PT-AX100 problem? - Page 26

yes hdmi

I already called the Panasonic service - because of my projector has more than 3 years its no longer on the guarantee and and I have to pay
I live in Poland. How does it look in Your country? Do you have to pay for an update when its out of guarantee ?
Unfortunately yes, you'd have to pay for them to update the firmware if it's out of warranty. I think Heartland, the US repair facility, charges $135 + shipping.

Well, I tried the fix by lubing up the upper and lower parts of the Iris and it seems to have done the trick. Not sure how long it will last but it's working as of now. I only have 78 hours on my machine and have already had this problem repaired by Heartland back in 2008. I only use this machine for my backyard theater hence the low hour number. The first repair was done for free as it was under warranty...this time...not so lucky so I decided to give the repair a go. So far so good. I just want to thank all of you who take the time to share these "remedies" with the rest of us...it's what makes this place the wonderful resource it is...Bravo!

Thanks TigerRay and peas_n_carrots. Replaced the iris using the part from PartStore, got everything back together, projector comes on (didn't break it) and stays on, but I still get the red Iris OK. Hopefully I'll get another 2 years out of it. Dec 2006 build date, 1286 hours on the bulb.

Just a note about my machine. It used to make grinding noises when it was turned on. Sometimes required a restart, and even then it would balk. But everything always seemed to turn out fine. Now it just starts and runs. Self-lubrication I guess. Just installed our third lamp. We use it as our regular TV, and my SO often goes to sleep on the sofa with it on. Each lamp has lasted well over 3000 hours. The lamps don't actually die, they just get dim. Apparently there are now sources for the lamp other than "Made by Panasonic". Saved some bucks that way, but I didn't get a new filter in the box. So sad.

I now have huge amounts of flicker: variations in the light level random every fraction of a second, few seconds, or minutes. I have 1.09 firmware so it is not solved by an update to 1.08 firmware as talked about in this thread. I did the lubrication fix on the shutter a year ago and thought that might need a booster shot. I had no error message on self test (power, left, up, down, up, down, enter). I was happy to see the shutter still free a year later although not that many hours as I only have 900 total. I gave it a booster dab of Super Lube but I still have the filcker. I have turned off dynamic iris, light harminizer, and lamp power is normal.

Does anyone have a solution to this flicker problem?

I also added an RFI filter on the input power line as suggested. Nothing helps.

My projector turns off after about a minute and won't turn back on.

I think you will find that the WD-40 only works for a few weeks. When you have to do it again use a spray can of Super-Lube. Use the same procedure with the quetip. Use the regular Super Lube and not the dry film version.

I tried all kinds of spray lubricant and the problem kept occuring every week. So i finally decided to solder a piece of metal wire at the point where the iris was getting stuck. So now IRIS opens about halfway and then closes. It was getting stuck at full open position when looking at it with the top cover open. It's been almost 6 months since i did that and no problems so far. I did turn the IRIS off though once i did the above fix. Projector still checks the IRIS when i turn it on and then it runs fine.

One thing I noticed was that if I went into the service menu "self-check" immediately after I turned the unit on, the IRIS said OK but it was in red. Not sure if that means anything. Also, I had been running my unit almost always in normal mode, and about a week ago started using cinema1. Anyone think this could be related?

Thanks,

If any of the OK's are in RED it means that that is what shut the unit down the last time it shut down. So this would indicate it is your IRIS shutting the unit down. If the Lamp OK was in RED then it would be your Lamp.

The flicker does in fact go away eventually. Just leave it on over the weekend and wait until it goes away.

Cheers to Jeff Vegas and TigerRay for posting the original pics/instructions. I performed the Iris replacement surgery yesterday and my venerable Panny is runny like a champ again. I was doing the multiple plug in/unplug method of getting by with the stuck iris (even after applying the Super Lube trick a few times...finally it just didn't want to work any more.) I finally bit the bullet and ordered the new iris part#TENC0169 ($111 shipped from partstore.com.)

ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS from TigerRay are at post #694, page 24 of this thread.

The key is keeping things very organized and moving very slowly as you disassemble the unit. Literally needed one magnetized screwdriver with a nice sharp point and a bit of patience. Take your own cell phone pics as you go so you can remember a few little things like what screws go where, etc. After doing this though, she runs like a champ and the iris alert is OK in white! Can't say enough thanks to the guys who had the guts to try this first. I've posted my pics here too just for the record in case they help someone else.

I cleaned the shaft iris and works perfectly. but now the image is predominantly red. The background is all red. What should I do to restore the previous settings?
I hope someone help me!
Thanks in advance, Arpi.

Thanks to everyone's suggestions. First I tried applying WD-40, but that only lasted a couple of weeks. I found this thread and read it almost entirely top to bottom. That took me over two months. In that time I called Panasonic and setup an out-of-warranty call. They quoted $150 just to look at it, plus parts and labor, so I decided not to send it in. While researching this issue I simply used a power switch dedicated to this projector, and would just power it off for the required 3-4 times until it stayed on (sometimes as much as 9 times).

I liked the hacks that involved forcing the iris open and other lubricant, but I finally decided to try replacing the iris. I ordered it from partstore.com part# TENC0169 as mentioned here. It was $91 + shipping. I was very careful, using small dixie cups to put screws in and labeling them with a marker where they want. I took pictures at every major step before removing anything. The iris went in smoothly and everything went back together just fine. I did have to refer to my pictures a couple of times. The entire process took about 2 hours.

