Mvix Wireless Hi-Definition Media Player (MX-760HD) - Page 17

I got my Mvix 760HD, 3 weeks ago, I have been playing more than 60 different movies and episodes from tv shows.
First Week I was connected to my home network throw cable, playing AVI & MPEG movies from 300 mb to 1.2GB (codecs: xvid & divx only),
I didnt notice any problems.

2nd week I installed an Internal 400gb HDD (Samsung).
I start watching .TS and .AVI files larger than 3 GB. Then I begin to noticed some loss of frames and choppy episodes, specially in the change of scenes or with too much action.
I have read all the messages from this post, and only 3 people ask about this, without ANY answer or solution.
This subject I beleive is very important, because .avi files of only 700mb have this issue too.

.ts files bigger than 3GB are the most jumpy.
But with .avi files encoded in Xvid Mpeg4 codec lower than 700mb??? wtf?

For example:
- 24 s06e22 hr hdtv xvid-nbs (700mb, 960x544)

- Lost 319 hr hdtv xvid-tvff (700mb, 960x528)

The choppy parts in this two examples are insignificant compared with the .TS files, but still its a BIG issue.
This is a preview, only 26 mb, play this on your mvix and put a lot of attention with the change of scenes, some miliseconds of lag!
http://rapidshare.com/files/31950554...py_example.rar

I wonder also if the bitrate of this two episode have something to do.....This example I repeat its insignificant, but the .avi episode size is only 700mb....

Hope someone have an answer, I have tried playing this episode throw another HD, pendrives and Network with the same results.

Sorry for my english, i speak spanish

Thanks!

I upgraded from 1.1.25 without a problem. You could try to downgrade to this version and then try to upgrade to 1.1.27.

@traukostar

Hi, I haven't got any TS or avi files bigger than 3GB, so I cannot comment on that. Anyway, your lost episode example played fine (from usb/fat32). BTW, I am on fw version 1.1.27, and the player is connected to a 30" standard tv only.

Looking at it several times on my laptop and with the player I can see that it is not as smooth on the player, but I still do not find it irritating. Maybe you experience more glitches on your player, maybe my eyes are not as good as yours.

HD rips (960x5xx) - like your example - seem to be encoded with bitrates around 3500kbps. The bitrate of "standard" dvd rip avi files is around 1000kbps. Huge difference and may well be the problem. Although, a 720p wmv file encoded with 6200kbps plays perfectly.

As far as I know the fw has to read the data from file (almost 4x as many in case of HD rips), split audio and video and feed it to the processor. Now, whether it is the hardware that cannot handle high-res xvid or the fw has bugs, I do not know. I am not an expert, but somebody might help out (or correct me).

Thanks to those that have helped supply with NDAS scanners etc.. I'd like to confirm that I've now got my NDAS working in the UK too.

Word of warning, the NDAS Key scanner only works on XP, not on vista (wrong version of packet sniffer gets installed).

It's slow, but it sure beats lugging the Mvix upstairs every time I have a new video!

Let's hope we can get a more open alternative running in the future that doesn't require all this proprietary rubbish.
I didn't read all 17 pages, sorry. I got mine for Christmas and really have not messed with it until last night due to a wireless networking problem with unit. My SSID contains an "_" and the MX-760HD would not allow me to enter that character, not even with a keyboard, so I could never network it. Yesterday I finally got a WET54G for my computer workstation and moved the old WET11 and a hub/switch to the entertainment center so my entertainment devices (PS2, xBox, MX-760HD, PS3 has its own wireless that worked with my existing network) connected to the network. Today I noticed the new firmware and that it mentions adding "_" to the keys, going to test if this also adds "_" support to the SSID tonight if I have time to update the firmware to 1.1.27.

I will say the upscaling to 1080p looks good, I've not compared to others though, so my experience is very limited. I just have a little 24" computer monitor (BenQ FP241W with the 1:1 firmware update) on my entertainment center. With the help of a HD component switch box (some Score System Selector Pro 2.0 thing I found at GameStop, I like it due to the IR remote control, so my Pronto and MX-3000 files where updated to support it. Just wish that all of the inputs supported digital audio, not just the first 3) I have the xBox, PS2, D-Theater VCR using the component input, the PS3 is HDMI, the MX-760HD is DVI, the current sat is still using S-video. Fall/Winter I plan for a new receiver with more inputs, internal upscaling and 7.1.

