UHD starts running Stargate Atlantis and Northern Exposure in Jan!!!

Mentioned in another thread but such big news I thought I'd give it its own thread! Finally some good additions to UHD!

This is good news. I don't recall reading any reports that Northern Exposure was being re-telecined to HD, but they were likely doing this while creating the season box sets they have been releasing the past several years. I thought the picture quality of the several recent DVD season box sets for Northern Exposure was pretty good, so maybe that should have been a clue that they were going back to the film masters.

However, the music rights problems for DVDs have resulted in some awful substitutes as far as I could tell for some of the music or songs on the NX DVDs. So if UHD will be showing NX, will they use the original music or use they stuck onto the DVDs? Likely we will have to wait and see.

NX, of course, was framed for 4:3. Since they have cropped the other older shows such as Equalizer to 16:9, the odds are pretty good that they have done the same to NX. I will have to compare the DVD 4:3 shots to the UHD presentation to see how badly this hurts the show.

My biggest complaint for UniversalHD is that they have NO closed captions. AT ALL. I have attempted to email them about this via their web page, but I only got an automated email reply once and nothing more. My reading of the FCC requirements for CC is that UHD is required to send out CC for some X hours percent of the programming. And X > zero.

Before I follow up with a formal letter to Verizon, NBC and then to the FCC, I just want to confirm that no one out there gets closed captions for UHD? Anyone? I want to be sure that it is UHD not sending out caption data and not Verizon FiosTV dropping the caption data somehow.

I just checked the UniversalHD website and I only see listings for Stargate Atlantis, not Stargate SG-1.

Anyway, great news. Can't wait to see some Stargate in HD. SciFi channel needs to get it together and go HD already.

is SG any good? I've never watched it.

if BSG is a 9 and firefly is an 8, where do you put SG?

I meant just Stargate Atlantis.

As far as where does it place compared to BSG? Well, BSG is way ahead dramatically, and Stargate is a lot of fun, but is a very looong running show, SG1 being in its 10th season. Stargate Atlantis is a spinoff of SG1 (around its 8th season) and they are tightly woven together. So you can give it a shot, but you might want to watch some SG1 first.

The good thing is you can pick up SG1 pretty cheap on DVD now, some places selling all 9 seasons on DVD for not much more than $100. It's well worth that.

NX (and Janine Turner) in HD would be good, IF they keep the original soundtrack instead of the crap they've been pawning off in the box sets. The music was one of the reasons I loved this show so much.

I'm happy to see Stargate Atlantis, sad to see no Stargate Sg-1 though.
Stargate was one of those shows that I never bothered to watch before, too hokey etc. I borrowed a friends dvd set of SG-1 1st season and kind of caught the bug. It is hokey but Richard Dean Anderson is actually pretty hilarious, kinda made the show worthwhile.
Atlantis managed to make for an interesting twist.
I do think that starting off with Atlantis first (no SG-1) kind of hurts a bit though.

Now if they could just get Farscape! Truly cheesy and somehow pretty dramatic at the same time.

Stargate SG-1 has been my favorite TV Series for the last 10 years.
If I had to rate it I'd go with a 9.5, but I'm biased.
Hopefully they're working on getting the series in HD, it shouldn't be too much to ask since NBC Universal owns the Sci-fi channel

If you're interested, you should definitely pick up the season 1 box set.

All I know about Stargate SG-1 is that they are currently running S9 in HD in the UK. All the newer seasons of SG-1 as well as Atlantis are shot on HD video, so it's not so hard for them to do.

The older seasons of SG-1 are shot on film, and I'm not sure the producers are so eager to absorb the expense to convert them over to HD right now. Maybe as HD starts to really become more mainstream they'll decide to do this. As I said before, the DVDs are pretty good, and all are anamorphic and DD5.1 and priced well below most other sci-fi TV shows like Star Trek.

As far as the original music in Northern Exposure goes, it had all its original music intact when running on the Hallmark Channel a few months back, so it's quite possible it will be the same in this case.

