Question on more $$ or not for the PS3

New poster, long time reader, I happen to be one of those that got the Best buy speel... this hdtv your getting will play PS3 in 1080p when it comes out!! But... nope. I got the XBR1 50", now don't get wrong, beautiful picture, great set. But no 1080p inputs... I was so bummed i have been working with Sony to get a replacement, as it was semi-falsely advertised.

My wife has found it in her kind heart to allow me, however, to purchase a new A2000 60", or looking at sammy's 61" 1080P (both about the same price at CC).. but my real question after reading here a-bit, (and yes the PS3 looks Great on this set) Should i plunk down the dough for the 1080p capabilities?? I was just so bummed about the whole .. well its a 1080p set..but..well..it doesn't accept 1080p siginals... That I have almost convinced myself I NEED the 1080p...

questions are: Should I? - Would you?
And will the picture quality make a big enough difference?

Any good advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The particular TV you have (I have the same one) has excellent processing capabilities. Also your TV is a 1080P display, it just doesnt accept a 1080p signal. In other words, unlike a lot of other displays that accept a 1080i signal, your TV actually deinterlaces it to 1080 lines. What can you take from all that? Well there are a lot of opinions on the subject. You can find them in the TV forums, but the takehome message is that your TV will display a 1080 signal, that has been properly interlaced to 1080i (as i as assume the PS3 does) about as well as a progressive input. Some would argue just as well. Even the biggest hippocrites would arge only slightly worse, especially on a 50" screen.

Additionally, you have a quality XBR display, I wouldn't trade that in for the lesser A2000 series. I would trade it in for an XBR2, but you are paying a lot more for that. I wouldn't argue against a tradein for the sammy, but my personal viewing preference is LCOS technology, so I would stick w/ the XBR1 if I were you.

That explains a little more, thank you. I was really wondering, and no one could really give me a good answer, does this XBR1 really show 1080p... or is it 1080i while playing PS3/whatching BR.

But the biggest thing is really if i'll be getting a "better to perfect" picture with a newer set with 1080p inputs. (guess the A2000 is really a jump down although its 1080p) But the Sammy DLP 61 1080p would be a good bet? The thing with the trading is ... Sony, and what they would even do, (as currently it's at the "wite a letter to the committee, and the committee decides) As, from what I understand alot of people, acording to Sony, "are in the same boat as me" so this issue has been raised to a committee issue.

So today/tommorow I can buy a new HDTV that is "true 1080p" or wait for Sony to make a decison, or purchase the A2000, although not better (Cheep at CC) and 1080p, while waiting for 1.3 HDTV capabilities... (If they will be semi-afforadable...) Or buy the sammy (although DLP.. not LCOS...which I've heard mixed reviews).. So i'm still a bit lost...please help. =P

Seating distance and screen size will make more of a difference than 1080i or 1080p. You've been swallowed up in what amounts to a big ball of hype. Chances are, even if you saw it, you'd have a hard time distinguishing between 1080i and 1080p. You've got a great display, enjoy it, don't second guess yourself insane.

I would definately return it/exchange it or whatever they will allow you to do. Not able to accept a 1080p signal is going to be very limiting over the next couple years.

I would recommend the Samsung HLS over the XBR2, I think it has more vivid color's (personal opinion). I've got the Samsung 56HLS88W.

So general consus is return the XBR1 or trade it if possible, or go with the Sammy 57W? The wife is pointing me tward the door ready to go purchase the set... (as she wants to get all the moving/setting up done early if we do get it...?

Were heading out rather soon, if there are any last minute suggestions on HDTV's other than the Sammy HLS6187W, give me suggestions =PP

I'm still stuck on the mitsub model and A2000, CC doesn't have the SXRD2 in stock... so its DLP or A2000. leaning at sammy's for the 360 1080p comp support, and PS3 1080p picture. please, any last minute responses are greatly appreciated!!!

To answer your first question, there is no such things as displaying a 1080i image. There is no such thing as a 1080i image, only a 1080i signal. Your display will either deinterlace it to 1080 lines to display or deinterlace it to 720p lines to display. Since you have, or had, a 1920 by 1080 display yours would deinterlace it to 1080 lines. Thats the answer you your question.

