Just Got The Mummy!!

Thread Starter
After reading the various reviews of The Mummy, I decided to go and get it. I just got done watching it and I must say I am VERY Impressed. Most of the reveiws I have read said it was good, but not great. To me, the transfer was GREAT!!

As far as PQ goes, I saw absolutely no artifacting, even in the dark action sequences. Also the colors really popped in the daylight desert scenes. I also noticed that the HD transfer actually enhanced the CGI effects and made them seem more real and less artificial.

There is a scene in the beginning of the film where Brandon Frasier is standing in the desert and the sand begins to move and the face of the Priest is shown. During this scene sand is flying in all directions and I kid you not, you could see individual granuals of sand. Also the way the blue sky, contrasts with the brown sand is breathtaking in many points throughout the movie. While on the subject of the blue sky, I saw absolutely no banding at all, like which is very evident in the Blu-ray version of Ice Age.

As far AQ goes, it is well done, but not a drastic improvement over the SD-DVD version. I feel they could have made better use of the Surrounds in both 5.1 and 7.1 setups and could have used more LFE's. However, the Center channel is vastly improved over the SD-DVD version and dialog is much more clear and audiable on the HD-DVD release.

All in all I would give this a 8.5 out of 10 overall and highly recommend this release for any HD Enthusiast.

For this review I used an Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-on (Which I strongly feel produces the best HD picture out there right now, HD-DVD or Blu-ray) and I used a Sony VW-50 "Pearl" on to a 110" Da-Lite High Powered Screen.

Thanks for the review. Glad to hear it looks and sounds good as I just ordered a day or 2 ago from Amazon...

After getting The Mummy, of course the first thing you did was unwrap it.

You are aware of the audio issues with the 360 add-on, right? You may want to give the audio another chance when they get the DTS decoder out.

Glad it turned out well. I'll be picking it up.

Nice review. I was hoping for a good one for this movie. I like it very much. Too bad the sequel was just a CGI festival.

It was the Pearl that made this baby shine I just bought it too. If it is anywhere near the PQ of the HDDVDs I've seen so far, it'll be worth the $.

I just watched this on my Z4. There are a few brief shots with matt painted backgrounds that look a little soft but overall an excellent transfer, way better than the SD version.

I saw this on TNT-HD a couple of months ago, although it was 16x9 and not OAR. I thought it looked very good for a TNT broadcast. This disc looks absolutely GREAT! The desert scenes are beautiful in particular - detail and depth is excellent throughout.

FYI - I also demoed American Werewolf, Dune, Superman II and Superman Returns today. Superman II is my least favorite of the lot - pretty soft looking for the most part. Some scenes were better than others, though. I was very happy with all the others. Dune is a bit soft in darker scenes but really shines in indoor scenes! All in all, a very good day for HD-DVD releases!

i think it looked (and sounded) spectacular. tier 1 for me for sure

I concur!! This is a great transfer of one of my favorite films. I cant wait for the Mummy Returns...that to me was even better. Should make a great demo piece. Picked up Dune tonight...wished it was the directors cut but at least it's out. Hopefully this one looks great too!!

I agree the movie looks and sounds great, unfortunally a couple of the wide shots that has too much CGI looks like crap. That's not the fault of the transfer though, and only shows the limitations of the special effects of some years ago.

One of my favorites.

Did they do it right and give it a TrueHD track? If not, I'll pass.

no TrueHD Ron

Anyone else notice the slight amount of edge enchancement? I've never seen this come up with any other titles so I doubt it's suddenly my setup.

I noticed MAJOR print damage, lots of vertical lines in the desert scenes, pretty sad shape for a film of its age. The dark scenes were nice but watch it again and notice TONS of print damage, I presume from the original master... When comparing this to say "THE SEARCHERS" it was abysmal!! But still a damn good time...

The Mummy wasn't shot in VistaVision...completely.

Probably grabbing this today.

I never had the sd-dvd for comparison, but I agree with your comments regarding the surrounds and lfe.

It's not your setup, I noticed it as well. There is a horrendous amount of EE in the standard version.

Yes, I remember this as well.

It's a shame cause that EE is VERY noticable on a 120" screen.

I dig this movie and seeing it on HD-DVD just makes me want the Indiana Jones trilogy on HD-DVD that much MORE!!!!
i would say this disc is hovering above borderline. on a 120" screen.

big upgrade over the "horrible" SD DVD, but not quite reaching the heights of great HD. there's a fair bit of edge enhancement in this title ... not disastrous like the SD, but it's a little disappointing to see. the ringing itself wasn't too frequent, although i have to wonder if it's presence hampered detail at all ? either way, this title could have looked better. i would still recommend this title to someone on the fence ... it's the best the film has looked on home video.

i think that if studios are going to release their back catalogue titles for full price (i.e. same as new titles) on these new formats, they should come up with a new master, to bring the quality up to speed.

fat chance of this happening, but in an ideal world ...

This is one of my fav HD DVD. The story and PQ combined with the genre of movie make it one of the more enjoyable HD experiences.
Great, I have this HD-DVD and Scorpion King coming, can't wait.
With the exception of some print damage, this title looked great on my 50 inch Sammy DLP.

I will say, the soundtrack seemed rather front loaded and lacking for an action movie that is not SO old. The dialogue, however, was very crisp. I guess I was just expecting a WHAM BANG soundtrack...

I noticed the vertical lines also. I usually don't look at things as closely as some of the people on here but I don't see how someone could miss those. Still a good movie and better than the dvd. I'm looking forward to Mummy Returns tomorrow.
