Optical Splitter not working??

Thread Starter
I just purchased a TOSLINK optical splitter
advertised as two way (split one device to two receivers or two devices to one receiver)

I have a PS3 and a XB 360 I want to connect to my receiver with only one optical input.

Right now I'm waiting on my 3rd optical cable to show, but I wanted to test the splitter now. I hooked one optical cable from the PS3 to the splitter and then another from the splitter to the receiver. No sound. Tested the wires and all good. I tried every combo on the splitter for the two wires and nothing. Does the splitter need all three holes in use to work correctly? Does the splitter just not work?

First see if the splitter has those little rubber caps on the inside of the hole to prevent dust from going into the device ,another thing is it might not work unless all 3 cables are hooked up.
But I like using an optical selector which is alot better than the splitter.

I first tried a splitter then that selector and neither one works. Even when I just use it as an extension between one source and input nothing comes through. I see the red light at the end but nothing.

Why not run 1 optical and 1 coax?

Based upon his post, I would assume it's either because neither the PS3 nor the XBOX has a digi coax output, or because his reciever only has an optical input. Most likely, it's the former.

Correct. I have a receiver with one optical in and I need to run optical out from both my tv and ps3. What I don't understand is why this thing isn't working even when I see the red light at the end.

Are you sure that your receiver's input is set to optical?

You might have to cycle through analog/coax/optical options for the particular input.

Your post isn't clear...was optical working before you introduced the splitter?

If I plug the optical cables directly from source to input, it works. I tried every one of the 3 cables. But when I put the selector in the middle, it doesn't work. Same thing when I tried the splitter.
