Well, there might be a reason or 2 to go with something else... like HD DVD is DEAD and there hasn't been a new HD DVD movie released since around May 2008 or thereabouts (very few titles released in 2008 in total). If you don't mind having access only to about half the movies released between (roughly) 2005 and 2007 with a peppering of older titles with no hope that any newer titles will every be released, nor will any of the desirable "classics" every be released on HD DVD... then sure, HD DVD makes a great "HD source of choice."
There's a reason you got the player for $25.
Let us know how The Dark Knight, Wall-e, Hellboy 2, How the West Was Won, Wanted, and Cars look in high-def... oh, wait, you can't... those are all Blu-ray only. There's really nothing wrong with HD DVD... except there's nothing new being released.
