Magnepan MMG owners your input would be appreciated

Thread Starter
alright,
Im looking to replace my surround system with new speakers, my current receiver is a mid level hk 65w x 7

Im seriously considering the mmg's

because Ive been reading the sound stage is massive and the imaging is very good.

bottom end is not an issue as I have two svs subs to handle the low end.

Before I bite the bullet, I would like to know what your thoughts are on the speakers, if you can post some pictures of your mmgs please do so, Id like to get an idea on how big it is and how it will match room decor.

music is most important, movies are not as important. I currently use Mirage omni speakers that cost me $600 a pair 5 years ago, would the mmgs be considered an upgrade?

I dont want to really downgrade.

i cant decide on the new omni 550s which are $800 a pair or the the maggies at $550 a pair. I like the omni speaker design, but not having heard the new omni line, i dont know, since mirage has been dedclining in sound quality ever since the omnisats and seem to be sacrificing sound quality more and more every year.

I like the omnis I have because of the off axis response, natural type sound for casual listening and exhorbiant sound stage. however I miss the image precision and they seem to be lacking in detail and a bit too warm for my preferences, however I dont like over bearing klipsch detail, I just like to hear unintrusive detail.

any opinions would be appreciated,
God bless

I have a HT set up with MMGs in the front and MMG-Ws in the rear (also with an SVS sub). I mostly listen to music (rock, classical and New Age), including multichannel hi-rez SACD and DVD-Audio. Couldn't be happier; well, I guess I could be happier if I had a pair of the top-end Magnepans, but considering my budget it's the best sound I've heard. Fabulous soundstage. I find myself absolutely immersed in the sound.

Sorry, I don't have any pix, but you should be able to get a sense of their size from the Magnepan website. And remember, you have an in-home trial period; you can send 'em back if you don't like 'em.

I really think you are hard pressed to find a better speaker at under $1000 for treble and midrange. But you need to hear them first because they do have some limitations (as all speakers do, except for whichever speaker pulliamm is using at the time).

How big is your room? MMGs of course will not go super loud and work better in smaller rooms IMO. I think the HK should drive them without problem as Harman Kardon receivers are one of the few mass market receivers that can drive 4 ohm loads. You are surrounded by the music but you have a much smaller sweet spot than many speakers. I think MMGs are good speakers but their magic is in the sweet spot and off axis sound isn't as impressive. They also need space to breathe. You need a minimum two feet distance from side and back walls. Preferably 3 feet IMO.

I run a full Maggie HT(MMG's,MMGW's and MMGC).As posted above, the sweet spot is narrow, but the imaging and soundstage are very impressive at the MMGs price point.

Clarity on good recordings is simply amazing.Be aware poor recordings will sound even worse on the MMG's. For music, they are a real bargain IMHO.

I have MMGs driven with an Arcam 300 with a Paradigm sub, and will echo what others have said. Without the sub, I think they sound a little bright, but the sub fills that gap for me. They do have a narrow sweet spot for best imaging. I have some doubts about 65W being enough to drive these - they are not efficient! But - I am VERY happy with these, the bang for the buck is huge.

I have a Mirage setup for my home theater matched to a SVS sub and it sounds great... for home theater... multi channel music is good but not great. Going to be setting up a 2.1 system for the bedroom with a pair of MMG's and Omni S8 (left over from when I got the SVS. I'll let you know how it sounds and maybe post a pic. Cheers!!

I auditioned a pair of MMGs like 20+ years ago, they were driven at the dealer by a low-end 35wpc Denon receiver. (I still have the receiver) At the time, I recall the MMGs had a very small sweet spot, in both the horizontal and vertical axis. You had to sit in one chair, in one spot, to get the details and balance right.

My question is: with adequate power, are MMGs (or MMGWs) suitable for a larger audience, with couches, stuffed chairs 4-5 people milling about?
Thanks,

I have heard the mmg at the store, the sound very good, very spacious, superb clarity and great imaging and when you factor in the price, is going to be very hard to beat. The only issue i have, is that my room is not big enough to take advantage of the speakers and that these require 4ohm stable amps.

Any dipole speaker, be they Magnepan, electrostatic, or whatever, take more care to set up to get a proper image and soundstage. Room treatment is almost required for the best sound, though they can sound great without anything extra. Properly set up, they provide pin-point imaging and a broad soundstage. Be prepared to tweak, and know the results are well worth it! - Don
