Did you check the OmniMount Moda Wall furniture set? It comes as 1-2 glass shelves, you can see it on Circuitcity web page, but get it much cheaper online...

I was in the same position. One thing I thought of was building a stand from Schedule 80 PVC pipe. this would be fairly easy if you are handy with PVC pipe. For the actual mount of the projector, there are several manufactures that make mounts which are meant to attach to the ceiling with 1 1/2 pipe (cheif, premiere). You could easily attach the mount to the PVC stand using 1 1/2 pipe fittings. There are even some mounts with a quick disconnect, so that you can disconnect the projector if you want, then remove the stand. The downside is that the pvc pipe is not really nice looking, but it may work for you. you could make some type of cosmetic cover to go over the PVC stand, but if you are going to go through that trouble you might as well make one out of nice looking wood.
I decided to use the pipe mount on the ceiling. When I want to remove the projector, I will just unmount the projector, then uncrew the pipe. The projector is stored behind a couch, directly under the projector mount. I painted the pipe female pipe fitting which I have on ceiling the same color as the ceiling. Hope this helps.

I just put a bookcase type rack in the back of the room with the PJ on the top shelf--Was less than $50 at Target and holds all my equip and is perfect height. The only downside is the the cables show a little more that I would like---but i can probably improve that one day by re-doing my connections a little more neatly....

Any stands (not wall mounted) out there that don't look like they are from a school clearance sale?

That looks promising, but even the large tray seems to be too small for my Panasonic PT-AX200

I think it would work. There is ample velcro to accomodate very large projectors. I have a Sanyo PLZ-4 on the standard tray and it works great. The thing to keep in mind with the Airstand is that you don't need the feet on the projector to touch anything. You tilt the entire platform to any direction in the 3 dimensions, to match the video with the screen. No need to adjust the little feet at all, the projector just sits flat on the tray. My feet hang over the edge and it doesn't change a thing.

Best of luck in your decisions, half the fun is the shopping part!

At the risk of stating the obvious; Be sure mounting the projector like that does not cause any air flow issues. Make sure how & where your model PJ takes in cool air & blows out the hot -- so those paths are not blocked or you may have an overheating problem. Just a thought.

I bought one of these: Dayton TSS100K Tripod Speaker Stand Black

Then I added a wooden platform (stained black) to the mounting platform that was included with the tripod.

I wanted something that was both adjustable and could be easily disassembled for when I'm not using it. The price was right, and I've been very happy with it. It's sturdy, doesn't take up a lot of floor space, and doesn't look too bad.

Brilliant idea. And I like the price.

I looked at a lot of other solutions, but this one really seemed like the best option. It only took part of a weekend to cut the wood to size, drill the holes, and stain the wood.

While a ceiling mount would have been preferable, it's more of a hassle, can't be moved easily or taken down, etc. And, this solution was OK with the wife, which made it a winner.

Let me know if you'd like any specific information on it.
