Sharp 46D62U or Samsung S4692D?

Thread Starter
I bought a Sharp 46D62U a few weeks ago (1080p LCD). It has some of the banding on it so I am returning it this weekend. My question is how much of a drop off is the Samsung S4692D (720p) from the Sharp that i currently have? I am not sure that I want to just get a new Sharp and risk going through 5 sets before I get one without banding, so I may just get a different TV, even though I LOVE the PQ of the Sharp outside the banding.

Also is there another TV anyone might recomend that is 46" that might be another good option, also that is in the same price range as the Sharp (~$2500). I ue it mostly for Sports, followed by movies and the occaisonal video game. I can't afford the Samsung or Sony 1080p models in 46" and I don't know that I'd like to drop down to 40".

The banding was that bad eh? I had a bad experience with a Vizio 46, so I was too far down to the lower end, was thinkg to going ot the Sharp, but maybe not.

My reason was same as yours, I don't want to deal with 4 units, 3 visits and still be unsatisfied.

I will be interested to see where recomendations come in on this, I too don't want to go up to the Sony.

Why not just get the 4695? I have it and its freakin' jawdropping.

want proof?

tonight's show over-the-air in 1080i on my 4695: http://home.comcast.net/~vcyeh/jayleno1080i.JPG

this is the full 1920x1080.

I too, wanted the D62U series from the Sharp back in October. However, after hearing and reading about the banding issues, I didn't want to deal with it.

And yes, you CAN afford the Samsung 46" 1080P's. They're around the price you paid for your 46D62U if you look hard enough. Just don't buy it in-retail stores like Best Buy.

If you go to circuit city, both the Sharp 46D62u and teh Samsung 4695 are the same price. I ordered the Sharp, and have my fingers crossed that I made the right choice. If it get banding, i'm returning it and picking up the samsung.

The Samsung is also excellent panel IMO.

It's sad to see what Sharp and there lack of proper Quality Control at the K2 Plant has let literally F__K up their own product lines and branding Quality reputation and someone ought to be cleaning house over there at the K2 PLANT!

Build a state of the art plant that produces POS panels after spending decades becoming the leader in LCD and lead to their own self destruction. I have two perfectly good panels the 45" and 57" and no flaws from the K1 plant but the K2 factory has become a Russian Roulette Consumer Purchase and they've had four months to correct these events which now dominates these threads to the point you simply cannot risk or remain loyal to a company that has such an attitude toward QC and just says swap it over and over until you get lucky! Bull ****!

I don't blame anyone for moving on and I'm shocked more people are not boycotting these purchases until they resolve these issues - it's shocking to see people cross their fingers and hope it's the Elite type panel it was promoted as - Horse Poohey, top of the line is a joke after viewing four months of letting the same events transition to the D92 with no resolution. This issue definitely needs the services of a Consumer Class Action since they've not resolved it on their own. What the hell I know for a fact they read these postings but are not permitted to interact. Perhaps we need to send a Japanese interpreted version - their dealers have got to be bitching about all the returns.

I'm not a sue happy person but there are cases where the consumer has to do something to change or else boycott purchases and vote with your wallets to say enough is enough. I'm a long time supporter of Sharp but this daily reporting of these events is insane for Sharp to let this go on.

While I've seen a D62 bandfree on display and it was excellent the poll numbers here demonstrate more than 50% crapshoot your delivery will be a flawed panel and I've saved thousands buying via the internet rather than a B&M and Internet purchases have no return rights unless Sharp chooses to cover their own warranty with a replacement and they won't know if the next one or the next one will be free of these redundant panel flaws.

Their QC perhaps is in need of a serious eye exam or a new way of examining their panels before they get placed on a TV. How could Joe Blow Consumer see this and their Engineers fail to detect the events all these many months.

Horse Poohey indeed, that about sums it up !!

Problem with class action, Sharp is swapping sets so you are not stuck.
Perhaps that is why they are so willing to swap, to avoid possible class action.

I just cannot bring myself to invest in one of these panels.
Have to wait for the Samsung 65 series or get another 96 panel.
I'd go for the 4696 with CableCARD, USB, etc.
With the severity of banding, I would stay away from the 62 series.

I agree with you 100% and I hope Sharp is reading this because they need to do a major turn around asap and assure us at some point in time a band free product. Nobody buys a 1080p product and expects to recieve this junk! It is hard to settle for flawed product!

Does Sharp have the same banding issue with the 42inch model (LC42D62U)?

Agree with Westa as well. The problem is that it seems many (most?) of the panels have one problem or another (sometimes multiple problems!). Banding, clouds, etc etc.

I returned a XBR and was going to go with a Samsung but saw clouding on those as well. I have been holding off since Sept last year. I think this is the first time in my life I have waited for anything so long.

Can't someone produce an acceptable LCD TV? I can't believe it is so hard to get it right.

Can anyone point me to a TV with similar specs to the 62 or 92 series that has great color, good blacks, and no defects? Please?

I would have a Pio Plasma by now if I could live with the glare on the screen...

Sheesh.

-Tom

ps: Given Sony's repsonse to the clouding issue I wouldn't buy another Sony product to save my file. I don't like their proprietary designs (memory stick, yeah right!) and declining quality over the last 5-7 years.

Sharp has the right attitude and I applaud them for it but what good is it if they can't ever fix the problem? Have they ever sent a 62-series owner a non-banding set as replacement?
