Besides the size difference, what would you pick between the pioneer 5070 & the sony kdl2500? My room is not bright so reflections are not an issue & I only watch at night.
I will be gaming with a xbox 360 & watching hd tv via HD dvd & upconverted dvd via a marantz dv9600. Standard def is important too & from what I have read both do well enough in that regard.

Go for the plasma. Even with the lack of 1080p the pq is great and to me, the 5070 looks better than the Sony LCD anyday and im a huge supporter of Sony.

Check out this thread for great pics of the 5070 with blu-ray.

I'd go with the Pioneer, too. I originally had the Sony but was hit with one of the infamous "cloudy panels." After trying to find one that didn't have the issue and being given the run around by Sony, I switched to the Pio. I was initially hesitant due to fears of burn-in/IR while playing games, but that was quickly put to rest by several people on this forum. If you take care of your tv and use common sense, you shouldn't have any problems. Your mileage may vary, but I've had mine for a week now and have played plenty of Resistance with no issue.

Personally I am going with the Sony. I need 1080p and I like the lower power consumption of the Sony. BTW, I am running a Panasonic plasma right now and the PQ is excellent.

If you are looking for PQ alone then I would go with the Pioneer.

I'd be tempted to get the Sony.

I own a Pioneer PRO-1130HD and it certainly looks fantastic. However, I have a lot of image retention issues when gaming (no permanent burn-in, though).

Also, 1080p resolution on the Sony is another big plus for gaming use.

So, if you plan on gaming a decent amount, I would take the Sony. Otherwise, I'd get the Pioneer.

IMHO the only reason to choose LCD over plasma as a technology is light reflection and in your case that is not a problem.

Likewise, the only reason to choose 1080p over 768p native resolution is viewing distance. If you plan to view the display at closer than 8', then 1080p is a necessity otherwise you will be hard pressed to see a difference because your eyes will not be able to resolve the additional resolution and SDE should not be apparent. Your eye's distances may be a little different but not by much.

So unless you cannot control light reflection or need to sit very close, get the plasma. The picture is fundamentally better. Again just my opinion. Let your eyes be the judge but do it in an environment similar to your home not a bright store.

BTW The Pioneer 5070 is a good display. The Pioneer Elite is much better but a good deal more expensive. The Pioneer 507cmx, their comercial display, with a KeyDigital card for processing and connections is as good or better than the Elite and now actually costs a bit less than the 5070. Nobody should buy the 5070 let alone an Elite until they have considered the 507cmx alternative. It looks good too in a simple dark matte finish unless you are so sold on the shinny black of the consumer line.

Contact Chris at Cleveland plasma for details. That is where I found out about the cmx series.

Cheers,

Gary

I am in the same boat, was looking for a panel for gaming on my xbox360, dvd movies, and eventually HD-DVD/BR movies. I ended up going with the Pio5071 at BB last night. IMO the pioneer brings a lot to the plate with color/blacks, and looks great even when off. Just need to baby it a little early on, and all should be well.

I'm in the same boat too. Originally I was concerned about CD on 1080p LCDs which I saw on the Bravia and it looked gahstly. After much research and viewing I came upon Pioneer 5070 which is just beautiful. I just came back from BB and noticed that the Sharp next to the Pio had this very clear resolution with no jagged edges on lettering or animations. The TVs were being fed HD (1080i I think). The 1080p issue bothers me, since I wouldn't want to have to upgrade my TV in less than 5 years for blue ray. Also, I would like to have the option to use it for a PC display down the line with a media center PC.

Also, as far as black level comparision, couldn't one just turn down the brightness and contrast to get better blacks on LCD( excuse my ignoirance, I just had to ask)

Also, I watch alot of XVids. Does anyone have any comparison for xvids on diffrerent TVs

Thanks in Advance.

vent vent vent , blah blah blah ... too many formats and topologies.....

No. You'll just get more dark grey, shadow details will get "crushed" into dark grey patches.
