YDL is dead to me!

May be they will provide the support through a patch later?

BTW, last time I check... wired Ethernet (esp Giganet) is still faster and more reliable than any WiFi standards.

In support of the YDL guys, wireless on Linux has been one of those things that has been spotty for quite sometime. If the chipset is not one of the ones already supported in linux (atheros and about 2 or 3 others), then it's going to be tough to get the wireless working.

Terrasoft has access to the sony engineers. It's not rocket science to write a wireless driver, but the linux wireless drivers are traditionally spotty because they don't have the appropriate documentation for every manufacturer's chipset/card. Terrasoft has sony's help with this, and should have the necessary information. On their website they have stated that they are working with sony to get it working, I'm surprised that they hadn't already. Why does everything about the PS3 seem rushed and incomplete?

What kills me is the lack of an IR receiver and sixaxis support. Do they really expect me to use it as an HTPC with a mouse and keyboard?

It must be frustrating if you NEED wireless.

I gave up on wireless a few months ago and ran cables in the house. I had found 802.11g useless for HD playback, even DVD playback would stutter at times. Whereas a wired connection works great and its easy to upgrade to even 1000mb/s.

I know everyone can't ditch wireless but if you can its worth the effort.

Cysquatch thanks for the post! Now I don't have to fool with downloading YDL just yet. I'm like you. . . no way am I going wired. I bought a 60gb for a reason and the WiFi was a BIG reason for me. It's wireless or nothing at all. Like you, I'd have to run 50' of cable. NFW, baby, NFW!

can u guys expand on why you can't do wired? I was able to run 100' of CAT5 to my basement from the 2nd floor which connects to another switch for more ports. Just poke a hole in the ceiling where your stairs are, run a hangar through, and your golden. Well, bad description but I swear it's easier than you think.

Echoing Jack, I know not everyone can be wired but just throwing out an option.

After being totally disgusted with wireless performance, no matter what I tried, it basically was poop in my 2 story house, I went the wired route. There is no way I will ever even try wireless again. Running CAT5e and putting plugs on the ends afterwards is not as hard as one would think.

And to look at it another way, going wired is like upgrading your PS3. And if you can't summon up the skill or just don't want to do it, it probably wouldn't cost that much to have 1 network cable run to where all your systems are. It would be prudent anyways!

All YD has to do is write a one stupid set of drivers...how hard can that be.....

Apparently as hard as supporting 480i/p or 1080i tv's without a huge process.

YDL was not ready for release and I hope they fix these two issues soon as I wont be using it either until they are fixed.

Of course if it did have an ethernet port, you could set up a wireless bridge just for YDL, which of course won't be a problem for YDL because it will just think it has a direct connection.

Yes it has an ethernet port but I dont want to run wires...I have wireless n and it seems work very reliably for me anyway.

How do you set up an ethernet bridge as I am not familiar with this....guessing its something you plug into the ethernet port and then communicates with the wireless router?

You could also add a USB WiFi thumb adapter as a solution.

Or wait for YD to get off their asses and support PS3 wireless

actually, both are very big issues that will not be fixed easily. Linux is missing many drivers for wireless devices (as is Windows 64bit).

Precisely. I just picked one up for my 20gb PS3. A small device connects via ethernet to your PS3. This type of device should allow you to have YDL linux access the internet wirelessly, and it won't even "know" it is a wireless connection.

As I mentioned in another thread I'm quite disappointed that more things don't work right off the install. No wireless, and no media player. Is this just the Linux world and I was expecting too much? I've never run Linux in my home so I'm not sure how it usually works. Regardless, given that all PS3's share the same hardware I think it's reasonable to expect a certain level of functionality right on install.

Yes, you just connect your PS3 to the 'bridge' via a Ethernet cable... however, it will make getting the 60GB a pointless exercise

Another point in the "20gb version is better" camp

The current list:

1.) HDD is easily upgradeable, so why get 60gb?
2.) Memory card reader?? Those go for $5-10, with more slots, and easily connects to PS3 with USB (many now are also combo card readers/USB 2.0 HUBS)
3.) To go wireless on 20gb, you need an ethernet bridge, but this is the only way to go wireless with YDL.
4.) Who cares about the "chrome finish."

The problem is that Marvell may not have released enough specs to permit an open source driver. Remember that Terasoft did not write Linux, though they may have submitted patches to it. All they are doing is packaging up what others have written and distributing it for use on PowerPC / PS3.

As such, the only rights they have to distribute the kernel come from the GPL. They are thereby unable to incorporate a closed source kernel module with the kernel without running afoul of the GPL.

Thus, unless and until someone can lean on Marvell to release the details of their chip's calling conventions to the world at large, Terasoft is stuck. They certainly can't enter into a meaningful NDA when they are obligated to release the full source for any driver they would produce.

Comes down to preferences and I would rather have it all built in with wireless.

Modules can be proprietary and distributed as binary only. They don't have to be incorporated into the kernel source (because they're modules). It's not a problem.

WHY???? does my internet keep disconnecting and connecting. I can't even get through the whole sign up for the playstation network. I am hooked up wireless but for some reason it keeps disconnecting and then reconnecting. What is YDL
