KEF Q-Series... Advise pls

Hey guys...

I have a room -18' long X 16' Wide, I am putting in a 5.1 theater room and thinking about doing the KEF IQ9's for the fronts, The KEF IQ6C for center, and the KEF IQ8DS for the surrounds. I want to go with the KEF 3500 for the subwoofer...

I know I should have pre-wired for 7.1 but it's all done now so I'm stuck with 5.1.

My question is; With the size of the room, will the IQ8DS's have enough throw to make for good surrounds. I've read good things about this system and am excited to hear what you guys think...

I'm gunna run the speakers off of a Yamaha RX-V2700 with a Denon DVD-1930CI for my DVD player.

Also.... since the room has no windows and all walls are just flat drywall with a carpeted floor, I was thinking of placing acoustic panels on the side walls at the point of first reflection and on the back wall behind the couch... what do ya think??

I'm all for the iQs and treatments, but at list you do much better than the KEF sub. How much are you looking at for the sub?

Your electronics will be fine.

I question the KEF sub too. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a bit expensive. For the same price you could get the SVS PB12+/2. The KEF is prettier though...

I can do $1000-$1500 CDN for the sub... I was thinking that would be the weak link.

You guys think the surrounds will be fine tho?

In Canada I can only get the SVS PB12+2 from an online retailer... So I wouldn't be able to hear it first... At $1599 that is quite a leap of faith. Has anyone heard it? Is it worth the money??

You said that you had the room prewired, what is the placement for the surrounds? The iQ8ds is meant to be at the sides, 90-110 degrees from listening position.

Take a peek at the sub forum, there's many SVS owners.

I can honestly say that SVS Sub is the best bass I have ever heard. I owned a pretty decent sub but when I completed my HT I wanted to upgrade. I did not originally intend on buying a new sub but when I got the itch all paths of research pointed to SVS. I spent about $600.00 on the 25-31pci without hearing it first (took the gamble). I have to say that it payed off big time! Every time I host a movie party people rave about the sound, mostly becauseof the bass!

Good Luck!

Just intalled two 7.1 systems, both using 1q8ds for sides and rear. After tweaking the bass management on the recievers (AVR350) they sounded fantastic. Very enveloping surround and good enough for decent PLII music as well.

For movies, dipoles actually work well for rear as well as sides. for music, theres pros & cons. But those are large surrounds and they should definitely put out plenty of sound. I have a slightly smaller room and was doing 7.1 but have changed it to 5.1 because the surrounds & rears were really right next to each other.
