Is anyone here playing Resistance with the full LPCM 7.1 channels?

I am. I have my PS3 hooked up to my Pioneer Elite VSX82 and am showing 7.1 channels of audio coming in.

Honestly, I hear more sound coming from Gears of War for the 360 out of the back channels. Don't get me wrong, it still sounds awesome, but GoW has a better sound track.

The dashboard or whatever the PS3 calls it, is also in 7.1 channels.

I just watched the interview for Lair. If what the developer says is true, all this downplaying of the PS3 and hyping the 360 over the PS3 is BS. Why would he say only the PS3 is capable of doing some things that the developers are doing with Lair that Wii and 360 can't?

That would be very interesting. I hope they get it right. That would sound awesome.

As to GoW, you would be amazed at how it sounds. It actually makes everything sound rather dull. I hope more games start incorporating more immersive and dynamic sound tracks.

I'm just using 2.1 right now, but the soud quality (Aside from preference of actual soundtrack) IMO is clearer than Gears of War (Which sounds great). Same with the Motorstorm demo, the sq quality is just clearer. Similar to how 96 or 88.2 khz sounds richer than 44.1khz

I agree that is sounds cleaner than GoW, but honestly speaking, when you get the extra 5 channels hooked up, they are hardly used at all. This is what I'm complaining about. GoW made much more use of the surround speakers.

I've got 7.1 (actually 7.2 if you wanna get technical, lol) and it's through a budget HDMI switching JVC receiver. The game sounds great, if you have the system properly adjusted and balanced to your seating position you can very obviously hear different sounds coming from each speaker which I think is very cool, I know that's not the technical explanation you were looking for.

Overall the audio on the PS3 games and movies has much more clarity than on my 360, I love it.

I wasn't doubting you at all. I'm certainly not knocking Gears either as it is great game with sweet audio with great vocals from the locust and a kick arse musical score. I'm just very impressed as to how rich the AQ sound is from the PS3.

I sold my 6.1 receiver as I'm looking to upgrade to an HDMI capable unit. I'll still only do 5.1 or 6.1 though. 7.1 is overkill for my apartment.

You wanna talk about overkill? You should see my dorm room here on base. We've got pretty small rooms, about 150sqft. I've got a projector with 115" screen, 7.2 surround, computer desk with dual 20" monitors, etc, I've still got a little bit of room to move around and have people over, but it's slightly cramped.

My best friend thinks my 60A2000 is overkill for my 1 bedroom apartment, of course he doesn't mind watching blu-ray movies at my place

Panasonic AE900 projector (being replaced next month by the Mistubishi HC5000 1080p projector) projected onto a painted white wall.
JVC RX-D412 Receiver (on sale, very cheap, HDMI switching, 7.1, sound quality is excellent IMO)
Mix and match speakers which is the only thing I'm really dissapointed with right now. Polk Audio Center and fronts, Klipsch Quintet surrounds, Kenwood powered 10", and Acoustic Research 10" powered sub.

Nothing truly top-dollar, but I like the bang for the buck. I am satisfied with 75% of the performance for 25% of the price of the top dollar stuff.

I was running 5.1 with all energy gear. C-5's, C-3's, 12" sub, etc. But I've moved and I'm redoing gear and sold all but my C-3's which I now use for my PC for music in the bedroom and PC software.

I've used my PS3, xbox360 with my C-3's in my family room to try out paired with a 2 channel denon. Also at my friends place with his 170x5 denon and C-8's which sound incredible.

Very nice setup, I've always liked Energy stuff, just never had the pleasure of owning any of their products.

I've debated upgrading speakers or upgrading my projector for the last few months. But the bottom line is, I can't get big speakers shipped here without going international FedEx or something which will cost an arm and a leg. If/when I get back to the US, or at least a more civilized country, I will pick up some nicer speakers. I think for now I will go with all Polk Audio speakers because I've really grown to like their sound, the Klipsch speakers are just too bright for my tastes, the Polks have a warmer sound.

I agree, it's the horn tweets in the Klipsch that seem to be a bit bright for some kinds of music and effects, some times it makes some things sound better as well. I do like Polk's all around smoother sound as well.

Yeah, it helped that I used to work at "the good guys" and they carried Energy. Even after though I had connections. Dam Comp USA for buying them and turning their AV section into crap as well as closing tons of the stores. I was hoping to upgrade to the Reference Connoisseur's or Veritas for half of MSRP, full price = forget about it.

Are you saying that the JVC you have can actually do LPCM 7.1 sound via HDMI? I didn't know that JVC had any receivers that could do that.

Silly question... have you run MCACC calibration on the Pio yet? I have a 74txvi... the rears were much too low prior to calibration. As many people have said over in the avr section, pioneer's mcacc is really, really accurate on a per room basis. It made a huge difference in my setup.

I am running in PCM 7.1 also, but I only have a 5.1 setup. Mirage Omni 50's on the corners, Mirage Omni-CC for the center, Mirage S10 sub

First thing when I bought the system.

I fine tuned every speaker until all where outputting 75db across the board at reference.

Again, I still feel that GoW sounds much better with DD 5.1

On my system, while I like the actual sound effects better for how the bad guys(locust talk) in Gears more. The Surround usage is more aggressive in Gears as well.

The actual musical score sound quality and sound effects are definitely richer sounding on Resistance. The same CD downloaded to both systems, the PS3 version definitely sounds better as well. Speakers are ENERGY Reference Connoisseur RC-30's, but was true with using older Energy C-3's (now my rear's) and C-5's (sold, ex front speakers).

Now wait of minute, are these receivers you guys are using actually accepting LPCM 7.1, or is sound just going out through every speaker you have?

There are very few receivers out there that properly do LPCM 7.1.
My friend has a 7.1 setup, but I know it's not REAL LPCM 7.1.

Sorry, I just want to make sure we know there's a difference between 7.1 and real LPCM 7.1 outputting as intended.

Yes the 82 does Multi-channel PCM audio. 7.1 channels actually lights up on my receiver.

Pioneer Elites support it properly.


I will hopefully have a 360 soon... looking forward to trying it myself. I would have had one earlier, but the HDMI revision rumors spooked me. Still are, honestly.

Do A/V receivers apply PLIIx or any other processing to a 5.1 or 6.1 LPCM track?

I have a 7.1 system and if I use optical out my receiver will process any signal to include all 7 speakers, but I am unsure if the same thing happens with a LPCM track.

My 82 will apply PLXII to LPCM audio or any other DSP for that matter.

I'm torn between PLXII + MV and THX Select2 Cinema.

Unfortunately, most don't. I was almost going to upgrade to the Panasonic SA-XR700 till I found out that if a Blu Ray disk has a 5.1 PCM audio track (which alot of them do), you can't layer PLIIx on top of that. For me, that's a deal breaker. I have a 7.1 setup, and I don't want two of my surround speakers to be unused. The thing that sucks about it, is that it's going to be a long time before I find a receiver that can layer PLIIx over 5.1 lossless sources, as well as do native 7.1 lossless and still be within my budget. Under $600 out the door.
