I thought perhaps my experience with the A2 may be of interest to someone who experiences the same problem l had. I unplugged my A2 from the wall (even though l have a surge protector) because we were experiencing a severe electrical storm. Whwn l plugged it back in..the next day, l could not get a picture. After trying to get it to work for about a week, l plugged in a SVHS cable and l immediately got a picture..lt seem that when it was unplugged, it defaulted to 480 lines, and because l had an HDMI cable plugged in, it gave me an error message..I went into the menu and changed to 1080i and HDMI and my picture with the HDMI cable came back...the question l have is..why would it change to 480 when unplugged???? anyway if anyone has the same issue..this is how l fixed it.

I got a surprise in the mail today from Toshiba even though I have been on their past update mailing list. They sent me the update disc for version 3.0. I didn't even think that version 3.0 existed. I recently checked their website and it wasn't posted. Anyway, here is the following info on the disc: Update disc 3.0 for the HD-A2/HD-A2W/HD-A2C/HD-D2; PART #HDA23003;

Toshiba customer support: 1-800-319-6684;

I don't have any idea what this fixes, but no problem with loading the update.

Me too-what does it fix? My A2 has been pretty much perfect although it doesn't get alot of use lately. Anyone know what 3.0 offers?

My D2 still gets plenty of use and it's still running 2.0. It has never failed me in a year and a half.

I hope it works better than it did for the A35 - i haven't upgraded since so many people have reported problems watching discs after updating to 3.0. i have 2 of the HD-A2's and one HD-A35 and i'm not updating any of them. the only benefit i've heard is faster loading times for the players that don't have any problems. good luck!

Hello,

Have a A2 that is running 3.0 which is horrible. Stay away from firmware 3.0 on both A2 and A3 as SD DVD freezes after 5 minutes of playback. FF and it freezes too.

HD DVD discs are no problem, but I'm enjoying upconverting SD most of the time, so actually this is a big problem.

Even called toshiba support to put in a request for a update beyond 3.0 but we'll see...

I understand that this all started with 2.8.
I had been running 2.7 since beginning of the year with no problems.


Do not see any ISO download or instructions on how to downgrade from 3.0.

Tried using the ones to downgrade from 2.8 to 2.5 etc. but do not work.

I did get one of my other A2 that was on 1.3 to 2.501 directly and region free now works, except for the RCE block hassle each time.

^ I'd love to know about this too. I bought a Philips 5982 just so I could play all my region 3 DVDs. I'd love to be able to play them on my A2 instead.

just got my 3.0 update disc. guess i will wait awhile before loading given the problems some are reporting. my a2 is now used primarily for upconverting sd dvds since there is a severe shortage of new hd dvd releases.

i'm currently updated to 2.5 and i will stay there until bug free 3.0 updates are reported here.

gotta hand it to toshiba, they're still supporting their very dead format

If you install firmware and have problems out of the player afterwards, is there a way to roll it back? Just wondering. I've had mine a few weeks, but haven't done any firmware updates yet.

Update: Found how to convert decimal to hex in windows calculator.

3004 = 0BBC for going from 3.0 to 2.7 following the instructions in the above link/post.

Hmmmm, I wonder if that was my problem with my A2 that I just sent to Toshiba.......it started freezing about 5 minutes into a movie(sd only). I posted here, tryed a few suggested things, and then called Toshiba, and they told me to send it back, and they would send me a new one. Sounds like it may have been just a buggy update all along. So, am I correct in assuming that if they send a brand new one, it would be wise to not upgrade it beyond 2.7, if it isn't already?

Curious what people think of between the A2 and XA2...I recently acquired the XA2 largely on the basis of the reviews but my initial impressions are that I can't tell much of a difference (1 day only).

I have a 720p plasma so I wasn't going to get 1080p output anyway with the XA2 but I heard the output on SD would be noticeably better...Just not seeing it yet.

Thoughts?

It may be the limitations of your display that you don't notice the difference. I have an A2 and A35 and do believe the A35 is sharper on SD movies. But I also have a 1080p SXRD TV. its not a huge difference though.

If you don't feel you need the XA2 I'm sure you'd have no problem unloading it.

You also need to calibrate the player/display useing the Reon picture settings inside the XA2.

Is there a 4.0 firmware for the A2 now ? Did anybody upgrade yet n what is the advantage ?

Also, can somebody here show me the thread to turn A2 to all-region ?

Yes, I updated my A2 a couple days after the 4.0 firmware became available. I don't use that player much anymore, but navigation seems quicker....and that's about the only changed I've noticed. I still can't get BTB no matter what settings I use when it is connected via HDMI->DVI to my Sony KP-46WT510 46" CRT RPTV.

I will mention that it is odd that step 13 in the 4.0 instructions say:

13) Remove power by unplugging unit and waiting at least 10 seconds. Then plug unit back into power.

I've done several firmware updates on my A2 and have never seen that mentioned. On prior firmware updates, it always advised to remove the disc, then to just press the power button. I made the decision to *not* follow the new instructions and pressed the power button. The old method worked fine and my A2 is working okay. I was worried that Toshiba had written the instructions incorrectly and that the new instructions would potentially "brick" my player. Has anybody updated their A2 following the new instructions.....just curious if it went okay?

I burned a 4.0 CD last week and installed in less than 10 minutes. Don't know what the charges are but I never had any issues with my player from day 1. I think some say they had problems with the Bourne Ultimatum combo disc in the past. I'll have to try mine to see if it plays thru cleanly.

My upgrade went fine, but the menu access problem with "The Searchers" still exists! It becomes a featureless disc since I can't access the menus. I reverted back to FW 2.7, which restored my access.

That IS very odd Chad. Another question I would pose is, if you actually need to unplug the unit, how would you know to do so if you were updating via ethernet?

When I upgraded the firmware on Toshiba TV it called for unpluging the TV also. The only reason I can think of is to reboot the device.

I need someone's help. I have never had this happen before so I'm at a loss. I downloaded and burned to CD Ver 4.0 for my HD-A2. When I load it into my player, the A2's read-out just continues blinking the words "Loading." But nothing ever happens & I have to re-set the player to get the disc ejected. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've never had that problem, but it sounds like a bad burn to me. I would burn a new disc, with a proven program, under proper guidlines, at a slow speed.
Not to say that you didn't do it correctly the first time, but stuff just happens sometimes. The disc could have been fubar from the beginning.

That would be my guess as well. I've burned probably 10 Toshiba HD DVD firmware discs and always use TY MIJ media, Nero Image burn at 24x, and a BenQ 1655 burner. I've never had one single coaster or problem. Junk media, junk software, and/or junk burner will result in......junk.

Well, I tried everyting icluding using a different burning program although the one I had been using (Active ISO) had always worked fine. I downloaded the file from Canada's Toshiba site as I always do so I don't have too unzip it (There's is a direct ISO file, not zipped), but I also tried going to the USA site & downloaded the zipped file, but that still didn't work.
Any other ideas?

Ken, stupid question but you ARE downloading the update for the A2 and not another model, like the XA2, right?
