realized that RCA doesn't support the player as well as Toshiba. I was looking at the A1 and XA1 but I couldn't find it at the price I wanted for a NEW player. I don't like buying used or refurb.
Then this player just came out of nowhere and I got the price I was looking for a brand new player. But the problem is I did little research before buying it and right after I pulled the trigger, I mean seconds after I realize that it has this trouble with firmware updates and such. Then I read about all the skipping and freezing that has been talked about on this forum and i'm having second thoughts already.
I bought the HD-DVD add on for the 360 and was happy with it but I decided to return it to get the A1. Because I wanted the True HD support and the upconversion for regular DVD's. I have a panasonic plasma which has 2 HDMI inputs but no VGA so the 360 player wasn't so great for me with SD-DVD's.
The 360 player was missing some features and has inferior sound but I wasn't looking at the pluses. It never EVER EVER skipped on me or froze or anything like that. And I had it for about 3 weeks before returning it. The image quality was great also. It was also a fast player. I always play DVD's using my 360 in my bedroom and honestly I didn't notice much of a speed difference playing HD-DVD's with the HD-DVD add on. So that was great. The sound was good but not better than the sound on regular DVD's. Some say it's worse, I say it's the same but you have to turn it up a bit which I don't mind. And the price was just beautiful.
I think i've made a mistake by returning the 360 HD-DVD add on drive and buying this RCA HD-DVD player.
Are there any proud RCA owners in this forum? Do you know if I can just use the firmware updates for the HD-A1 for my RCA? Does this unit skip and freeze a lot? Did I make a big mistake?

. I'm still running version 1.0 and my HDV5000 gives me no problems at all.

The A2 takes a FULL TWO MINUTES to do the HDCP handshake and this happens routinely whenever I switch away from the A2 input and then come back or when I first turn the A2 on. Same thing.
I don't understand this but the blacks seem blacker, the darker scenes seem to have more color and shadow detail to them. The flesh tones are absolutely magnificent! Contrast is terrific as well. This is all straight out of the box without changing any of my settings!?!?