Maybe this week I will figure out what this NDAS feature they are all excited about is for.
Well I installed NDAS the other day. I would have to say, I wish it was a tad faster but it works like a charm.

To really test the thing out, I used Procoder and took a 1080p .ts movie and reencoded as 720p mpeg2. The source file and the destination file were on the mvix. I then watched an HD planet earth file while I did this and there wasn't even a hiccup. I was really impressed that it worked so well. I can transfer about 5 gigs over NDAS in about 20 mins.

On another note I HIGHLY recommend that any file that you have that stutters or skips or anything and you downloaded it from somewhere, Re-Encode it!

The 1080p .ts file i had skipped and jumped and kicked out at random times so I re-encoded with Procoder in to 720p HD (i would have done 1080p but my tv is 1080i) and once re-encoded the file is perfect. The MPEG2 file is about 30GB and plays fine.

So anyone who is having problems with particular files, try encoding them with a nice encoding program and then try it, I have come to the conclusion that 85% of my problems with files is that it was probably made witha crappy program or it got messed up somewhere along the line. Get a decent encoding program and try rencoding stuff and most of your probs go away.

Oh, and also, the GOTO button riules!! How did it take me 3 months to realize I had that button? Ha!

Finally tested and it appears that the "_" fix for the key also fixes it in the SSID.

Is there a list of drives that are supported internally somewhere? I tried a 500G Maxtor drive, but only ~126G was detected.

Drive Info:
Maxtor (Maxtor Basics ATA/100 Internal Hard Drive Kit)
DiamondMax 20
Buffer Size: 16MB
RPM: 7200
UPC: 751921029921

This is not a problem with the mx-760HD it's a known issue with windows 2000 and windows xp with sp1. The problem is you most likely formated the drive using a PC running one of the above operating systems that does not have 48-bit LBA support enabled.

Refer to the microsoft articles below to correct the problem

For windows xp with sp1

All of my PCs/laptops are running Win XP Pro SP2. All had a newer vertion the mentioned atapi.sys file version and the laptop already had the mentioned registry entry. The way I read the KB article is that the registy entry is ignored on SP2.

Also, I have not formated the drive as nothing is seeing the total size as more than 130G. I wanted to setup the partitions before I format it, but nothing I've tried is showing the full size of the drive. My main system's Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboards that is running a 250G SATA drive on the Intel chipset only sees this Maxtor as 137G on either the Intel or Promise chipsets. I didn't see the reason to let windows load when it was on the Promise controller as the BIOS for the controller was only showing it as 137G. I've put the drive in the MX-760HD and used USB and still had this problem, I put it in my Maxtor EXT 1394/USB2.0 case that runs 160G drive without issue tried both 1394 connection and USB and still only see ~130G of the 500G drive. I'll try a few more things this weekend.

dang man, sounds like the company put the wrong label on the drive and really gave you a 130 GB drive. Keep us updated I would love to hear how this turns out.

I don't think so. I've heard of this same problem with formatting a drive in an external USB/firewire case, and it was a bitch to get it to reformat back to its full capacity.

One of the posts said that they used MHDD to get it back to full cap:

Well that is just it, I didn't even get to the steps of adjusting the partitions or formats as it was showing 0% unallocated space with one 137GB partition (formated Fat32 IIRC) so I didn't even attempt to mess with the partitions. And since SeaGate owns Maxtor I was on the phone with SeaGate tech support for 5-6 hours and it ended up being a bad drive. I exchanged it at my place of purchase since I got it just last week and the new one popped in and saw all 500GB right from the get-go as I had expected the first to do.

The tools from Seagate's tech support would not work on the drive to adjust the LBA size for some reason either, tech said the seagate tools are not up-to-date enough to adjust the Maxtor drive, even though the drive was clearly labeled as being made by SeaGate. Seems like the Seagate-Maxtor merger is not going too smoothly on the tech front to me.