IMHO the season one DVD set of SG-1 was a mediocre transfer--pretty grainy. It makes me think that they're not too keen on the idea of doing an HD transfer if they can't be bothered to put more effort into the DVD sets. Even Atlantis DVDs from Season one are a little sketchy at times, but I think that was due to their getting used to shooting in HD video.

Has UHD been the only network that's been converting classic series into HD and putting them on the air lately? Has HDnet done any? It seems like recently all we've gotten is press releases vaguely mentioning high definition (Seinfeld, Star Trek, etc.) yet we end up watching slightly improved SD versions while the HD versions sit in a vault somewhere.

OMG... this channel is now one of my favs..... those series will rule in HD. (along with the firefly and bsg episodes they have now)

The only negative (and this applies to bsg as well) is they dont show the new episodes on uhd. I hope they turn universal into scifi on fridays or something like that and start airing bsg/atlantis new episodes on a night and call it scifi night or something like that. Even if they arent the same to the day even getting both new episodes on within a week of the real air date would be good enough for me.

UHD is quickly becoming my favorite channel as well.

You misunderstood my comment. How's this: Stargate Atlantis is a spinoff that takes place around Stargate SG-1 S8?
How can they run SG Atlantis? I thought they only showed Universal properties. Stargate is MGM.

I didnt think both Stargates were MGM, I thought it was just SG-1?

*edit* nevermind, just looked it up, Atlantis is MGM as well.

SWEEETTTTT!!! Of course this also means another show that I don't watch on SCIFI until it comes out in HD! It's killing me not to watch BSG season 3 but it does start on UHD end of January!

Doesn't mean they can't sign a deal to show other studio's properties, which they apparantly did here.

I know it was "mentioned in another thread" but is there a link to any official announcement about "Northern Exposure"?

Quantum Leam had the same problem with their DVD sets in the US, which ended up screwing up the endings of one of the greatest episodes, M.I.A., by replacing Ray Charles' Georgia On My Mind with some generic elevator music.

However, on the UHD version of that episode, the music was intact.

I assume NE would be cropped to 16:9?

The schedule bot for Universal HD does indeed show a Northern Exposure marathon starting at 9 AM on January 1, 2007. See http://www.universalhd.com/Schedule/...ate=2007-01-01. Looks like they will blast through the entire first season of 8 episodes in one shot.

However, I think the only thing being updated on the Universal HD web site is the schedule. The home page has a blurb for the 2006 US Open tennis tournament! The FAQ page looks like it has not been updated since 2005. The FAQ does state that UHD does not provide captions: "Currently, our programming is not closed captioned. There are plans to implement closed captioning in the neat [sic] future". Yes, it actuallys say "neat" future. I will have to write them a nasty snail mail complaining about the lack of closed captions, followed by one to the FCC. I don't think their email page works.

Don't think so, but just look at the calander for Dec on UHD's website and flip over a day to Jan 1st and you'll see they start running a Northern Exposure S1 marathon.

Ah, someone beat me to it.

Usually music gets swapped because the license wording allows the copyright holder to demand additional royalties for release on physical media. If the music used in the A&E and Hallmark reruns of Northern Exposure were the same as the original broadcast, then I'd imagine UHD can use it as well. I never saw NE when it aired originally, so I wouldn't know.

Regardless, that's one new "series link" I've got to set up.

If UHD handles Stargate:Atlantis as well as The Movie Network in Canada(also a 1080i channel) does, you'll be in for a treat as SA on TMN looks spectacular, one of the best HD images I've seen.

Stargate:Atlantis runs 5-6 weeks behind the US in Canada.

UHD is starting Atlantis with S1. What happens after that is anyone's guess.

Great news re: "Northern Exposure" afiggatt and DaveFi. Thanks for the link.

I missed "Northern Exposure" when it originally ran. I'll DVR the first season and then see if I want to spring for the later seasons on DVD...or wait for their appearance on UHD.

Northern Exposure was about my favorite show back when it was running. Will be interested to see how these end up looking. If they decide to crop it will be a shame...
