the faster we will see a fix. I'm sure they want it working as much as we do because they are paying the license fees for each key.

Ooops. Looking back I can see why my post appears to be a snap at your post, but it is not. Trust me. Notice that there is only a minute difference, so we must have typed our posts at the same time. Still feel sorry. I very much appreciate your (and actually everybody's) help for the community.

No offence taken and your post is more on target then one might think. I've been doing some research on NDAS to find out why its so slow and came up with this intresting bit of information.

I updated my player with olav's fw. I could copy files over ftp to the internal ext2 drive and to an usb(fat32) drive. I got about 800kb/sec (~12min for a 700MB file) speed over wifi with wpa, even whilst watching videos or listening to mp3s. I copied several GBs without any major slow down, glitch or timeout.

Well starting to watch a 720p wmv file from the usb drive while copying to the internal drive made the speed to drop below 400k, but the video played fine and speed went up again after I stopped the video.

Not the fastest way, but so far the most convenient one for me. Smashing work Olav, thanks!

Hi there

Your internal drive is most likely formatted using NTFS. The Linux-kernel on the box does not have NTFS write support at all. You either have to reformat using a bunch of small FAT32 partitions or find a Linux-server and use that to format the drive as EXT2/EXT3. There may or may not exist a Windows-application that will do that for you, I have not checked. (Your USB-stick uses FAT, not NTFS, so it works.)

I'm playing around with fdisk and mke2fs on the Mvix now, to see if can do the partitioning and formatting without the need of a Linux box.

Olav

thank you very much, Olav! I'll try and get it formatted with EXT2/EXT3.

Your firmware is great work, really. Thank you for that too, you made my day!

edit: It's working now - I'm uploading via WLAN at around 2 Mbyte/sec.

Currently running 1.1.26 beta. Downloaded the 1.1.27 zip file from mvix last night. Unzipped and transferred it to my internal hdd on the mvix. When it was done checking the file, a message popped up saying it was not a valid firmware update and it could not proceed. Repeated and got the same message. Sent a ticket to mvix and I'll wait to see what they have to say.