500GB + MX-760HD = happy me!!

Which is a big difference between 1.1.25 and 1.1.17, that 1.1.25 is connecting to network shares with user name "root", while 1.1.17 is connecting with "guest".
I am not sure if this is cause to problem, as if I understand well, according to the smb.config, N2100 should threat root user as guest account, but it is just not work.
And changing "security = share" from "security = user" is not an option, rather a joke...

Have you tried to set the global option
map to guest = Bad Password
in your smb.conf? I've tried it today for the first time and I finally got it working with
security = user
Hope this helps ;D

Hey guys just signed up to the forums to ask a few questions, i read the thread but i couldn't find the answers i was looking for.

I only want to use the Ethernet port to stream movies/shows/music from my pc to my tv, i wont be installing a harddrive. From what i have read people keep complaining about the video skipping or locking up for a few seconds every 20 seconds? With the latest firmware are all these problems fixed?

Also i cant find any information about plugging it into a HDTV/Receiver. I know once i purchase it there will obviously be an instruction manual is there any chance to download it before hand so i can look at the setup. I have a HDTV and a receiver that upscales to highdef so would i be best to run it through the receiver or directly into the hdtv? Will it even work if i plug it into the receiver?

haxplore: 2 MB/s is the average upload rate with WPA encryption. I could even watch a movie at the same time and keep up that rate.

However, I have encountered another problem. I have around 200 mp3s in one folder; whenever i hit the "play" button on the remote control, the mvix just crashes (black screen, no sound). Playing a single mp3 with the OK button works just fine.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

I use ethernet to stream DVD, DVD ISO, DIVX, MP4, MP3, AVI and never had a problem with stalling, audio dropout or skipping. I run the latest firmware 1.1.27. There have been reports of this but mostly with wireless networks. It basically plays anything over my ethernet 100mbt wired network that I stream to it. The only execption is HD content (.ts) which is usually about 7 - 15 gigs in size with a resolution of 1920 x 1280. With this content I do get some audio dropout and freezing both over the network and from the mvix internal hard drive. FF/RWD is a bit of a mess above 8x but mvix knows about it. The audio playlist feature is about as useful as tits on a bull but hopfully mvix will improve on it. It does have its disappointments but overall it is a great product. Its still very new and they do release firmware on a regular basis and the firmware is open source so the mvix user community is also working on improvments. I'm sure in the coming months you will see nice enhancements.

As far as connecting the mvix to your home theater system its really a matter of personal choice. The mvix has HDMI as well as component (RGB) and digital fiber/coax audio output so there are a million posibilities as far as hookup goes. I myself use component to my HDTV and digital optical to my receiver and am very happy with the results.

You can download the owners manual from here.

Hi to everybody.

I have a problem with my MX-760HD (original FW 1.1.27) and a Hitachi 500GB HDD inside it.
When I turn on the device, the media center doesn't recognize the internal HDD. I also tried to refresh several time but nothing happens.
If I turn off the media center and quickly turn it on again, I can see the HDD icon and fully use the disk.
I think the problem happens because the internal HDD need a while to spin up the platters before to be fully ready and the media center doesn't wait enough before to scan the prepherials connected to it.
In fact if I turn off and quicly turn on (before the HDD spin down the platters) the problem disappers.

There is a workaround to this behaviour?
Thank you in advance

Thats a very odd problem.

First check your connections to the hard drive.

It sounds like the MVIX is trying to read the drive before it has a chance to spin up but a refresh should re-read and recognize it. It sounds more like a hardware problem with either the mvix or the hard drive. If you have another hard drive around I would try that and see if the problem still exists. If the problem goes away with the new drive then it most likely is the drive, if it still exist then the MVIX could be bad.

When you first turn it on put your ear up to the MVIX and see if you hear the hard drive start. If it don't start on initial power-up but starts on a quick power jogging then it could be the HD controller in the MVIX. But to confirm this you should try another drive if you have an old one laying around.

Hi all,

is Mvix planning a version with SATA & DVR functionality ?

can the included or external drives be NTFS or have to be Fat32.

Thx

The drive can be formatted in ntfs or fat 32.

