Casino - High-Def Digest Review

Thread Starter
Peter Bracke on Casino:

'Casino' may be my favorite Martin Scorsese "mob movie," even though the general consensus favors 'GoodFellas' or 'Mean Streets.' Regardless, any serious student of the filmmaker has to see this one -- and the excellent performances only seal the deal. This HD DVD from Universal is also excellent. The transfer really shines, and I liked all of the extras, too. Though perhaps not an absolutely essential upgrade over the standard-def DVD release, it is still enough of a step up to rate as highly recommended.

Can't wait for this one on Tuesday

I preferred Casino over Goodfellas as well. I liked the pacing of Casino a little better. Also, I think I could empathize with Deniro's character more than Liotta's. Eh...and to top it off, Casino Pesci's demise is worse. Beat down in your tighty whities.

you know, i saw this on i think tnt some days ago and it didn't convince me enough to really go after the hd, the sd looks great already i think but maybe i'll see some more reviews and see what it's like

Casino was on UHD about a month back. Is it coincidental that Universal has released many of their HD DVD's after airing them on UHD?

the finest use of the "c-word" in cinematic history... topping even the glorious Deadwood run...

Pre-ordered from Amazon with a heap of other discs, sadly I think it'll ship sometime in Feb.

Yes, I'd say it's a coincidence. I mean, I'm sure they were chosen to be aired on UHD for many of the same reasons they were chosen to be released on HD DVD, but I don't think airing these movies on UHD is part of a calculated HD DVD marketing strategy or anything.

Casino first aired on Universal HD on April 23rd, 2005. I haven't done a count of how many movies have aired on UHD, but it's many, many dozens, and only a handful of them have shown up on HD DVD.

Im going to have to pick this up. Not only because its an impressive HDDVD. But also because i got rid of the DVD version i owned because one entire 10 min section of the film was unplayable.

A tradition Scorsese carried on in "The Departed".

Unfortunately it lookslike we will not be carrying this movie at Best Buy. :-(

It doesn't really matter. At this point, BB isn't even on the radar for HD DVD purchases.

This movie is one of the reasons I finally pulled the trigger on HD DVD. Definitely a must-buy.

Circuit City had 2 copies.

Putting this on as soon as I get home.

My copy arrived from Amazon today, I can't wait to watch it. A great companion piece to GOODFELLAS.

I just ordered this and Goodfellas from Amazon. $35 for both seems very fair. I have never owned Casino (not sure why, love the movie) and my DVD copy of Goodfellas was a flipper. I now have a few new movies to watch this holiday weekend. Nothing says Merry Christmas like these two movies!

Best Buy in Vancouver BC has 5 (actually only 4 now) copies of it if anyone in the area is interested.

Can you clarify this post a bit? Did you watch in SD or HD on TNT? Where was the good looking sd version?
I watched Casino 2-nite and it's a lovely disc but it made my 2.0 Toshiba stutter atleast 50 times. The disc has a good, clean appearance. Maybe it's my imagination but I'm beginning to think that Universal titles are the most troublesome...? I'm gonna exchange the disc.

Played beautifully on my A1. Finally the HD DVD of this movie and I love it. SD version now gone on Ebay. Picture is very good with great colors.

I went to BB to get this and they didn't have it out. I asked one of the blue shirts to check the computer and he did. None of the 6 or 8 stores in the vicinity have it. Target was a no-go, either.

Where else are people getting this title? Thanks.

i had mine delivered yesterday from amazon.com. 17.99 shipped.

Yea, just checked amazon. 19.95 before 10% off deal.

Played with no problems and looked incredible. The picture quality is perfection, and the grain and dirt only enhance the gritty cinematography.

That's odd, because all of my problems have been with Warner titles. At least 5 or 6 of them have given me playback problems. I have never had an issue with a Universal title, and I have most titles from both studios. I don't own enough Paramount HD DVDs to comment either way.

I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps packaging comes into play here. I did have one Warner title that had a small smudge on it right out of the package. My copy of Superman Returns caused my player to hard crash in the same spot twice (the Toshiba player has lously error recovery). I examined the disc and could not see a problem. I cleaned it anyway using a soft lint-free towelette that I use for cleaning my glasses. The disc has played fine since then.
