The reason for preferring Oppo 970HD to 981HD as an audio player was mentioned by Neuromancer on the DVD Player board. It has to do with the circuit board layout:

I suspect the reason for this design compromise is basically cost-cutting, in other words, at a higher price point (than current Oppo players), the designers could have used one larger circuit board and avoided the multiple "daughterboards" with connecting ribbons.