As of yet there has been no talk of either fitting the mvix with sata or dvr functionality but you can open a ticket and request such functionality and see what happens.

(rest culled)

I have exactly the same issue with a 400GB Hitachi drive. Keen to hear if there's a workaround/fix. Have checked all connections and they're clean and correct. The system works fine with a smaller 200GB drive. Seems the system boots before the drive can properly initialise. The drive itself is fine - it works perfectly in an external USB drive bay and with IDE connection to a regular PC. This is clearly an issue with the 760.

Another irritation: the Mvix 760 can't play the WMV files I've converted from downloaded FLVs. I use Replay Converter from Applian to batch-convert FLVs to WMV. If I then recode with WMM, all is fine, but that 2-step is a real pain and not feasible for converting a large number of clips. Applian's Replay Converter produces perfectly playable (on the 760) MPEG4s. Though most of my 550GB video library (all puchased DVDs or digitised VHS tapes) is in WMV9 PAL, I have several dozen FLV-to-WMV clips that can't play on the Mvix 760. Grrrr. I'm also tired of fiddling with SUPER and such like. Can anyone recommend a a decent, powerful, flexible transcoder that also supports batch conversions - I'm prepared to pay for the right tool.

Well,
I'm in contact with the MVIX support personnel for this HDD problem. At the moment they told me to try to repartition the whole disk because the 760 works better on partition smaller than 100GB. Here is the original message:
Quote:

May I know how big your harddrive is?

If the drive is too big, we recommend
splitting it into multiple 100GB partitions.
Mvix will work better with smaller partition.

But the problem still persists. In fact, when the 760 boots up, the HDD led blinks for a while (about 0.01 secs) and I can hear the disk is yet spinning up the platters. If I perform a quick turn off/on cycle, the HDD led blinks for a longer time (about 0.5 secs) and I can hear the HDD heads movements (the 760 recognize the HDD). Does anybody know if it is possible to tell linux to wait for few seconds during the boot up process?

What the tech told you is a bunch of BS. I run a 500 gig drive with only one NTFS partition and it works fine. Did you try any of my suggestions in my previous post?

Also check the specifications on the drive. Some drives have a jumper pin that sets the startup timing which delays the startup of the drive when power is applied to it from the system.
This is common in server drives or drives used in an array. The delayed timing is used to stagger the startup of each drive to reduce voltage serge to the system. Check the jumper settings to make sure its not set to delay the startup.

Thank you for your answer. This weekend I'll check if the HDD is misconfigued... and I'll try another HDD, also.
However the MVIX support told me this:

...

If can help, my drive number is HSD72505 0KLAT80

That may very well be true. I have read a lot of threads stating that the hatachi drives have compatability problems with external devices such as the 8300HD DVR and MVIX. Your best bet is a western digital. They seem to have a very good track record as far as compatability.

Ooooooh. I like that solution much better than security = share.

I'll try that this weekend.

Edit: That works great. Not a good solution for anyone really worried about security on their samba servers, but for home use it solves the problem with the MVIX jsut fine.

All I did was add the "map to guest = Bad Password" to my existing smb.conf on my Mac server and didn't have to change anything else.

Hi again,

I'm using NDAS on my 760-hd and it really is painfully slow. A 350mb file can take 20-40 minutes to copy across which seems just ridiculous. I'm using a bt home hub.

Anyone got any suggestions for speeding it up? Anyone else using a home hub and getting better speeds?

traukostar ->

About the problem in HR xvid's, I think I have a solution. I've had the same problem with some tv shows episodes (house and prison break). Mvix 760 HD can't play those files well, and I don't understand that, because other files with same bitrate and resolution plays ok.

So I put the problem HR xvid files in GSPOT, and I see those files are encoded without packet bitstream and without OpenDML (AVI v2.0), and the HR xvid files which played well are encoded with these features (PB and OpenDML).

Then I use the MPEG4Modifier, and save the HR xvid's problematic files with "use packet bitstream" option, and in about 2 minutes the files are with PB and OpenDML, and plays ok in mvix, without anoying lags!

Please test this solution, and after post here the results!

braspunk.

PS: Sorry about my very poor english, I'm brazilian...