Personally, I wouldnt go for the Sammy (obviously because I didn't), but it is really a personal preference. One issue for me is that I see rainbows, which DLPs have, and some people don't.

What "limitation" does he have. To me, the only reasonable use for 1080p over 1080i is for HTPC. Like another poster said, too many people buy into the hype. Personally, I'd rather have an XBR2, because for one thing it has a better processor than the XBR1, but progressive input wouldn't have a lot to do w/ my decision.

Thought I might update you guys, or anyone one else who owns a XBR1... Sony is now "returning for trade-in" your XBR1's for the (semi false advertising..at places like Best buy etc.)

I had to write a letter to Sony's board of direction for this perticular issue, and after about a 2 month wait time... Sony called back and I have been offered my choice of HDTV's... $500 for the 60" A2000, $1,200.00 for the 60 "XBR2 (I had a 50" XBR1 btw...) I had the XBR1 for about 6/7 months, so not a bad trade-in value, if anyone is interested, call Sony and get the address for the board addressing this issue. (My issue is that I bought the 50 XBR1 when first released, and Best Buy's product info from Sony listed the XBR1 as a full 1080p HDTV that could recieve 1080p siginals....

So Props to Sony in this case,hope this might inform someone =P

you have to consider that you are buying something for the future, so while it might not matter right now, what about 3 years from now?

some people have already stated similar things, but I will say again because there is still some confusion.

There is no difference between the end result of a 1080i versus a 1080p signal that is output at 1080p. This has been verified by many respected sites. The xbr1 outputs every signal you send to it in 1080p and it has one of the best deinterlacers out there, so there will be no perceivable difference.

You simply send 1080i signals to the xbr1 and you will see the same image as someone with the A2 that is sending his tv a 1080p signal. It is not limiting at all.

The only reason to return an xbr1 is the green blob effect. I returned mine because of the screen shimmer effect though.

True, But I do notice a difference in slight quality in the PS3 blu ray movies with the 1080p hdmi vs. having it hooked up to the XBR1 1080i... could be ... the xbr1 is older (6/7 months) or that the A2000 is 60' vs the xbr1 I have which is 50'.

The A2000 seems like a slightly better picture, although I have read a few reports that the xbr1's quality is better than the A2000... maybe I should up for the XBR2, but Sony stated that (besides the nifty extras) 3 hdmi, pip, cable card... the picture quality in the A2000 and XBR2 are identical... ? Suggestions or would you say keep the xbr1 and save the 500/1200for future HDTV's?

I would go for the XBR2 because of the better processing chips inside but thats just me.

Well actually I went with a Samsung HLS 88 model and have never looked back The thought has neva even crossed my mind. I feel like I cam looking out of a window. Although I did some calibration in the service menu to acquire the PQ that I currently have.

tough question,

I went with the xbr1 bc it was cheaper and thought that it should be better bc it is the xbr line but I don't think there is much difference that you could actually see. But if you can get a 60" for not much more........hmmmm, I would probably do it.

btw, for better pq, a 50" screen should look better than a 60" screen at the same res. (1080p). But a bigger screen sometimes allows you to take advantage of the extra res. and actually be able to see all of the detail that 1080p has. So it is a give and take. but if you can have high res and lg screen then go for it. However, keep in mind that all sources that are low res will look worse on that big screen of course.

Ya its a tuff call.

Because I wanted the 1080p (while waiting for sonys reply...) I went ahead and purchased a new HDTV, expecting to get the sammy DLP... But went with the Mitsubishi DLP 6 wheel. I really loved it, Great picture in 1080p from ant bully on blu ray, but I found I am a rainbow effect person. And honestly, had I not been visiting here to even know what to look for, I may have never had noticed them Soooo i returned it for the 60 A2000, which had a much nicer SD look. And great 1080p, seemed like the mitsu was a bit "brighter" though...

So finding out that Sony did in fact reply, and was going to trade in my XBR1, for a choice of Sony HDTV's.... wow. I almost thought about the bravia (sp?) but having two 60' A2000's in the home would work too.

Question on the XBR2 chips, a few websites, and the sony rep say the a2000 and xbr2 are identical pictures... do you guys think there is more quality in the (picture) not add ons, but picture between the two?
