480p 16x9 Rayman: Raving Rabbits problems...

So I just got my component cables hooked up and everything looks great. I have the wii set to 480p and widescreen, but the weird thing is that all my games look good except rayman. It won't output in 16x9 and has the black bars on either side. When I had composite cables it would fill the screen, but now with the new component cables it won't. What am I doing wrong here? All my other games look great.

Bad news..... Rayman is not 16 x 9 or 480p! It's a 480i game. Welcome to the first generation of launch titles for the Wii!

Rayman doesn't run in 480p and it seems your tv won't distort a progressive signal... just reset your wii to 480i mode before playing Rayman and everything should be as it was before.

A bit of a pain, I really wish Rayman ran in 480p as it's nice looking game.

My PAL copy of Rayman work in 480p. even stats it on the box.

I was under the impression that every title for the Wii had 480p 16x9 support. Son of a...

According to the manual it has progressive scan and 16x9. However, with Nintendo component cables it still only outputs to 480i. Curiously, the video option listed in the manual is nowhere to be found in-game.

Yeah also in widescreen mode everything looked streetched. This is after I set progressive scan and 16:9 widescreen in the wii hardware. There was no option within the game itself, unless I missed it.

Is there a big difference in PQ between the PAL and US version? If so, will the PAL version work on my US Wii?
the wii is not region free so the PAL game will not work in a regular US Wii system.

You know, the game is still fun, widescreen or not.
it runs fine in 16:9 on my "classic" GWII 60".. its a bit stretched but.. hey its Rayman and the characters are a bit odd looking anyway

you'd change your mind after your first pig race...

Regardless whether it is widescreen or not the game is a party favorite once you unlock most of the games for multiplayer use.

It's fun stretched, though my friend likes to scream that he loses the ice-curling type game because the circle is not a circle.

I think i will try it and run it streached then. It looks real fun, how is the replayability. Is it more of a rent then buy?
Can anyone comment on which of the mini-games are the best for multiplayer play? Preferrably ones where players can play at once and don't have to take turns?

If you have other people over often then it is worth keeping, if you are going to play by yourself then I would rent it. You have to unlock the games in single player before you can play them in multiplayer so remember that if you just wanna pick it up for a party or something.

I believe most GameCube and surely most Wii games will not have a 'true' 16:9 ratio in that developers worked in direct 4:3 and 16:9 graphics and support. Sure you can play them to fill your 16:9 display by 'filling' the 4:3 480i or 480p image to it but like what was mentioned above, everything will have a slight stretch, i.e. circles will be more eliptical, etc. I play all of my 480p available GameCube games on a secondary LCD HDTV and choose to fill the screen. The distortion isn't great enough to take away from playing them. Of course with the low resolution and low overscan on the display, the image is really 'window boxed' with black bars all around, stretched or not.

I'm not sure why you would say this. Circles look like circles, not elipses, when using a game designed for 16:9 mode. It's basically the same as an anamorphic DVD.

Most of the GameCube and Wii games that can do 480p aren't specially made for 16:9. You can stretch them to fill a 16:9 display. I didn't mean games expressly designed with 16:9 in mind by the developer.

OK, but why do you say this:

I agree with the comment as far as the GC goes, but why say "surely most Wii games will not have a true 16:9 ratio"? Why do you think this? It might (might) be true now, but why do you think it will be this way in the future?

No, hopefully not in the future but now yes. I've played Mario Sunshine for the GameCube which came out long after the GameCube's release on a 16:9 LCD display stretch and it was good. I was just happy for 480p support at the time but 16:9 aspect would have been nice too.

90% of the Gamecube's first party games were 480p capable. Which is funny, when you consider that Nintendo constantly pooh-poohed the idea that anyone even wanted component cables.

From what I've heard, the US release of Rayman was supposed to be 16:9 and 480p, but they didn't get it completed in time for the launch. It's still a super-fun party game, though.