For background, I'm a very curious person, no college degree, but I've been toying and hacking with electronics and computers nearly my whole life. I would say anybody with patience can do this. Just do not force anything and make sure you have a clean area to work with.

It has been a couple of weeks and it turns on the first time each time now and runs great! The Self-check shows white OK for iris where previously it was red.

Next I need to see if I can apply the firmware somehow. For the record, here are the versions of mine:

mm: 1.08 f: 1.00 im: 1.03

Thanks again to TigerRay and Choppertown for pictures, peas_n_carrots for confirming the part #, and everyone else for your time and postings, and anyone I failed to give credit to.

Great , can you post those photos if you still have them
post #770 of 790
Well here's an old thread. Tonight I attempted to replace the iris myself. Everything came apart fine, went back together fine, but the unit wouldn't power on. I took it all apart again, inspected all my pictures, checked every screw, and went back to work. In the process, I foolishly lifted the unit to retrieve an old screw. One of the LCD panels, the green one, fell out. It fell maybe six inches. Not panicking yet, I reassembled everything to try one more time. I put the cover on this time, and for whatever reason it works. Turns on. Only problem is that, like arpi69 here, the image is now red and not blue. I haven't tried any inputs or video on it; I just got disgusted with myself and decided to come here and see if there is any advice or help or anything. Did I ruin the green panel? Should I take it out and put it back in? I realize this is an old thread on an old machine, but surely this can't be the only place where this dilemma has been discussed, right? Any help would be awesome. I will pay for it. Thanks.

I went back into the projector for one last time just now. Looked at the panels, readjusted the one that fell, and started it up again. Half the screen was blue, the other (top) was black. This image faded into the menu screen for the test DVD, all orange and yellow. The blue faded out into the corners. What does it mean that there was blue and then it faded away? Perhaps, also, I am not referring to panels but something else? It's what I think is the optical block, three panels connected to the cables that hook into the top board. It's the green one. How screwed am I?
If you've made sure everything is plugged in correctly (and didn't forget to plug maybe another plug somewhere in) and you have to order a new lcd panel, you might want to consider this low cost Chinese company:

http://www.aliexpress.com/store/3115...rojectors.html

I ordered a part for another projector that was supposedly not manufactured any longer (Infocus X1 color wheel) from this company with success. Their prices must be wholesale because they are so much cheaper than partstore.

I had to verify the part number for them to make sure they sent the correct one because the shipping was about $28.

I'm not sure the LCD panel is what you are referring to, but you can send them the numbers on the cable for the part to make sure it's the exact same number as your's and also ask them to send pictures of the part to compare before they complete the transaction. (See attached picture)

Yeah, that's it. Thanks for the links. Does that sound like what happened? I honestly have no idea how I should proceed. I'm beginning to assume I'm screwed. I have no way of knowing if I broke a panel or if some wire is out somewhere. Pretty frustrating.
I never took the LCD panels out, so I don't know what they look like. All you can do is visually inspect it for damage. Also, you can re-plug in all the cables you can find just in case one didn't connect well. Other than replacing parts, those are the only things I can think of doing.

When I was repairing mine, I had to take the mainboard out a second time for something and I forgot to unplug the LCD ribbon cables. I was pulling up on the mainboard looking for what was holding it down and I severely bent the green LCD ribbon cable on the edge. I thought I had ruined it. Luckily it still worked. So it's apparently not hard to damage these parts.

As for finding out if the LCD panel is bad, the LCD panels emit a bright light, so you can see if all the lcd panels are lighting up like they should. I don't remember what safety switches there are that might detect if the cover is on or not, so you'd have to look for a limit switch that is pressed on when the main cover is on or the lamp cover is on and wedge something in to keep it pressed so the projector will power up with the cover removed so you can see the LCD lights.
That sounds like a good idea. I'll try it out when I get home. Really just very frustrating... such a stupid thing to do. I just got impatient at the finish line. I will try that... but I don't hold out much hope. Even replacing the panel will run what, couple hundred? I already spent about a hundred on the new iris (which I will promptly return), and I could buy a new 100U on eBay for that amount of money. Just have my head in my hands here.

Do you think I should keep trying to fix it, or just buy another one? I'm fine with older models and don't need more than 720p. What are some models I should look for online? Another of the same?
I'm no expert on projectors and which ones to get. You'll have to rely on google for that. If you're gonna get another 100u I'd keep that Iris. If they are that cheap online it's probably because they have the iris problem. Heck, a new bulb is $350 unless you go for one of those cheap knockoffs that don't come near the same picture quality. This is an expensive hobby to have, but the 100u is an excellent 720p projector for the money when it's running properly.
That's kinda what I'm thinking, yeah.
Anybody have any thoughts as to why HDMI on my 4 year old ax100u only works when being output by my onkyo receiver? If I direct connect something, there is no picture. I have tried multiple sources, andf multiple cables, but it only likes whatever it is that the onkyo is doing.
I'm on my second bulb in my AX100. I made the mistake of buying a cheap bulb, not doing my normal research before purchasing. I noticed the difference as soon as I put the bulb in, but decided to live with it.

That was 1200+ hours ago and now I'm starting to see flicker (brightness to darkness to brightness) while watching all sources on the projector. The flicker is most notable in Normal lamp mode, but I still see it in Eco mode too.

What's everyone's opinion, is the flicker due to the bulb going or is there something wrong with the projector?
