First impressions.. Super Swing Golf and Metal Slug Anthology

I picked up both of these games tonight on my way home from work from ToysRUS. I've had Metal Slug Anthology prebooked there before the Wii was released. I had Super Swing Golf prebooked at EB Games but they never got the shipment in and didn't know when it was going to arrive.

Neither game was on the store shelf. I had to ask for both. Metal Slug was in back. It took 2 employees to find them. Super Swing Golf was in a locked display case with the other Wii games, somewhat hidden behind other titles.

My wife and I tried Super Swing Golf first. We both like Wii Sports Golf and were really interested to see this game since it has 11 full 18 hole courses to choose from. The graphics are anime style. You pick a male or female character, then start golfing. You can customize the character with clothing and other items as you score points playing the game.

It looked like 3 of the courses were available from the 11 to start. Most likely you have to unlock or purchase the other courses with the points/money you earn from playing the game.

We didn't do the tutorial, which we probably should have tried in hindsight. The controls are fairly straight forward. You use the Wii Remote to swing the club back to the power level you want, then hold down A and swing forward to make the shot. If you curve the Wii Remote left or right you will hook or slice the shot accordingly.

There are basic controls over direction of the ball to account for the wind, as well as the ability to switch from the suggested club. You can also do special shots like power or super shots using points earned as you progess through the holes on the course.

The graphics are decent, and remind me of the Hot Shots golf series. The music seemed to fit the graphics and game environment. Gameplay is different from Wii Sports golf, but is still fun to play.

I do like the option of more holes and courses to select from plus the character customization and special shots. So far it looks pretty good. We only did 9 holes but are looking forward to trying it more.

I loaded up Metal Slug Anthology next. For those not familiar with the Metal Slug series, it is a side scrolling action game where you play soldiers freeing hostages and shooting down enemies along the way. You pickup powerups for weapons as well as have the ablity to jump in vehicles along the way like tanks, armored horses, etc. The shooting gameplay is similar to contra and is a lot of fun to play.

This game has 7 Metal Slug games in it. I tried Metal Slug 6 tonight and made it through the first stage. It was alot of fun. I did notice you can do 2 players at once and you do have the option of unlimited continues. I think this game would be an absolute blast with 2 players.

There are several ways to control your character on screen. I'd say at least 6 options if not more were in the game options menu. I went with the default option of right handed Wii Remote. In this mode the Wii Remote direction pad is used to control your character and where your gun shoots. You use buttons 1 and 2, one for shoot, one for jump. Bombs can be thrown by moving the Wii Remote up or down while playing. The Wii Remote is held sideways like for Excite Truck for this mode of play.

I found the controls to be very good. The onscreen action looked like the arcade graphics for the series and I saw absolutely no slowdown in framerate even with many enemies on screen and large fullscreen boss fights.

I'm looking foward to playing this more, and trying the 2 player mode. Oh yes.. you can use the Wii Remote, Nunchuck, a combination of the two, or the gamecube controllers to control your character. Good stuff here... definitely worth the $40 pricetag.

I'll post more thoughts on both games after I get to play them more.

cool, thanks.

Here's the big question - which feels more like playing golf, wii sports or super swing golf?

I would say the Wii Sports Golf is a bit more realistic just based on the golf swing. In this game you have options of pressing buttons while swinging or tilting the controller so it is different. For realism, I'd guess the best bet would be Tiger Woods when that comes out.

I'm at work now, so I'm not sure about the 16x9 and progressive scan support. I can look when I get home tonight and try and respond to those questions.

Here is a review for the Japanese version of this game:

A preview on IGN's website does say it supports progressive scan and prologic 2. No mention of 16x9 there but I can check tonight.

I think I'll be waiting for TW myself. A little TOO Anime for golf methinks.

Another question about SSG. Are you able to change the controller configuration in order to use a button to swing? I tend to get cracked out on videogame golf (Hot Shots for the PSP never left my pocket), but I won't always be in the mood to stand up and swing a remote like a golf club, so I'd like to have a choice in how I use the controller.

Thanks for the impressions on both the games. I look forward to getting both of them. I am picking up Super Swing Golf and Elebits today after work.

Ok..

Let me try and answer the questions posed so far:

I just checked the manual and I see no reference to progressive scan mode even though reviews and previews I have read say this game supports it. I can't see anything referencing 16x9 support either.

Can someone tell me how other 16x9 games handle this? Do you change the display on the Wii setup itself, or in the game, or both? I can try it and let you guys know if someone can give me a valid way to test it.

I found the answer to the question about swinging the wii remote versus using buttons to play. The manual says in the game setup menu there is an option to switch to button mode for making your shots. You use the B button and timing to make the shots rather than swinging the Wii Remote and hitting the A button. So, yes it appears you can play with only buttons if you prefer.

I don't agree with this at all, the Tiger Woods games have always been way too easy to be considered the slightest bit realistic. In TW06, I would consistently get 10 or more under par for each round, and this was in the "Tournament mode" where the caddy tips were turned off. I feel like the best golf game I've played realism and difficulty wise is this online RPG golf game (free) called Shot-Online. The putting wasn't the greatest in it, but it feels more like real golf because you have to work and make SMART and accurate shots as opposed to TW where you can just power the ball as much as you want and get birdies and eagles.

Got Super Swing Golf from Gamefly today and my overall impressions are positive. It is fun to play but a bit more cumbersome to setup shots than Wii Sports Golf. I wish they would make a full game out of that! The other thing is that I don't care for the two characters you have to choose from, and the boy character looks like a lesbian.

Overall it's good but probably not a buy for me. We'll see after some more play time.

None of the games seem to tell in the manual or on the box that they are widescreen, which is annoying Zelda mentioned it just as a selling point since they knew there are 2 versions being released and were giving another reason for buying the wii version.

Rayman mentions that it IS 16x9 and that there is an option in the menu that doesn't really exist. They also call "story mode" "history mode" for some reason even though the screenshot shows the former.

I rented Super Swing golf since my wife was really enjoying the WiiSports Golf.

I think we made it through about 6 holes before the music and theatrics (the characters break down and sob if you get over par) made us turn the game off.

The motion mechanics just were not there either. For it to register a swing for me, I had to keep my elbow and wrist locked and just move at the shoulder.

Set your television to not stretch the image. If the game is 16x9, it should look squished together in a 4x3 box. I think.

I was wondering if metal slug supported the gamecube controllers, good to see that it does
