The 4.0 update will have all of the other updates included. I have updated the firmware sveral times and I'm currently running the 4.0. I have never had any issues with the player.

Good luck with yours!

The answer is yes, it will include all of the upgrades. It's like any software upgrade in that regard.

Thanks guys. I'm not having any problems, I just thought it should have the latest firmware. 4.0 will be the final upgrade then?

You only need to load the latest upgrade. I upgraded because a couple of movies would not play at 2.x.

Each update is considered comprehensive by Toshiba, but that doesn't mean that everything that ever worked will still work !

I had the same experience. I had some playback issues with a couple of discs and upgraded to 4.0 via the net and have (knocking heavily on a wooded object) zero issues.

It could be the placebo effect, however I think the player is more responsive to the remote commands and the load times have gotten slightly faster.

I'm glad I upgraded.

I have been having issues with SD dvd's freezing up on me. I downloaded 4.0 and I'm still having the problem. This is only happening with SD's. I am using component cables not hdmi. HDVD's are working fine. Not sure whats up.

Not that it would make a difference but is there a way to try the HDMI out to see if it is happening with that output as well? Try changing the output resolution to see if that works. I have some of my SD discs that when they start to play the message comes up that the higher output is not supported and says only 480p is supported. Then when I check both the player and the tv tell me the output is 720p.

Sorry there is not much else I can suggest.

What is the recommended setting for "Black Enhancement", On or Off?
I'm using the A2 with a Mits. HD1000 projector, which doesn't have the darkest blacks. Thanks.

I think I read somewhere it was best to leave off due to what is called "crushing blacks" or "black crush". I'm not sure exactly how to explain what that is but my best advise is to try it both on and off with the same sample material to see what is acceptable to your viewing experience.

As long as the projector is able to accept StudioRGB rather than just PCRGB brightness levels, there should be no crushing. I always use enhanced in my setup in order to get the best picture (doesn't cut off the below-black information). If you don't know for sure, all you can do is try it both ways and see which picture looks the most natural (particularly look for black detail -- make sure your test disc actually includes black detail, some don't).

I thought the consensus was Enhanced on for Component and off for HDMI. Or do I have that wrong?

I guess you go by consensus, I go by what works best with my equipment. Enhanced is definitely on with my HDMI (and component, and S-Video). My displays accept StudioRGB HDMI and enhanced gives me all the black level information the recording provides.

I don't know about the Studio RGB with my projector. I have the Mits. HD1000.
Then it sounds like you have a projector question, not an HD-A2 question. I suggest checking the manual and perhaps checking the appropriate projector forum. Or you can simply play with the setting and decide which mode pleases you best with that particular projector.

SUPERDAD here) got me to call the customer service for the upgrade disk sent to me.... WTH....save me the stress.

Still says a lot for Toshiba to send out update disc to users when their format "lost" the war but they still hang in there to support the customer.

Hi. Trying to get caught up here. Is the 4.0 upgrade still the latest version? Also, the ONLY HD title I own that won't play in HD-A2 is 'Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow' Won't load. HD-A2 displays an error message. Anyone owning SCATWOT have any luck with the upgrade? Thanks.

What is the specific (exact) error code displayed?
I'll look it up.

FWIW -- 2.7 works fine with every HD DVD title I've tried so far, including Sky Captain.

I have the D2 which is the same as the A2, anyways I am trying to play Troy with Dolby TrueHD but it seems that it doesnt send the TrueHD signal to my receiver, Denon 2809. It just sends it as a normal Dolby Digital sound...
Boy, I still have a lot of HD DVD titles but I sold the player back in late 07. What do you guys think? Is it better to buy another player for the 20 or so movies I have.....or to spend the money re-investing in BR versions?

Anybody wanting to replace Warner Bros. HD DVDs with Blu-ray versions... go to www.red2blu.com

You send in the cover art for Warner titles you own and for $5 per disc plus $7 shipping for the entire order they will send Blu-ray titles and you keep the HD DVD (minus the cover art, though many color printers will copy the cover art for you). There are excellent deals on multi-disc sets also... the 5-disc Ultimate Matrix set is yours in Blu-ray for $20 plus the cover art from just Revolutions (you don't even have to own the box to get the whole Blu-ray box) similar deal for Harry Potter boxes.

Any errors I ever got were fixed by deleting the data for that movie from the player's memory and trying again. I guess if it gets corrupted the disc won't load as it thinks the save data should be loaded first. Hope that helps.

The HD-A2 can't bitstream the HD audio codecs. However it will internally decode the DolbyTrueHD. What you want to see on your receiver is multichannel PCM. I can't remember the exact settings, i'll check tonight unless someone else posts before me.

So, what are the best audio settings for the A2. I just picked up an Onkyo HT-RC160 receiver, and was wondering what the best audio settings were to utilize the HDMI connection (Auto or PCM). If I'm using only HDMI, does it matter what I set the SPDIF connection at?

Thanks.

HDMI on Auto will give you the results you're looking for.

And no it does not matter what you set SPDIF to if you are using HDMI only.

WOW! I had no idea so much info existed! I have had a HD-A2 for a long time. I have had no problems with it at all. Never even knew about updates. I will try to figure out which version I have. It's probably the oldest!
