Forgive me as I am coming to this thread late...

I have only had one problem with the BDP-S1 on a BD and that was "Into the Blue." The disc took minutes to load and I had to turn the player off and back on to get it to start. This was the first BD I played on the player, and I had never used the disc before... Several discs later I am near 100% certain I got a defective *disc* not player (too late to return it unfortunately as I bought the disc before the player months ago). All other BD discs play cleanly and quickly on my player (I use the 1080i setting via component connections for BD, BTW feeding to a 50 inch 1366 X 768 Sony LCD set).
Regular DVD playback has been another animal entirely, unfortunately. I have had freezeups on many discs. The most recent occurances were during my Horatio Hornblower marathon session. I have now watched 6 discs in the past 3 days, and the player froze on 5 of them. Each time, the player unfroze about 15 minutes later in the movie. Once I rewound to the spot of the freeze, the movies all played fine for the rest of each disc.
I have had similar instances (without the 15 minute jump) on more recent/mainstream DVD releases, but thought the brief freezes were due to layer changes I had not noticed previously on my prior DVD player (a Denon DVD-1600). Now I think it actually is due to the Sony.
In any case, for BD I am satisfied. I would say the picture is almost as good as my HD-A1, but without the video hicups on the BD material that I still get when playing some HD DVDs on the A1. Unfortunately, both the A1 *and* the Sony are not ready for prime time glitch-wise when it comes to regular DVD playback, IMO.
