new Gentoo Linux install for the PS3

tokka from the Gentoo forums has posted an install walkthrough to help people get Gentoo setup on their PS3.
Installing Gentoo on the PS3 & Installing a Gentoo stage4 tarball on the PS3

They're working on optimizing the compile and getting the right software installed. Hopefully we'll see a semi-official PS3 profile and overlay in portage in the near future.

Hey,

Not exactly the same thing but ,,.. I would love to see MythDora ported to PS3. I tried it on my HTPC and it didn't work well with my older hardware but I think it could be great for a PS3 with a USB HDTV tuner.

MythDora does sound like a good fit. I think there's a similar thing for Freevo but I can't find it now. I'm still hoping oxine is going to work well enough on the PS3 for me but I don't remember if it can run MAME games or not.

PS- I know when I was trying Freevo out on my Shuttle XPC that I compiled it to run outside of X (just the framebuffer mode I think). I've been wanting to know if it's possible to run the PS3 in that same mode to save having to load X. It made for quicker startup times, less RAM used and a lot less compiling needed (because Gentoo didn't have to compile X and a desktop).

Anyone installed this yet? I've just tried, but keep getting errors regarding not having enough disk space.

Think the above instructions steps were meant for 20GB drives.... I have a 60GB drive, and with 10GB dedicated to the GameOS (PS3). Under this setup, does anyone know what I need to change to make the installation work?

Works fine for me. I'm using a 10 GB Linux partition and their seems to be plenty of room left over.

They've since released an official experimental minimal install CD and a 64 bit/32 bit userland stage4 environment that has worked well for me. So far I've gotten plenty of servers running (like samba and ssh) and a xfce4 desktop environment.

There are also now semi-official install instructions.

I've not gotten further because that damn motorstorm demo is sucking all of my free time away.

That's the instruction set I've used. I am trying to make the linux partition bigger because to me, 10GB isn't enough.

I get stuck with the tar ball decompression. During the tar, I get an error saying not enough disk space. After that, all of the following steps fail.

Gentoo may be the best and the fastest out there, but I think I should wait until they've improved the installation process, or someone comes up with a successful install instructions based on larger linux partition on the PS3....

Those are actually easy Gentoo instructions. Being a stage4 install for a fixed platform (all hardware the same), many steps have been taken out that would exist in a stage3 install on a platform like an x86 PC. A pre-configured/pre-compiled kernel and a working X environment are included to help simplify the experience.

My guess would be that you incorrectly formatted the partitions or you are trying to install onto the swap partition.
