Is your PS3 silent, a little noisy or very loud

I am starting this thread poll to aid anyone who thinks they might have an issue with their PS3 because it is noisy. Many are saying their PS3 is silent, some are saying it is a little noisy and some are saying it is very loud.

i have no sound/noise issues with my ps3. its quite silent. if i mute the volume, i might be able to hear the fan if i'm paying attention to it or trying to hear for it. otherwise, its silent.

I voted silent.....But if i forget to open the AV cabinet the turbine fan kicks in and it is loud. And there are definate gradations of loud (ie. different fan speeds). I also notice the fan more when the cabinet is open and the PS3 is running high graphic games like motorstorm - seems to generate more heat during this gameplay.

mine makes a slight noise during startup, but then is totally quiet. i have it in an open media rack on a glass shelve at the bottom. Oh, i am also in a basement that stays around 60 degrees. i have never heard my PS3 make any noise, other than startup. i also sit about 12' away from it. My 360 you can hear at the top of the stairs 25' away from it. Sony got the noise part of the console right.

Completely Silent. Only during inserting/ejecting discs is when I hear it.
Completely Silent. Except when I copy cds, well some of them anyway like Guns N' Roses cd that the PS3 gets loud.
Super-quiet...then again, I am sitting about 20' away, but still. No noticable noises.
I sit 12-15 feet away ( Man I love that controller), and my 5.1 sytem is usually pretty loud but mine is very quiet. It does put off some heat though!

The poll is flawed. The PS3 is silent until the fans come on, and they come one two settings. So, the PS3 can start out silent, get hot and the fans kick in, or if it gets really hot, the fans kick in high gear and really blow.

So my answer to your poll is:

'My PS3 is silent, a little noisy and very loud depending on usage and ventilation.'

Too loud for a BR player or web use.
I have to turn up the movie volume to get over the fan noise.

Have a 60GB China made PS3, will try to swap for 20GB within the return period.

I'm wondering if a hardware change was made as the silent ones were over heating?
Both noisy ones I've had came with the updated firmware.

I think this would depend on your perception of what is loud, and also based on your setup as well. Having said that, I've never heard the PS3 screaching with the fan running at full blast. But quite hum of fan running is there, but barely noticeable (based on my perception). Your ears may differ...

I have a 60 inch TV, and my couch is about 10 feet away from the TV (PS3 below TV). When playing games, watching a movie or even surfing the web, I typically don't hear anything...

I too believe this poll is flawed since there is no easy way to measure the noise, and classify what is truly loud unless you use a decimeter using different applications such as games, movies all used at a well vented space.

I made some effort to have a near silent HTPC and it is.
The PS3 is no where near silent.

I dont want to hear the playback device at all when watching a movie,
and I'm used to silence with on the web.
The PS3 is by far much quieter than my front projector, I have never heard it from my normal seats.
I never even hear it at about 10-12 ft
Silent until the BD drive is loading. I can hear the disc spin and the heads moving ever so quietly.
Mine is not noisy at all. Yes I can hear the BD drive loading like everyone else which is normal. However I can't call that noisy at all since the room has to be silent to hear it..

I suggest yours has issues with heat or ventilation maybe. I did the poll with two things in mind. To find out how many are silent and to help those with noisy ones to see if it warrants looking into further. Look how many are dead silent.

I sit six feet away from mine. Blu ray movies, Games, etc. and not a sound from it, I swear except when putting in a disc at startup then back to silent. The noise of the drive I consider as normal upon startup. Even that is minimal in terms of noise. When I turn the PS3 on I hear a fan ngage which then shuts off immediately.

I like to keep my house warm. In fact I have a space heater plugged in blowing hot air between me and the PS3. It is about 4 ft away from the PS3. Even with that I have no issues or noise of fans etc.

i have played resistance for over 3 hrs. straight with my tv on very low and never heard my ps3 make any sound, the glass shelf it was sitting on got very warm, but no noise.

I can only hear it in low ambient noise conditions. If the fridge comes on, I think it makes more noise.

I voted slight noise. I consider wall transformers (wall warts) noisy mind you.

I'm sure the PS3 has variable rate fans.

It will be different for everyone depending on the environment they put it in.

You also have a wide variety of ears. You have kids that blast Itunes into their head all day that will say it's silent and you AudioPhile/HT nuts that work extremely hard to control noise that will say it's noisy. And everything in between.

It's better than I expected, considering how much horse power is in it.
I was also worried it would be running 24/7 like DVR, but it does basically shutoff when not in use and it completely silent.

Mine is slightly louder than my Sony DVR, which I thought was pretty good.

I wish my DVR would spin the drives down when it's not doing anything.

It also depends what you doing with it. I've been watching mostly DVD's so far.

Games may crankup the MIPs a bit and crank up the fans.

Not sure if Decoders will cause it to chew up MIPs as well.
Based on reading the furture plans for PS3 codecs will chew up mips (like SACD) and may cause it to run warmer.

So there are lots of variables to consider.

Mine is in a completely open rack (screen sides, open front and back).
My speakers have the amps in them so my rack runs very cool.

I also raised the PS3 on 4 rubber feet for more cooling (not that it was running hot) I'd like it to keep the fans at as low a rate as possible (even when working hard).
My Chinese 60Gb is of the louder variety -- as in, perpetually loud. But, I'm fine with it. I figure it's a trade: louder machine but more efficient cooling (so long as the fans last). I did the rubber feet trick as well, since my PS3 sits on a wooden shelf.

I also don't mind another excuse to raise the volume : )

If your PS3 sounds completely silent to you, you need a hearing test, stat. The PS3 is quite silent compared to the Xbox 360, but the fan and drive noise is still audible.
Voted "PS3 is slightly noisy, as in I can hear it sometimes".

Sitting 8' away, I can hear the PS3 humming along even at idle or while spinning a BD (albeit with the movie sound muted). But once I turn up the volume to normal listening levels, I can't hear it.
I can hear mine, but ONLY if I have the audio off and listen for it. So I'd consider that silent.

One time a game was making it have some weird noises which I could hear, but then went away....

In hindsight, I now realize what I meant by silent was hearing no noise other than the initial fan startup or disc load noise. I can see why in a poll like this or discussion it is important to be specific and to communicate exactly what we are or aren't experiencing.

You are correct George, there is noise, but I was meaning silent once the above two situations had passed. I have never heard the fan kick on in mine to a higher level or louder noise, nor have I ever heard the hum as some describe other than initial disc loading.

Silent.
Mine is silent for the first 15 minutes it is on, then gets "a little noisy". It's by no means as loud as my 360 or original Xbox, and probably not as loud as my 1st gen PS2. It's a 60gb model, a December born on date, and manufactured in China. I can't believe that this is an abnormal amount of noise. I'm really curious to know what others consider silent, and whether they're truly silent for the duration of their use.
I think mine has a problem, because the fan is always on. I turned my 20GB PS3 on yesterday, left is sitting at the menu screen with no game in for 5 minutes, then came back and the fan was on. The area where the fan is (right side - or bottom if it were vertical) gets extremely hot to the touch.
I don't consider my 360 loud. But in relation to the 360 the PS3 is quiet. However as a component on it's own it is not silent as you can easily hear the fans.
My PS3 is really quiet, especially compared to my 360 (which I just replaced).
