Tech came to house again today. He tried something in the 4695 service menu that didn't work and then had to call in to Samsung again for assistance. Apparently there is a service bulletin out there about this problem and the solution is to upgrade the LCD's firmware. Samsung will send the new firmware to the tech and then he'll come back out to install it via USB. My firmware is 1012. You can check it by going to Settings, Function Help, Right Arrow, then press info button.

It is very annoying they didn't do this in the first place because if this works, it is an easy fix. Much better than molesting my set by opening its innards and roughly taking out and putting back in my main board 5 times.

ah ha!! just as i thought, it is firmware. let us know if it fixes it. what steps need to be taken to get a samsung tech to come out? what number do i call?
I'm in touch with Samsung and they issued a request for a tech to come out for me too. Samsung also explicitly stated there were no firmware updates yet.

The tech called and said it will take a couple of days to get a board from Samsung. I think I will push for them to do their homework before touching my TV.

Just call 800-SAMSUNG to talk to tech support and they'll transfer you to schedule a service call. They'll probably tell you to try some things that don't work first.

It does seem their first fix is to change the main board, which is odd and sounds expensive to keep doing that. A new board didn't work for me and the "field engineer" that came to my house had to talk to 3 different Samsung techs before one of them found the service bulletin, which apparently was just released. Unfortunately, the techs that the field engineers talk to are not allowed to speak directly with customers so you will have to go through the whole annoying process of waiting for a FE to come to your house, figure out he can't fix it, call Samsung, wait for them to send the firmware, and have the FE come back out to load it. Good luck!

I too am having the same exact issue. I have the samsung 4695d and samsung dvd player. Kind of annoying, as I just bought this gear yesterday.

So i think I see two solutions to this. Either get a new philips or Sony DVD player or call Samsung and maybe there will be a fix or maybe not. Does this sound correct

Has anyone had any luck with swapping for a high end cable. also, any other dvd players such as panasonic. Also, any specific info on the service bulletin would be appreciated.

I guess I can just return everything too.

I just spoke to the Samsung Sales Rep for the BB stores in Houston (her name is DeDe). I expressed my concerns about this problem and she is going to see about escalating matter since this appears to be a wide spread problem. I made her aware of this forum and she read through and now understands this problem is not isolated to just me. I will post when I hear back from her hopefully within the next day or two.

Hello all,
I found this thread while searching for the purple flicker issues with 1080i. I just purchased a Samsung S4695D 46 inch LCD version SP01. I also bought the Samsung HD860 DVD player.

The set looks great with the XBox 360 games over component at 1080p. However, I experienced the same problem with the 1080i setting on the DVD player running through HDMI straight to the LCD.

I appreciate the info that you guys have put out here about the problem. I think a may wait a couple of days before reporting to Samsung to see if that bulletin will make the appropriate rounds first. I would also rather the tech just run the firmware upgrade first rather than swapping out the motherboard.

I'll check back regularly to see what you guys find out and I will also post any info that I obtain. Thanks again!

Thanks for the update, Dino.

I think I will call their support when I get home tonight. The more people who report the issue, hopefully it will start to get some more attention.

Definately let us know what the Samsung rep says.

If you guys remember from my first post, my HD860 and monoprice HDMI cable DID work properly with a 4695 at my local BB. I went back to BB today to look at the firmware version and sure enough it is different. It is an earlier version, 1011 from July 2006. Our version, 1012 from Aug 06, must have introduced this problem.
This is good progress. So it appears firmware on the 4695 is the culprit. Will there ever be a way for us to flash the new firmware ourselves or will this always be a service call? I am trying to determine if it's worth waiting for a fix or just buying the HD960.
I returned my HD860 for the Sony DVD player. 1080i works fine.
Thanks for the info, Dino. Do you have a ticket number for your issue with Samsung? I was thinking that it might help when I call to report my problem. If we can give them your ticket number to refer to in their system, then maybe the representative can see the notes on your account as to what has already been done to solve the issue. Kind of use it as their master ticket on the issue so to speak. Maybe by reading the notes it will help the techs to understand that it is a known issue and not run the rest of us through the basic troubleshooting diagnostics. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, I understand. I do appreciate all of the info that you guys throwing out here.

I have two transaction numbers, 4001166740 and 2002734185, but I doubt it has much useful info. The notes kept by the local subcontractor probably has more accurate info but Samsung can't see that so I'm told.

When my firmware is updated I will get more info on what version it is and also what number the service bulletin is.
My ticket is 2002740204. I think this is useless though because the ticket shows my board needs replacement. I have been working around the normal channels with the BB & Samsung liason for my area. I'm doing this because no one at the Samsung Tech line and the repair shop are listening. I have forwarded Jeff's ticket and his comment about the firmware version to DeDe and she has sent to Samsung technical folks. Hopefully this will expedite, but hard to say because of the holidays.

Hello all,
I just confirmed Jeff's findings at my local BestBuy. The TV there at BB has firmware version 1011 where my DVD player worked fine at 1080i. My TV has version 1012. I have attached a picture of the version from both TVs. As you can seen on mine (ver 1012), there is a pink hue from the flicker. I will make sure Samsung sees this post.

How do I look up what firmware I have?? I am thinking of getting the 860 since not sure the 960 is worth the extra cost. I want to be sure I won't have this problem.

TIA

Thanks, Dino. I just checked my firmware and it's 1012, also.

mrslloyd,
jeffng65 posted how to find the firmware version several posts up on this page (thanks jeff). Here are the steps:

1. Click "Menu" button on your remote
2. Choose "Setup"
3. Arrow down to the bottom and select "Function Help"
4. Click your "right" arrow button and you will get a display that reads "On" and "Off".
5. At this screen, click on your "Info" button on your remote and then you should see the info at the top of the screen.

Cooleddie,

Thanks. I ended up getting it, figured I would return if I had the issue and I did. I ordered the 960 from circuit City and hope to get it soon. I should get it before my return date is up and I will just switch them out.
mrslloyd, are you returning your tv, or just the dvd player? I have the flicker problem as well, not sure if I should return the television or try to fix it.
Problem seems to be just with the Samsung 4695D running 1012 firmware (mine is running this too) and the HD860. Purple flicker when HD860 DVD player is in 1080i mode. I've found no other issues with the TV so I wouldn't return it. I'm hoping for Samsung to identify the issue (with the help of those who have already reported it) so I can keep the HD860. Otherwise I'll return the DVD player -- never the TV.
Well, to introduce another variable in all this, I have a Samsung DVD-R145 and I get the flicker/flashing screen on 1080i upconversion on HDMI AND Component inputs.

I'll have to check into the firmware version tonight....

Thanks for all the information so far!
I took back the hd860, and traded for the sony NS75H. No flashing!! The samsung dvd player is a piece of junk. Even without the flashing, the pq was horrible.
the sony was the same price, almost, and the pq was alot better.
I plan on returning the DVD player. I don't think my husband would let me return the TV. He's in love at this point.
Ok I was about to go be stupid and buy one of those crazy cables tomorrow to see if that was the issue causing my purple flicker, I have two HDMI cables that I tried on both of my tv's inputs, they both work fine with my HD cable box at 1080i but every time I try the 1080i with the LG 191 player I get that nasty purple flicker.

I also have the 1012 revision firmware on my samsung 4095 panel.

I'm really glad I came across this thread, it was bad enough I had to drive back to BB once tonight to swap the player out only to find the new one doing the same thing. I feel kinda bad for places like best buy that will take the losses on those items because of bad firmware on samsungs part.
