Comparable to Onkyo HT540

The Onkyo HT540 7.1 speaker package has gotten good reviews on Cnet. Have seen a few references here on AVSForum but not many in a search.

For $275, you get 3 fronts w/ two 5" woofers, and 4 "sats" but they're relatively large, plus a 230W sub. Looks like they might just have spring clips though?

Have been trying to wade through all the posts to see what else looks similar/better in same or similar px range. Have seen refs to getting BIC H-100 sub and various other suggestions for spkrs. Too late to Advent H200 party as apparently the rest of the world decided to buy these.

App will be HT w/Pioneer VSX 816 in a finished basement area, 20' by 30' w/ 8ft ceilings. Will probably just stick with 5.1 rather than going 7.1 but we'll see.

Basically a noob on speakers - only thing I've owned is an old Kenwood all-in-one minisystem.

Any suggestions of which direction to head are appreciated. Would like to keep total cost at or below $500 and maximize quality.
